Background

Master of Prospero

Magnus is the Emperor's fifteenth son and the ruler of Prospero. The planet's early settlers included psykers rejected by wider human society, making it a center for the study of Psykic Power and the Warp. Magnus's immense innate power and knowledge allowed him to seize control of Prospero within a few years, defeat the Soul-Eater Monsters, and become its supreme sorcerer. 78

Even before rejoining the Imperium, Magnus understood his origins through psychic prophecy and could communicate with the Emperor across interstellar distances. The Emperor personally tutored him through Psykic communication, and Magnus maintained unusually close contact with his father. 60 78

His precognition showed him that Axis would bring him great benefit and help him avoid disasters. This prophecy led Magnus to enthusiastically receive Leman Russ, Axis, and Kaisa when they arrived on Prospero. 78

Thousand Sons Gene-seed Crisis

Magnus's Legion suffered severe instability during Astartes implantation and flesh mutations linked to its Gene-seed. He sought Russ and Axis's help because he believed Axis's Ki might improve implantation survival and halt the mutations affecting his gene-sons. 79 80

Axis eventually purified and evolved the Thousand Sons' Gene-seed into a perfect form. Although mild symptoms could still occur later, Ki energy from Axis's special Saibaman gene-son could stop mutations before they progressed. 164

Magnus also contributed his blood, Gene-seed, and Psykic Power to the cultivation of a red-skinned Saibaman. He accepted the resulting being as his genetic offspring and a member of the Thousand Sons. 83

The Librarius Project

Magnus advocated creating Librarius formations across the Space Marine Legions, believing psykers should be properly trained rather than rejected. Russ initially resisted the proposal because of his fear of Warp influence, but later accepted Magnus's plan for a Space Wolves Librarius. 84 88

Magnus trained Kaisa in Prospero's psychic disciplines and spells while Axis was occupied with Gene-seed work. He later personally selected and trained more than twenty gifted Librarians for Axis's Legion, giving them his strongest and most stable candidates. 89 164

Chaos and the Great Heresy

A blue, feathered, bird-headed Warp entity—identified as Tzeentch—attempted to tempt Magnus by promising to solve his Gene-seed problems in exchange for one of his eyes. Magnus refused the offer and reported the entity's approach through Kaisa, allowing the Emperor to intervene against the threat. 86 87 148

When Axis became trapped in the Warp, Magnus developed new spells and exhausted himself alongside the Thousand Sons to tear open a passage for Axis's return. His efforts brought Axis back to Prospero after nearly a century had passed in realspace. 210 211

Magnus later used precognition to discover that Lion El'Jonson and the Adeptus Custodes would destroy Prospero if he and Axis departed for Terra. This warning allowed them to alter their plans and avoid the predicted destruction of the planet and Legion. 218

The Golden Throne and Webway War

Magnus answered the Emperor's call during the Webway crisis and sat upon the Golden Throne to help repair the damaged Webway. The device immensely amplified his Psykic Power but subjected him to nearly unbearable physical and spiritual torment. 226 227

Guided by the Emperor, Magnus learned to weave Psykic Power into barriers and use transformed Chaos energy to mend breaches in the Webway. He continued maintaining the barrier, aiding the Astronomican, and defending Terra even while under severe strain. 227 228 256

He also helped awaken Kaisa by using the Golden Throne's amplified power to precisely repair her soul. 229 230

Ascension

Magnus devised the Ascension Plan: using Tree of Might Fruits to evolve into a Warp god capable of existing in both the Warp and material universe. The Emperor accepted the plan as a contingency against the Dark King and the Chaos Gods. 256

After consuming eight Tree of Might Fruits, Magnus awakened a new body and a purified form of Warp energy he named Arcane Energy. He became a Warp deity whose presence naturally calms nearby Warp tides rather than corrupting them. 306 307

Appearance

Magnus first appears as a slender, wise-looking young man approximately 3.5 meters tall, carrying a staff in Tizca. He later wears distinctive crimson armor and is described during the Webway crisis as having a single eye. 78 211 227

Following his Ascension, he becomes nearly four meters tall, with violet skin, silver-blue energy veins, a third eye in his forehead, and a rotating star-chart domain filled with psychic runes behind him. 306 307

  • Carries a Psykic Staff, later able to reshape it into a colossal weapon through Warp Incarnation. 196 197
  • His ascended third eye reflects stars, runes, and fragments of knowledge. 306
  • Warp energy becomes calm and responsive in his immediate vicinity after his apotheosis. 306 307

Personality

Magnus is intensely curious, proud of his intellect, and driven by the pursuit of knowledge. He eagerly studies unfamiliar spells, can memorize entire tomes after a rapid reading, and openly claims that any psychic spell can be learned and improved once he has examined it. 194

He is warm and enthusiastic toward brothers and allies, particularly those whom he believes will help Prospero and the Thousand Sons. His reception of Russ and Axis is notably affectionate, and he develops a close friendship with Axis after the latter helps stabilize his Legion. 78 164

Despite his confidence, Magnus is protective of those he values. He warns Axis about the dangers of the Warp, devotes immense resources to rescuing him from the Warp, and accepts the Golden Throne's pain to protect the Imperium. 82 210 227

Abilities & Skills

Psykic Power and Precognition

Magnus is considered the most powerful human psyker beneath the Emperor and the strongest psyker among the Primarchs. His Psykic Power is sufficient to communicate across vast distances, perceive hidden conversations, guide ships through the Warp, and foresee possible futures. 17 60 78 220

  • Foresees threats to Prospero and the future destruction of his Legion. 218
  • Can hear conversations across Prospero when he chooses, including psychic exchanges. 78 87

  • His Psykic Power is inhibited by the presence of Sisters of Silence and anti-psychic barriers. 220

Sorcery and Spellcraft

Magnus possesses extraordinary aptitude for psychic spells. He rapidly learns unfamiliar techniques, improves existing spells, and has surpassed his original mentor in Prospero's psychic arts. 194

  • Uses transformation magic to assume Sanguinius's appearance, including wings. 194
  • Casts curses that weaken, slow, confuse, age, blind, frighten, or increase gravity upon opponents. 196
  • Knows spells for genetic alteration, disguise, gravity manipulation, daemon resistance, and advanced Warp protection. 194
  • Withheld Warp Exile and spatial-temporal interference during his spar with Axis because they were lethal techniques. 196

Warp Incarnation

Magnus can transform himself into a gigantic body of pure Psykic Power known as Warp Incarnation. 197

  • Expands to several thousand meters in height. 197
  • Forms a colossal staff-sword capable of splitting continents. 197
  • Can unleash destructive force on a planetary scale; his clash with Axis ultimately destroys the planet beneath them. 197
  • His direct physical strength remains inferior to Axis's, making psychic techniques and spellcraft his preferred means of combat. 196

Golden Throne Operation

Magnus is one of the few beings capable of operating the Golden Throne alongside the Emperor. 230

  • Receives Psykic amplification of dozens of times while seated upon the Throne. 227
  • Helps repair Webway breaches by weaving Psykic Power into barriers and seals. 227
  • Can transform Chaos energy into material used for Webway repair while amplified. 227
  • Suffers extreme pain and exhaustion from the Throne's simultaneous assault on his body and soul. 227 228

Arcane Energy

After Ascension, Magnus gains mastery over Arcane Energy, purified Warp energy without the usual corruptive impurities. 307

  • Can generate and manipulate Arcane Energy without chanting or creating a psychic storm. 307
  • Plans spell systems based on elemental control, energy manipulation, and converted Psykic techniques. 307
  • Can calm Warp storms in a localized area and navigate Warp travel without the Astronomican. 307
  • His Gene-seed descendants become powerful psykers able to purify Warp energy and cast arcane spells independently. 307
