Background / History
World War II origins
Red Skull established Hydra during World War II, drawing on older ideological traditions. Originally attached to the Nazis, the organization became his independent instrument of conquest after he discovered the Tesseract. Arnim Zola used its energy to develop weapons and arm Hydra’s forces 10 20 345 349.
The Allies created the Strategic Scientific Reserve to oppose Hydra. Captain America and the Howling Commandos defeated its wartime forces, while Red Skull disappeared into the Tesseract’s light. Hydra subsequently splintered and vanished from public view 10 20.
Infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Rather than disappearing, Hydra embedded itself within S.H.I.E.L.D., the successor to the Strategic Scientific Reserve. It used the agency’s authority and resources to spread panic, profit from turmoil, and prepare its return 10 21.
Alexander Pierce concealed his allegiance behind his position as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Secretary and liaison to the World Security Council. Hydra’s network also reached the Council, the U.S. Congress, and other government institutions. When William examined its membership list, the narration described eighty percent of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Hydra agents 44.
Red Skull’s later return was kept secret even within Hydra. Zola created a biochemical clone from preserved DNA and transferred the original Red Skull’s consciousness into it. Only a small circle—including Pierce, Gideon Malick, and von Strucker—knew that he was directing the organization from the shadows 564.
The Ghost File
Hydra backed the Skull Gang for intelligence gathering and illicit trade. When the gang’s rapid growth attracted Nick Fury’s attention, Hydra treated it as a disposable liability and sought to erase the evidence connecting them 21 186.
The cleanup failed to recover the Ghost File, a USB drive containing the names of important Hydra members. William stole Pierce’s fingerprint and used it to unlock the file. He withheld the list from Fury because exposing Hydra immediately could radically alter events and destroy his foreknowledge advantage 44.
The missing file left Hydra searching for its thief and fearing exposure. William’s possession of the list later became decisive during Project Insight 110 325.
Arms buildup and the Battle of New York
Hydra initially tried to acquire Iron Man technology through political pressure and obtain Abomination’s corpse for its unstable Super Soldier Serum and Hulk blood. Both attempts failed 110.
During the Battle of New York, Pierce and Malick supported a nuclear strike intended to destroy both the Chitauri invasion and the Avengers. Iron Man intercepted the missile and carried it through the wormhole 167 325 564.
After the Avengers survived, Hydra regarded them as the principal obstacle to its return. It stole part of Iron Man’s technology and recruited Justin Hammer, whose factory became a secret production facility for Dreadnought Robots 174 176.
Project Insight and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s fall
Hydra accelerated its confrontation with S.H.I.E.L.D. during the Dark Elves’ attack, recognizing that Malekith’s victory would leave no place for its own ambitions 270.
Its agents subsequently hunted William through police, SWAT, military, and intelligence personnel. The pursuit revealed that the Skull Gang, Deadlock Gang, and Viper Gang all served Hydra, with some supposedly eliminated gangs having joined it in secret 302.
Project Insight combined a predictive targeting algorithm, Insight Satellites, and three upgraded Helicarriers to eliminate people deemed threats to Hydra. Its intended targets included President Ellis, Stephen Strange, and members of the Avengers 319 325.
William countered the project with a custom program prepared by Skye. Using selected names from the Ghost File, he redirected the weapons against Hydra’s own leadership. Whitehall, Bakshi, Malick, and numerous other senior members were struck, after which the Helicarriers destroyed one another. Pierce was confronted separately and killed 325 326.
The losses did not end Hydra’s operations. John Garrett, exposed as the Clairvoyant, seized the S.H.I.E.L.D. Hub, prompting Blackwatch to intervene 328.
The Hydra Empire
Hydra’s next offensive centered on a biochemical clone of Captain America. Created from Steve Rogers’s DNA, the clone reproduced his enhanced physical attributes and leadership ability. He infiltrated the Avengers while the real Steve was imprisoned on Confinement Island 348 349 354 564.
The clone stole the Tesseract, allowing Zola to equip Hydra’s soldiers, robots, Mechanical Octopuses, and six Helicarriers with its energy. Red Skull, disguised as Secretary of State Dale, also turned General Ross into Red Hulk and arranged Hulk’s exile to the Moon 349 354 564.
Hydra occupied the White House and attempted to seize control of American politics. The Avengers’ apparent disbandment had lowered its guard: William’s team rescued the real Captain America while the others prepared their counterattack 354 355 356.
Thor and Hulk destroyed the invading Helicarriers. William ultimately defeated the Captain America Clone and his Infinity Armor using Genji’s Dragonblade, Nano Boost, and the Tesseract’s energy. Red Skull nevertheless remained hidden, while Zola continued developing weapons 356 359.
Continued campaigns and the Avengers’ civil war
Hydra maintained a fortified Sokovian base holding the Mind Scepter. The Avengers attacked its soldiers, copied Iron Man armor, and Mechanical Octopuses; Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch formed another line of defense 420 421.
Carson and Madame Viper later led an assault on Cross Tower to obtain Yellowjacket technology. The operation met resistance from the building’s security, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and William, while Ant-Man’s forces destroyed the armor’s data and power source 505 506.
Red Skull eventually revealed himself as the mastermind behind S.H.I.E.L.D.’s fall, the Hydra Empire, and the divisions driving the Avengers’ civil war. He declared that world conquest was no longer his ultimate goal: he wanted every Infinity Stone and the power to become an eternal god 564.
The civil-war crisis ended with Hydra’s defeat and reconciliation between Iron Man and Captain America. Red Skull continued planning around Hive 568 569.
Hive and the Inhuman campaign
Red Skull’s team captured Hive from the distant planet where he had been exiled. Although Malick had worshipped Hive as Hydra’s god, Red Skull regarded him as a tool rather than the organization’s true deity 44 518 638.
Hive returned with Red Skull, Red Hulk, Viper, and Zola, seized control of Maximus, and proclaimed himself king of the Inhumans. Red Skull then prepared an interstellar missile intended to blanket Earth in Terrigen Mist; Hive’s control over Inhumans would allow him to establish a global Hydra Empire 625 628 634.
After Hive’s defeat, Red Hulk, Zola, and Viper were imprisoned in the Raft. The Red Skull encountered on the Moon proved to be a robot, leaving the real leader uncaptured and Hydra with dwindling resources 638.
The Raft raid and dimensional experiments
Hydra infiltrated the Raft and attacked it with soldiers and Mechanical Octopuses. A dying operative detonated the central control center, unlocking every cell and disabling Ross’s gamma-suppression system 673 674.
The organization then operated a particle collider beneath Queens to search for the lost Sky Hammer. Its activation opened a transdimensional rift that threatened catastrophic damage to space-time; Spider-Man was knocked into it during a fight with Red Hulk 682 687.
Hydra moved the collider from Queens to Confinement Island and used it to summon enemies from other dimensions. Vulture allied with Red Skull and Zola, while the Spider-Men assaulted Hydra’s forces and its remaining Infinity Helicarrier 691 694 702 704 705.
The Serpent campaign
Guided by the Sky Hammer, Red Onslaught took a Hydra warship to the Mariana Trench. He broke an ancient seal and freed the imprisoned god who granted his wish to engulf the world in fear 709.
Hydra invaded Washington under Red Onslaught while the Serpent’s Worthy spread destruction. William later defeated Red Onslaught, returning him to Red Skull’s original form. When the World Serpent reclaimed the Worthy’s hammers, Red Skull, Red Hulk, and Viper regained their senses alongside the other affected characters 714 737 738.
During the later Infinity Stone retrieval operation, Hydra agents posing as S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel again handled the Mind Scepter 844.
