|---|---|---|
| Mark I | 22, 34 | Secretly built from scrap in Ten Rings captivity; enabled Tony's escape from Afghanistan before losing power and falling apart. |
| Mark II / Mark III | 31 | Built and tested after his return; Tony uses the Mark III in Afghanistan to stop an illegal arms deal and protect civilians. |

| Mark 85 | 845 | Tony's upgraded armor during the operation to retrieve the Tesseract from an alternate timeline. |
Background and History
Captivity and the Birth of Iron Man
Tony was Stark Industries' wealthy, arrogant CEO when the Ten Rings ambushed his convoy in Afghanistan. A Stark Industries missile wounded him, leaving shrapnel moving toward his heart; a doctor preserved his life with an electromagnet powered by a car battery. The Ten Rings demanded that Tony build a Jericho Missile, but he instead created the Mark I armor and escaped. 22
After being missing for three months, Tony returned to the United States and publicly shut down Stark Industries' weapons-manufacturing division. Having witnessed civilians killed by his company's weapons, he rejected the role the company had played in their deaths. 23
Obadiah Stane—Tony's father's former partner and Tony's mentor after Howard Stark's death—had arranged the kidnapping and continued illegal arms sales. Stane stole the Mark I, built the Iron Monger armor, and removed Tony's Arc Reactor, nearly killing him. Tony survived with his original reactor and fought to stop Stane. 33 34
Tony publicly declared, “I am Iron Man,” refusing to conceal his armored identity despite the danger that exposure created. 40
Palladium Crisis and the Avengers
The palladium-powered Arc Reactor that kept Tony alive began poisoning him. As his condition worsened, he became reckless and treated his birthday as though it could be his last. 89 With William's help, Tony decoded Howard Stark's Expo model, synthesized a new element, and replaced the palladium core, saving his life and increasing the reactor's output. 94
During the Battle of New York, Tony carried a tactical nuclear missile through the alien wormhole to save the city despite knowing it could be a one-way trip. The experience transformed his understanding of heroism and sacrifice. 167
The battle also left him with severe anxiety centered on William's White Wolf Spirit and dogs resembling it. He suffered insomnia, nightmares, panic attacks, and exhaustion while compulsively developing more armor. 187 190 195
Armor Wars, Ultron, and Civil War
After the Mandarin's threats and the destruction of his Malibu villa, Tony escalated his preparations, building the Iron Legion and deploying numerous remote-controlled suits against Aldrich Killian's Extremis forces. 199 216 217
Driven by fear for Earth's safety and his own mortality, Tony proposed Ultron as an artificial-intelligence planetary defense system despite William's warning. Ultron gained sentience, seized control of the Iron Legion, and attacked the Avengers. 406 431 Tony later fought beside William to defeat Ultron. 435
During the conflict over the Sokovia Accords, Tony opposed Captain America and created specialized countermeasures, including the Anti-@@REF_ENTITY_12382125@@ Armor. He and Steve eventually reconciled after joining the Avengers against a common threat. 548 554 568
Later Wars
Tony fought alongside the Avengers through the Omnic Crisis, using Stark satellites and the Iron Legion against Nulltroopers and Ultron's forces. 465 476 479 In preparation for Thanos' invasion, he and Bruce Banner tested a new Arc Reactor and deployed the Earth Net: hundreds of Iron Armors forming Earth's second defensive line. 774 778
He later developed E.D.I.T.H., smart sunglasses connected to Stark defense satellites, drones, the Iron Legion, surveillance systems, and communications networks. 870 During the Final Invasion, Tony remained among the Avengers defending Earth and ultimately boarded the Watcher Shuttlecraft for a new mission in the Overwatch world. 870 880
Appearance
Tony is described as handsome and is frequently seen in tailored suits when outside his armor. 147 His survival and later armor systems depend on the Arc Reactor embedded in his chest.
- Typically wears red-and-gold Iron Man armor.
- His Mark VI reactor has a triangular energy source. 98
- Uses black E.D.I.T.H. smart sunglasses during the later Thanos conflict. 870
Personality
Tony is openly narcissistic, theatrical, and intensely competitive. He enjoys public attention, grand entrances, and the celebrity status that comes with being Iron Man; he also habitually needles friends and opponents with jokes during dangerous situations. 76 215
His captivity fundamentally changes his priorities. He grows from a weapons-industry playboy into someone willing to dismantle his company's weapons division, protect civilians, and risk his own life for the world. 23 167
Tony's confidence often conceals insecurity. After New York, his fear and anxiety manifest as sleeplessness, obsessive armor-building, and panic attacks, especially when confronted with images of White Wolf or dogs. 187 190 By the time he has a daughter, Morgan, he is notably more mature and steady, showing open paternal affection. 842
Abilities & Skills
Super-Genius Engineering
Tony designs advanced energy systems, weapons, artificial intelligence, armor, and global-defense infrastructure.
- Created the Mark I from scrap while imprisoned by the Ten Rings. 22 34
- Synthesized a new element by decoding Howard Stark's Expo model with William. 94
- Developed increasingly specialized armor systems, including Hulkbuster, Anti-@@REF_ENTITY_12382125@@ Armor, Nano Armor, and the Earth Net. 436 554 774 782
- Uses holographic reconstruction and analysis to investigate the Mandarin-related explosions. 197

Armored Combat
Tony's Iron Man armors grant him flight, enhanced durability, energy projection, and a versatile weapons platform.
- Repulsor cannons and chest-mounted Unibeam provide his standard ranged offense. 85 98
- Armor systems include missiles, lasers, energy shields, remote deployment, and specialized weapons. 98 216 782
- The Nano Armor can form shields, magnetic adhesion devices, spaceflight thrusters, stabilizing wings, repair tools, and medical-treatment systems. 782
- His armor can be vulnerable to power depletion, electromagnetic attacks, and enemy hacking; Sombra's EMP has repeatedly disabled his suits. 202 483 563
