Power Progression

Background and History

Thor is Odin’s son and Asgard’s intended heir. Before his banishment, he travels with Asgardian warriors to Jotunheim and is publicly celebrated in Asgard 5 106 107. Stripped of his divine power and sent to Earth, he meets Jane Foster in New Mexico. He fights his way into a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility to reclaim Mjolnir, but Odin’s restriction prevents him from lifting it 115 117 118.

Thor later joins the Avengers. He seeks to take Loki back to Asgard during the Tesseract crisis, initially clashing with Iron Man before fighting alongside him in New York 147 148 162. During the Dark World crisis, he helps defend the Nine Realms against Malekith. Afterward, he stays on Earth with the Avengers and places a Mjolnir-powered barrier around the Tesseract 261 278 282 284.

The God of Fear, Serpent, destroys Mjolnir. On Sakaar, Thor briefly discovers he can command lightning without it; his power later fully awakens during the battle for Asgard 715 723 736. After Asgard’s destruction, Eitri forges him Stormbreaker. Thor uses it against Thanos’s forces, though the Black Order escapes with the Reality Stone 749 750 751.

Appearance

Thor initially has flowing blond hair and wears an eagle-feathered helmet, armor, and a red cape 106.

• His hair is cut short before he fights in the Grandmaster’s arena; two red stripes mark his face there 721.
• After his power fully awakens, he is described as one-eyed, with blue light shining from his eye during combat 736.
• A future Thor encountered during a time-travel mission has gained considerable weight, in contrast to his younger counterpart 861 862.

Personality

Thor is proud of his strength, his status, and especially his blond hair. An insult to his hair helps provoke his fight with Iron Man; losing several locks to Tony’s lasers makes him furious 148. He can be boastful, once declaring himself the strongest Avenger before an enemy catches him unaware 481.

He is also loyal to his companions. He tries to reason with Hulk even while they fight on Sakaar, remains concerned about Loki despite his betrayals, and commits to protecting the dwarves after Asgard falls 722 727 751.

Thunder and lightning

Thor summons and directs lightning in combat 148 269.

• Wrath of Thunder gathers lightning for a powerful strike; after his first awakening, he can use it without Mjolnir 269 723.
• Once fully awakened, his punches, kicks, and other attacks carry lightning 736.
• His lightning can recharge compatible equipment, including Iron Man’s armor and William’s Tesla Cannon—sometimes to Thor’s disadvantage against Tony 162 342 554.

• Thor has strength, endurance, and durability beyond mortal limits, including resistance to explosions and extreme temperatures 106.
• Even while stripped of divine power, he defeats multiple guards in hand-to-hand combat 117.
• His divine soul withstands Ghost Rider’s Penance Stare without substantial injury, although the attack temporarily incapacitates him 290.

Odinforce

• Thor first draws on his power without Mjolnir in the Sakaar arena but struggles to call on it again afterward 723 732.
