Background / History

Bruce Banner became the Hulk after surviving a gamma-radiation accident that should have killed him. Anger triggers the transformation, creating a powerful and destructive alter ego that Banner initially treats as an illness to be cured. General Thaddeus Ross subsequently pursues Banner across the world, seeking both to imprison the Hulk and to reproduce his power for military use 45 47.

During the Brazil and New York incidents, Hulk devastates Ross's Hulkbuster Team and military forces before fighting the Abomination. Initially outmatched, he receives William's one-use Nano Boost, overwhelms Abomination, and leaves after the monster is killed; the public begins to recognize him as a hero rather than solely a threat 51 65 69.

After suppressing transformations for over a year in India, Banner reluctantly joins S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers. Hulk later fights in the Battle of New York, where Banner reveals that he can transform intentionally 142 158. His lack of consistent control remains dangerous, however: pain, fear, and Scarlet Witch's magic repeatedly drive him into destructive rampages 153 435.

Personality
