Background / History

Tang San studied at Nuoding City Spirit Master Academy alongside Xiao Wu. He possessed Innate Full Soul Power, Twin Martial Souls, and a confidence in his own talent that often manifested as condescension toward others, particularly Lin Ye 29 110.

He worked part-time at the Nuoding City Blacksmith Shop, where he developed his forging ability and obtained materials for hidden weapons 12. His teacher, Yu Xiaogang, later revealed that Tang San is the son of Tang Hao, the Clear Sky Douluo 165.

Tang San trusted Yu Xiaogang deeply from an early age, regarding him as an exceptionally knowledgeable mentor because Yu Xiaogang had recognized his Twin Martial Souls 6. Yu Xiaogang in turn regarded Tang San as the proof through which he would validate his theories to the Soul Master world 113 117.

Appearance

No physical description is provided beyond Tang San being a young male student and soul master.

Personality

Tang San is intensely possessive of Xiao Wu and views Lin Ye as a rival for her attention. After encountering Xiao Wu and Lin Ye at Shrek Academy, he resolved to “snatch Xiao Wu back” from Lin Ye 29.

He is proud of his Innate Full Soul Power, Twin Martial Souls, hidden-weapon knowledge, and forging skill. Lin Ye’s superior weaponcraft and rapid advancement repeatedly provoke Tang San’s envy, resentment, and suspicion 75 76 82.

His determination to surpass Lin Ye leads him to steal blueprints from the Forging Room, attempt to reproduce Lin Ye’s weapons, and consider using Oscar and Ma Hongjun in retaliation 86 91. He nevertheless displays persistence in cultivation and crafting even after repeated failures 81 86.

Tang San is capable of vicious calculation when he believes he can act without consequence. He considers using fast- and slow-acting poisons against Lin Ye and is proficient in techniques intended to torment an opponent over time 74. During his challenge against Lin Ye, he used deadly poison despite being unaware of Lin Ye’s actual cultivation 165.

Following Lin Ye’s defeat of him, Tang San’s psychological condition becomes extremely unstable. Even after temporarily recovering his sanity, the revelation that Xiao Wu had reached level 65 overwhelms him and causes another regression into a childlike, confused state 198 199 200.

Abilities & Skills

Twin Martial Souls

Tang San possesses Twin Martial Souls: Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer 29 165.

  • Blue Silver Grass — summoned during Shrek Academy’s entrance trial alongside two soul rings 29.
  • Blue Silver Entanglement — uses Blue Silver Grass to obstruct and bind opponents; Tang San used it against Xiao Wu during their fight at Nuoding Academy 15.
  • Parasite — his second documented Blue Silver Grass soul skill, which he intended to use to restrict Xiao Wu and create an opening for a counterattack 15.
  • Clear Sky Hammer — identified by Yu Xiaogang as Tang San’s second Martial Soul and evidence of his Clear Sky Sect lineage 165.
  • His Twin Martial Souls and Innate Full Soul Power contribute to his belief that he is superior to other students 29.

Purple Demon Eye

Tang San uses the Purple Demon Eye for perception and observation.

  • He attempted to identify a distant golden light in the Soul Hunting Forest, but could not see through it 7.
  • It was unable to track Xiao Wu after she used Teleportation during their fight 15.
  • Although it could follow Xiao Wu’s movements before she teleported, his body and thoughts could not react quickly enough to capitalize on what he saw 15.
  • Its limitations are attributed to his insufficient cultivation of the technique 14.

Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track

Tang San possesses the Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, an evasive footwork technique.

  • He used it to evade Xiao Wu’s attack during their initial Dorm Seven confrontation 2.
  • Xiao Wu disabled his knees during their later fight specifically to prevent him from using the technique to evade her 15.
  • The technique was ineffective against Zhao Wuji’s overwhelming pressure during Shrek Academy’s fourth entrance trial 29.

Hidden Weapons and Forging

Tang San is an experienced forger capable of crafting hidden weapons from blueprints.

  • Worked at the Nuoding City Blacksmith Shop and used it to improve his forging ability 12.
  • His hammer rhythm is recognized as a sophisticated forging technique 74.
  • Can pick locks and covertly enter the Forging Room to obtain weapon blueprints 86.
  • Is capable of constructing hidden weapons from plans, but is portrayed as unable to identify or correct flaws in Lin Ye’s deliberately inaccurate “improved” designs 85.
  • His efforts to surpass Lin Ye’s hidden weapons lead him to copy designs rather than independently develop superior mechanisms 87 89.

Poison and Hidden-Weapon Techniques

Tang San possesses poison and Tang Sect hidden-weapon techniques.

  • Lin Ye considers these advantages sufficient to give Tang San an edge over Xiao Wu when their soul power is close 12.
  • He refrained from using them during his early fight with Xiao Wu 15.
  • He is knowledgeable in both fast-acting poisons and slow-acting poisons meant to inflict prolonged suffering 74.
  • He later used deadly poison during his match with Lin Ye, despite not knowing Lin Ye’s true cultivation 165.

Snake Skin Bind

Tang San’s third documented soul skill came from a 1,300-year Sly Snake soul ring 105.

  • Produces a stench-based binding effect.
  • Tang San is disappointed by the skill’s nature and effect 105.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Godly Zhuge Crossbow — self-crafted crossbow based on stolen and inaccurate blueprints; malfunctioned, locked onto Tang San, and exploded during a public demonstration 89.
  • Hidden-weapon blueprints — repeatedly sought and stolen from Lin Ye’s Forging Room 86 87.
  • Twenty-Four Bridge Moonlit Night — storage item from which Tang San produced wire for lockpicking while infiltrating the Forging Room 86.
  • Forging hammer and table — used to refine iron and craft hidden weapons 73.

Relationships

  • Xiao Wu — former classmate and the focus of Tang San’s possessive affection; she rejects his attempts to join her and Lin Ye, defeats him in a fight, and later still shows concern when he is injured 11 15 89. Tang San briefly confronts her again after recovering his sanity, but her revelation that she is level 65 and her subsequent slap trigger his renewed mental regression 198 199 200.
  • Lin Ye — primary rival. Tang San envies Lin Ye’s closeness with Xiao Wu, weaponcraft, Soul Tool knowledge, and cultivation; their conflict culminates in Tang San’s severe defeat and mental collapse 29 76 112.
  • Yu Xiaogang — teacher and mentor. Tang San relies on him after becoming mentally impaired, while Yu Xiaogang seeks treatment and uses Tang San’s lineage to pressure Shrek Academy 113 165. Yu Xiaogang is ultimately compelled to remain Tang San’s primary caretaker because of Tang Hao’s status and Tang San’s deteriorated condition 209 241.
  • Tang Hao — father, the Clear Sky Douluo. Tang San initially fails to recognize him in his impaired state and attacks him upon his arrival at Shrek Academy 165 173. Tang Hao’s intimidation of Shrek’s staff directly results in Zhao Wuji retaliating against Tang San 177 179.
  • Flender — Shrek Academy dean. His trust in Tang San deteriorates after witnessing Tang San steal blueprints; he later punishes Tang San with a major demerit and probation 87 91. Despite his dislike of Tang San, Flender continues to accommodate him out of concern over Tang Hao’s possible retaliation 225.
  • Zhao Wuji — Shrek Academy teacher and examiner. He severely injures Tang San during the entrance trial, later guides his soul-ring hunt, and eventually beats him after Tang Hao threatens the academy 29 94 179.
  • Oscar and Ma Hongjun — fellow Shrek students who cooperate with Tang San in efforts to counter Lin Ye’s influence 94.
  • Liu Erlong — supports having Tang San remain under Yu Xiaogang’s supervision so that Yu Xiaogang is responsible for his special care 241.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Nuoding Academy Rivalry

Tang San returns to Nuoding Academy after obtaining his first soul ring and becomes increasingly disturbed by Lin Ye and Xiao Wu’s closeness. His attempt to insert himself into their group is rejected by Xiao Wu 7 11.

He mistakes Xiao Wu’s invitation to the playground for a confession, only to be challenged to a fight. Using Teleportation, Charm, and Lin Ye’s tactical guidance, Xiao Wu dislocates Tang San’s limbs and knocks him unconscious 15. The loss leaves him reclusive and devastated 16.

Arrival at Shrek Academy

Tang San is delighted to find Xiao Wu at Shrek but resents Lin Ye’s presence. During Zhao Wuji’s fourth entrance trial, he is nearly incapacitated by a single enhanced palm strike 29.

At Shrek, he continues trying to forge hidden weapons and reacts with hostility when he discovers that Lin Ye has a dedicated Forging Room and superior forging skill 73 74.

Blueprint Theft and Public Humiliation

Threatened by Lin Ye’s mass-produced hidden weapons and Soul Tools, Tang San secretly enters the Forging Room to steal blueprints. His first Zhuge Crossbow explodes because of flaws in the plans; he later steals the corrected version and continues crafting 82 86.

At the hidden-weapon exhibition, Tang San publicly displays his Godly Zhuge Crossbow. It malfunctions, fires on him, and explodes. Lin Ye reveals that Tang San was deliberately given inaccurate blueprints 89.

Tang San is subsequently caught stealing and framing others. Flender gives him a major demerit and academic probation 91.

Soul-Ring Hunt

Tang San reaches level 30 and joins Zhao Wuji’s group for a soul-ring hunt. He loses the opportunity to obtain the Man Faced Demon Spider soul ring, the Eight Spider Lances, and Spider Web Bind; instead, he absorbs a 1,300-year Sly Snake ring and gains Snake Skin Bind 94 105.

Challenge Against Lin Ye and Mental Collapse

Confident that Lin Ye has only modest soul power, Tang San challenges him in an attempt to force him out of Shrek Academy and claim Xiao Wu for himself 108 109. Lin Ye reveals himself as a seven-ring Soul Saint, later confirmed at level 76, and brutally defeats Tang San with a poisoned needle 109 112.

Tang San awakens with severe pain, amnesia, and childlike behavior. His condition worsens over time, requiring treatment from healing Soul Masters and eventually consideration of a dangerous craniotomy 113 117 140.

Tang Hao’s Arrival and Further Injury

Tang Hao arrives at Shrek after learning of Tang San’s condition. Tang San fails to recognize his father, attacks him, and bites his chest; Tang Hao pushes him away, worsening his injuries 173.

After Tang Hao intimidates and harms Shrek’s teachers, Zhao Wuji follows Lin Ye’s advice to retaliate against Tang Hao through Tang San. Tang San, who had only begun to improve under treatment, is beaten into a more dazed condition 177 179.

Temporary Recovery and Relapse

Tang San eventually regains his sanity for a brief period and appears at the academy gate to block Xiao Wu’s path. At this point, his soul power has reached level 65 198 199.

Xiao Wu reveals that she has likewise reached level 65. The shock overwhelms Tang San, and he regresses into his former mentally impaired state after Xiao Wu strikes him and rejects his confused attempt to call her his mother 199 200.

Tang San is tied up and receives only minimal care at Shrek, with Yu Xiaogang forced to look after him 200 209. When Shrek later travels to Heaven Dou City, Flender brings Tang San along rather than leave him behind, fearing consequences should Tang Hao return 225. Liu Erlong subsequently orders that Tang San remain under Yu Xiaogang’s care 241.
