Background / History

Shrek Academy’s financial difficulties

Flender was once a renowned figure in the Soul Master World under the name Four-Eyed Owl, but later disappeared from public view. By the time Ye Zhiqiu learns that he runs Shrek Academy, Flender is a Soul Saint 98.

Shrek’s poor finances are partly the result of Flender’s insistence on independence. He rejects funding from the Balak Kingdom because it would require graduates to serve the kingdom, restricting their futures. Without sponsorship, the academy struggles to maintain its facilities and sometimes delays teachers’ salaries. His refusal also leaves Shrek without the rating required to enter the Advanced Soul Master Tournament 37 206.

New recruits and renovation

While trying to secure Dai Mubai’s release from Spirit Hall custody, Flender encounters Lin Ye, Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing, and Ning Rongrong in a restaurant. The girls use his own rule against teachers taking advantage of students to make him responsible for the meal. Lin Ye saves him embarrassment by discreetly supplying a pouch containing the required 120 Gold Soul Coins 35 36.

Flender’s irritation disappears when he learns the newcomers’ cultivation levels, particularly Lin Ye’s level sixty-five at twelve years old. He becomes determined to retain them, even at considerable personal expense 36 37.

Ning Rongrong subsequently supplies one million Gold Soul Coins as initial renovation funding. Flender accepts her requests for new dormitories, teaching buildings, and professional chefs, then personally supervises demolition and construction 38 51.

Lin Ye’s special position

Flender and Zhao Wuji conclude that Lin Ye has his own cultivation methods and likely attends Shrek to gain experience rather than instruction. They exempt him from ordinary training while retaining his identity as a Shrek student. Flender also entrusts him with leading a Soul Ring hunt despite his youth 48 53.

He respects Lin Ye’s ownership of the Trial Tower, refusing to grant Oscar and Ma Hongjun access without its creator’s permission. When Ma Hongjun nevertheless triggers the tower’s defenses, Flender carries him into the air while Zhao Wuji intercepts the attack 127 128.

Lin Ye later gives Flender a level-nine defensive Soul Tool for academy security. Bibi Dong also provides funding when arranging Hu Liena’s temporary stay, which Flender welcomes for both its financial benefit and its potential to publicize Shrek 141 156.

Breakdown of his friendship with Yu Xiaogang

Flender initially places great confidence in his longtime friend Yu Xiaogang and introduces him as an instructor responsible for the students’ cultivation. Their relationship deteriorates as Yu repeatedly targets Lin Ye, attempts to claim authority over his inventions, and brings scandal to the academy 107 120 123 127.

A decisive breach occurs when Yu invokes the Clear Sky Sect to demand that Flender arrange Tang San’s treatment. Flender refuses to accept the academy’s responsibility for Yu’s mistakes and realizes that concealing Tang San’s parentage exposed Shrek to the conflict between Tang Hao and Spirit Hall 165 166.

After Tang Hao assaults him, Flender gives a factual account of Tang San’s provocation rather than supporting Yu’s accusations against Lin Ye. He later openly accuses Yu of deliberately bringing Tang San to Shrek so the academy would protect him. Although their old friendship prevents Flender from immediately expelling Yu, Yu loses influence over academy management 174 180 209 211.

Relocation to Heaven Dou City

Seeking a route into the Advanced Soul Master Tournament, Flender considers Qin Ming’s proposal to temporarily compete under Heaven Dou Academy’s name. He consults the other teachers before deciding to move Shrek to Heaven Dou City, allowing three days for preparations 221 222 224.

The planned cooperation becomes a confrontation after Shrek learns that Yu Tianheng ordered an attack on Ye Lingling. Flender supports her demand for justice, rebukes Qin Ming for minimizing the matter, and joins Zhao Wuji in charging into Heaven Dou Academy. The incident ends with extensive destruction rather than a merger 229 231 233 235.

Flender then accepts Dugu Yan into Shrek and continues searching for an advanced academy. Liu Erlong takes in the group, renames Blue Tyrant Academy as Shrek Academy, and appoints him dean. Flender organizes a celebration when the change becomes official 235 239 246.

Independence and expanded opportunities

In Heaven Dou City, Flender declares that Shrek will remain neutral rather than join an empire, clan, or Soul Master faction, while accepting students from different backgrounds. Dugu Bo agrees to explain this position to the Heaven Dou Royal Family 250.

Flender gains permission to train in Lin Ye’s Advanced Trial Tower, hoping to progress from Soul Saint to Soul Douluo. He also proposes a ranking-based scholarship system, supported by Lin Ye, to encourage students’ cultivation 252 281.

Appearance

  • Middle-aged man with slicked-back hair and single-sided glasses 35.
  • His hairstyle and presentation give him a shrewd impression when Lin Ye’s group first encounters him 35.

Personality

Flender is openly money-conscious. Paying an unexpected restaurant bill causes him visible distress, while Ning Rongrong’s donation leaves him delighted. At the Great Soul Arena, he wagers on his students and earns several million Gold Soul Coins, regretting that he did not bet more aggressively 36 38 214.

His concern for money does not erase his responsibility toward students. He refuses royal funding that would limit graduates’ choices, rescues Ma Hongjun from the Trial Tower’s defenses, and investigates the Imperial Fighting Team’s intentions before accepting a lucrative match offer 37 128 214.

Pride and reputation strongly influence his decisions. He wants Shrek’s prodigies to make the academy famous, but later refuses to solve its tournament eligibility entirely through Lin Ye’s connections because he feels he has already accepted too much from his student 37 156 235.

Flender remains attached to old friendships, but does not indefinitely excuse misconduct. His treatment of Yu Xiaogang shifts from enthusiastic endorsement to distrust, while his friendly reunion with Qin Ming ends in a rupture when Qin tries to downplay the attack on Ye Lingling 107 209 219 231.
