Background / History
Poison Backlash and Family Loss
Dugu Bo’s own Jade Phosphorus Snake Poison tormented him for decades. It originated from his martial soul and soul rings rather than an external poisoning, eventually penetrating his organs and bone marrow. He lived at the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well for much of the year because its ice and fire energies helped suppress the toxins 19 21 29.
After the deaths of his son and daughter-in-law, his granddaughter Dugu Yan became his only remaining family and emotional anchor. He raised her affectionately and personally selected her early spirit rings 20 26 28.
Despite his title, Dugu Bo was regarded as the weakest Titled Douluo. During an earlier clash with Chrysanthemum Douluo Yue Guan, Prince Xue Xing brought an army to assist him, saving him from a potentially fatal outcome 30 36.
Alliance with “Lan Chen”
Lu Chen approached Dugu Bo while disguised as a middle-aged Spirit Emperor named Lan Chen. His purpose was to secure a Titled Douluo’s assistance in obtaining the 85,000-year Blue Silver King as his seventh spirit ring. After Lu Chen purified the formation protecting Dugu Bo’s retreat, Dugu Bo initially considered killing him because his detoxifying ability threatened the foundation of Dugu Bo’s power 17 18.
Lu Chen accurately identified Dugu Bo’s poisoning symptoms and offered treatment. Dugu Bo agreed under threat of death if the attempt failed, then changed his attitude after experiencing the effects of Blue Silver Baptism. Unbeknownst to him, Lu Chen deliberately stopped the initial treatment early to preserve his value as a healer 18 19.
The two bonded over drinks at Dugu Mansion and became sworn brothers. Dugu Bo then brought Lu Chen to Heaven Dou Royal Academy to treat Dugu Yan, guarded the treatment room, and pledged to repay the kindness 19 20 21.
Retreat and Recovery
When Gu Rong threatened Lu Chen following his refusal to join the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect, Dugu Bo confronted him despite being weaker. Recognizing that he could not defeat Sword Douluo and Bone Douluo with Ning Fengzhi supporting them, he nevertheless promised to protect Lu Chen even at the cost of his life 23 24.
Dugu Bo and Lu Chen escaped Heaven Dou City at night and hid at the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well. Dugu Bo permitted Lu Chen to use the garden’s herbs and retrieved Dugu Yan before enemies could take her hostage. Lu Chen subsequently guided Dugu Yan’s dragon evolution, completed Dugu Bo’s detoxification, and recommended the Earth Dragon Golden Melon for him 24 26 27 29 30.
The melon evolved Dugu Bo’s martial soul into the Jade Phosphorus Snake Ancestor. Although he had hoped to become a dragon, he accepted that his established martial-soul growth path could not be redirected by that herb 30 31.
Blue Silver King Hunt
Dugu Bo accompanied Lu Chen and Dugu Yan to the Blue Silver Forest. While Lu Chen countered the Blue Silver King’s domain, Dugu Bo attacked with Jade Phosphorus Snake Emperor Break and his Martial Soul True Body. Lu Chen’s group-cast support increased all his attributes by 300% during the battle 31 32.
His ninth skill, Jade Phosphorus Divine Light, overwhelmed the beast’s regenerative vitality with corrosive poison. Lu Chen purified the remaining toxins and healed Dugu Bo, who then guarded him during the spirit-ring absorption 33.
Afterward, Dugu Bo deliberately withdrew with Dugu Yan while Lu Chen obtained the beast’s spirit bone, avoiding both temptation and knowledge of the acquisition 35.
Retaliation Against the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect
With Lu Chen’s support, Dugu Bo defeated Chen Xin during the sect trio’s interception. A 400% amplification enabled him to immobilize Sword Douluo with Time Solidification and inflict devastating injuries with a tail strike. Gu Rong escaped with Chen Xin and Ning Fengzhi through a Gate of Space 37 38 39.
Dugu Bo then retaliated through covert poisoning. Within ten days, more than 300 sect spirit masters died and over 500 others suffered severe poisoning. Ning Fengzhi sought mediation through Xue Qinghe and offered a 50,000-year Human-Faced Demon Spider Emperor Right Leg Bone for an antidote 41.
Dugu Bo consulted Lu Chen before accepting the exchange, then warned Ning Fengzhi against targeting him again. He intended the spirit bone for Dugu Yan. Although the surviving disciples received treatment, many were left with permanently damaged cultivation potential 42 43 90.
Spirit-Beast Hunts and Spirit Hall Conflict
Dugu Bo continued helping Lu Chen obtain powerful spirit rings. In Star Dou Forest, he poisoned the soil around the Ziyang Life-Returning Ginseng to prevent its Earth Escape, enabling Lu Chen to corner the 100,000-year spirit beast and negotiate its sacrifice 46 47 48.
He later fought Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo during a Spirit Hall ambush. Lu Chen’s healing, shielding, and soul-power recovery support kept him combat-ready until the two enemies retreated. Despite this victory, Dugu Bo refused to retaliate against Spirit Hall through poisoning, recognizing the danger posed by its secluded senior powerhouses 51 52 53.
Longevity Sect Leadership
Dugu Bo remained in seclusion with Dugu Yan while Lu Chen was absent, knowing that he could not face the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect trio alone. When Lu Chen returned and invited him to help establish the Longevity Sect and Longevity Academy, he initially resisted joining a faction but ultimately agreed for Dugu Yan’s sake 102 103.
As Inner Sect Grand Elder, he oversaw the sect and controlled disciple promotions. Lu Chen entrusted routine administration to him, allowing himself to remain a largely hands-off sect leader 106 127 138 140.
Dugu Bo also used his connection to Prince Xue Xing to pressure the Strength Clan after Titan refused recruitment. Rather than openly compromising the Longevity Sect’s reputation, he sent a letter that prompted the prince to close the clan’s blacksmith shops under various pretexts 151.
He continued briefing Lu Chen on continental affairs during his absences. Near the end of the story, he handed over his responsibilities and expressed anticipation about visiting the God Realm 142 184 214.
Appearance
Dugu Bo initially appears as an emaciated, black-robed old man with a gaunt face and an intimidating, sinister expression 17 18.
- Before detoxification: Long dark-green hair obscures half his face; his emerald eyes have a sickly, hollow quality 17.
- Beard: He is shown stroking his beard while speaking with Lu Chen and Dugu Yan 20.
- After detoxification: His hair turns completely white, his expression becomes tranquil, and he resembles an ordinary elderly man rather than the fearsome Poison Douluo 30.
Personality
Dugu Bo repays both kindness and grudges. His initial willingness to kill Lu Chen changes into fierce loyalty once the young spirit master helps him and Dugu Yan. He is prepared to risk his life for Lu Chen, but retaliates against their enemies with prolonged, devastating poison attacks 18 21 24 41.
His greatest vulnerability is concern for Dugu Yan. He fears losing her after already burying his son, becomes anxious during her martial-soul evolution, and objects when she attempts a dangerous spirit-ring absorption. He also struggles with her growing affection for Lu Chen before reluctantly accepting the relationship 21 27 43 45.
Dugu Bo values his dignity as a Titled Douluo and welcomes a position matching that standing. His confidence grows markedly after defeating Chen Xin, yet he remains practical enough to hide from opponents he cannot defeat and to avoid provoking Spirit Hall’s senior elders 24 39 53 106.
He openly covets powerful spirit bones, but can exercise restraint: he leaves Lu Chen alone with a valuable acquisition rather than expose himself to temptation 35 138.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphorus Snake Ancestor
- Evolves from the Jade Phosphorus Snake Emperor after refining the Earth Dragon Golden Melon 30 31.
- Gains an earth attribute, improving defense and helping suppress poison within his body 31 38.
- Continuously draws energy from the earth to restore soul power while his feet remain planted on the ground 31.
- Does not become a dragon: Dugu Bo concludes that his martial-soul origin and growth path were fixed upon reaching Titled Douluo 30.
Poison Arts
- Creates poison formations and miasma to protect his secluded retreat 17.
- Uses soul power to distribute Jade Phosphorus Snake Poison underground. During the ginseng hunt, he contaminates a 1,000-meter radius within minutes, withering plants and blocking Earth Escape 47.
- Conducts covert poison attacks capable of devastating an organization without direct confrontation 41.
- Teaches poison refining, antidote preparation, cultivation, and combat experience to Dugu Yan 46.
- Initially suffers backlash from his own martial-soul poison; purification alone does not address its recurring source 19 21.
Jade Phosphorus True Body
His seventh spirit skill transforms him into a massive Jade Phosphorus Giant Python 32.
- His original True Body reached approximately 30 meters in length 32.
- Martial-soul evolution and Lu Chen’s 300% amplification increase it to 50 meters during the Blue Silver King hunt 32.
- He is later shown using a 40-meter python form against Yue Guan 51.
- The transformed body supports physical attacks, powerful tail strikes, and the use of his other spirit skills 32 39 51.
Time Solidification
His eighth spirit skill confines an opponent, creating an opening for a decisive attack 39 53.
- Immobilizes Chen Xin while Sword Douluo is preparing his eighth skill 39.
- Consumes enormous soul power; that feat relies on Lu Chen’s 400% amplification 39.
- Is a control ability, not sufficient by itself to instantly kill two Titled Douluos 53.
Jade Phosphorus Divine Light
His ninth spirit skill releases emerald rays of intensely corrosive poison 33.
- Damages the Blue Silver King’s trunk, branches, and leaves, overcoming its vitality 33.
- Uses the victim’s body as a breeding ground, allowing the poison to replicate and multiply 33.
- Is an indiscriminate area-of-effect attack 53.
- Dugu Bo rarely used it previously because even he could not resolve the spreading poison; Lu Chen later purifies the residue 33.
Other Documented Spirit Skills

| Jade Phosphorus Snake Emperor Break | Sixth | Condenses and launches a black orb of highly toxic energy; the orb reaches two meters in diameter against the Blue Silver King 32. |
Combat Support and Limits
- Lu Chen’s amplification, healing, shielding, and recovery skills substantially increase Dugu Bo’s effectiveness against stronger Titled Douluos 32 38 39 52.
- His victory over Chen Xin does not establish superior unassisted strength; he later acknowledges that the sect trio would overwhelm him without Lu Chen 39 102.
- He has not mastered a domain when he observes Lu Chen’s Blue Silver Domain 29.
- Before his recovery, his poison is especially dangerous to low-level spirit masters but ineffective against high-level opponents 39.
Equipment & Resources
- Two 20,000-year spirit bones — Their absorption raises his soul power from level 95 to 96; their types and skills are not specified 104 106.
- Additional spirit bones — Receives access to spoils from the Clear Sky Sect. He expects completing a six-bone set to make level 98 attainable, but this is an expectation rather than a confirmed breakthrough 138.
- Substitute Blue Silver Emperor — Gifted by Lu Chen; absorbs a fatal injury in the recipient’s place, effectively granting an additional life 48.
- 50,000-year Human-Faced Demon Spider Emperor Right Leg Bone — Accepts it as payment for the antidote, then gives it to Dugu Yan rather than absorbing it himself 42 43 44.
- Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well herb garden — His secret retreat contains numerous immortal herbs and poisonous plants. He permits Lu Chen to harvest useful herbs after being assured that Lu Chen can identify them safely 24.
- Heaven Dou Guest Elder Token — Hands it to Lu Chen while asking him to spare Prince Xue Xing 127.
Relationships
- Lu Chen / Lan Chen — Healer, sworn brother, combat partner, and later sect leader. Their initially transactional alliance develops into mutual trust; Dugu Bo protects him, supports his spirit-ring hunts, and manages his sect 19 21 24 33 106 138.
- Dugu Yan — Granddaughter, only surviving family, and chosen inheritor of his poison arts. He personally selects her early rings, later teaches her directly, and prioritizes her safety 20 28 39 46.
- Prince Xue Xing — Former lifesaver and political connection. Dugu Bo asks Lu Chen to spare him as repayment, then later relies on him to suppress the Strength Clan 36 127 151.
- Ning Fengzhi — Enemy during the dispute over Lu Chen. Dugu Bo’s retaliation forces him to seek an antidote and offer a spirit bone in settlement 24 41 42.
- Chen Xin — Stronger rival defeated through Dugu Bo and Lu Chen’s combined abilities. Dugu Bo’s attack leaves him severely injured and shaken 37 38 39 40.
- Gu Rong — Opponent who threatens Lu Chen and clashes with Dugu Bo; later rescues Chen Xin and Ning Fengzhi from their defeat 23 39.
