Background / History

The Senju Clan is one of the major ninja clans during the Warring States era and is locked in an increasingly bitter struggle with the Uchiha Clan for the title of strongest clan. Their rivalry is marked by repeated battlefield casualties, deep mutual suspicion, and fear of the Sharingan. 1 3 16

Despite this hostility, the clan accepts commissions pragmatically. Senju Arashi’s squad is hired by Daimyo Takeda to assist Hayasaka Sae, even though the Senju had recently fought Takeda’s forces and lost members to Uchiha employed by them. Arashi states that a commissioned ninja must fulfill the job without allowing personal feelings to interfere. 15

The clan’s rise is tied to guarding marketplaces. Its territory sits at a transportation hub where trade between countries commonly passes through Senju-controlled land, making the Senju Village more diverse than the Uchiha settlement; many residents belong to other ninja clans rather than the Senju alone. 31

The Senju Village stands near the future site of Konoha Village. At this time it is only a comparatively prosperous village, while the nearby flat-topped mountain is identified as the future Hokage Rock. 31

Following the Mount Hakkoda incident, Senju Raizo uses the story of Uchiha Chigusa and Wuming—Uchiha children persecuted by their own clan—to damage the Uchiha’s standing. Information about the Uchiha’s Sharingan research and Wuming’s treatment is spread to various daimyo, causing some to suspend cooperation with the Uchiha and hire Senju ninja instead. 33 34

The Senju have developed countermeasures against Uchiha genjutsu.

• Ordinary Sharingan genjutsu proves ineffective against Arashi because the clan has long prepared methods to resist it. 18
