Background / History

Chen was originally an unremarkable peripheral Uchiha. He awakened a one-tomoe Sharingan before the Third Shinobi World War and a two-tomoe Sharingan after it began, but was critically wounded soon afterward. Tsunade's treatment saved him, after which his talent and capabilities changed dramatically. Jiraiya later concluded that Chen may no longer have been the same person, though Chen neither confirmed nor denied it. 121 213 214

After returning to Konoha, Chen recognized that his low chakra reserves made the Mangekyō Sharingan unsafe to rely on; a single use of Tsukuyomi had previously exhausted him.
