Background / History

Minato distinguished himself during the Third Shinobi World War, heavily damaging Iwagakure and Kirigakure's main forces. At twenty-five, he and his fourteen-year-old student Hatake Kakashi were recognized as Konoha's two standout performers in the war. 25

He was trained by Jiraiya and formerly led Kakashi, Uchiha Obito, and Nohara Rin. Obito's presumed death and Rin's death at Kakashi's hands left Minato burdened by guilt and concerned for Kakashi's mental state. 26 52

Following the war, Minato succeeded Hiruzen Sarutobi as Konoha's Fourth Hokage. His battlefield reputation, personal character, Jiraiya lineage, and relationship with the Nine-Tails jinchūriki Kushina Uzumaki all contributed to his appointment. 47 49

During the Nine-Tails Incident, an attacker abducted Kushina shortly after Naruto's birth.
