Background / History
Jiraiya is a Konoha shinobi and one of the Legendary Sannin. He is a Sage Mode practitioner associated with Mount Myoboku, where Fukasaku trained him. His reputation as the “Pervy Sage” stems from his habit of spying on women’s bathhouses under the excuse of conducting “research.” 6 210 220
While spying on a bathhouse, Jiraiya senses natural energy being drawn into Uchiha Chen’s home. He investigates and finds Chen practicing Sage Mode, becoming astonished that an Uchiha youth has independently created a cultivation method that produces perfectly balanced sage chakra. 6 7
Impressed by Chen’s talent, Jiraiya immediately offers to take him as an apprentice despite not yet knowing his name. Tsunade arrives soon afterward and contests the offer, leading to a destructive rivalry between the two Sannin. 7 8 10
Although neither Sannin ultimately establishes a conventional master-disciple relationship with Chen, Jiraiya later calls Chen his “little brother” and insists that Namikaze Minato address him as “Uncle-Master.” He teaches Chen the Rasengan and prepares a four-stage training program, only for Chen to master the technique and create advanced variants within a day. 27 28
Jiraiya later accompanies Chen during the conflict with Sunagakure, arriving atop a giant toad to reinforce Konoha’s defenses. Confident in Chen’s abilities, he lets Chen confront Pakura while he supports the wider battlefield. 40
After a period away from the village, Jiraiya returns to find that Konoha has changed drastically through Uchiha Chen’s cultivation methods. He learns of Spirit Qi, the Spirit Gathering Array, and the Qi Refining Technique, then accepts Chen’s instruction to convert chakra into Spirit Power. 209 211 213
Jiraiya subsequently travels to the Land of Rain to investigate Akatsuki. There, he discovers that his former students Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan are connected to Pain and Akatsuki. He battles Orochimaru and the Six Paths of Pain, defeats the Asura and Preta Paths, and returns to Konoha with their bodies and intelligence on Nagato’s Rinnegan control. 215 223
He later brings Chen to Mount Myoboku to meet the Great Toad Sage, then accompanies Chen into Two Realms Mountain. After their expedition, Chen refines a Fire-Attribute Flying Sword for Jiraiya. 224 234
Appearance
Jiraiya is recognizable by his long white hair, the red markings beneath his eyes, and his forehead protector bearing the character for “Oil.” 6
- Long, silver-white hair.
- Red facial markings below the eyes.
- Forehead protector marked with 油 (“Oil”).
- Often adopts dramatic poses when making an entrance. 40
- Uses Sage Mode to greatly intensify his aura and combat ability. 219
Personality
Jiraiya is unconventional, theatrical, and shamelessly proud of both his reputation and his writing. He often behaves frivolously, especially around bathhouses, but treats his peeping as “research” and readily presents copies of Make-Out Paradise as gifts. 6 209 210 214
Despite this unserious exterior, he is perceptive in critical situations. He immediately recognizes the significance of Chen’s Sage Mode, analyzes the Six Paths of Pain’s connection to Nagato, and correctly concludes that the bodies are controlled through the Rinnegan. 7 221 223
He is compassionate even toward enemies. After abducting the Rain shinobi Zhanyuan for intelligence, Jiraiya has no intention of killing him and condemns Orochimaru when Zhanyuan dies in their clash. He also hesitates to lethally harm Pain because of his past as Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan’s teacher. 216 219 220
Jiraiya is willing to acknowledge others’ strength. He praises Naruto after their draw, accepts Uchiha Chen’s Qi Refining instruction, and openly credits Chen for the growth that allows him to fight Pain. 212 213 221 223

- Extracts Pain’s location from the Rain chunin Zhanyuan before releasing him. 216
- Interrogates Xiao Wu after easily defeating him, though a sealing technique kills the captive before he can reveal his leader’s identity. 231
