Background / History

Academy and early missions

Kakashi distinguished himself at the Ninja Academy with a perfect score in the wooden-dummy kunai test. He asked Shimizu Uchiha to graduate early with him, believing the two would likely be assigned together and improve mission success rates; Shimizu declined. Kakashi’s ambition was tied to honoring the reputation of his father, the White Fang of the Leaf 3.

After the White Fang’s suicide, Kakashi became consumed by grief, neglected himself, and withdrew from others. His mission-first conduct led to complaints and ostracism from teammates, but sparring with Shimizu gave him a temporary outlet and helped him refocus on swordsmanship 35 36.

Kakashi was eventually assigned to Minato Namikaze’s team alongside Nohara Rin and Shimizu. He welcomed the assignment, while Rin had worked toward early graduation specifically to join a team with him 60 61.

Third Shinobi World War

During an Iwagakure ambush on Konoha’s medical and transport forces, Kakashi was wounded while carrying Genma Shiranui and Mimura Hamaki out of an Earth Release attack. Despite the injury and Gari’s overwhelming Explosion Release, he chose to hold the enemy back until reinforcements could arrive 112.

He developed Chidori during the war, creating a technique with exceptional speed and destructive power. Minato immediately recognized that Kakashi lacked the control to use it safely, while Shimizu identified its missing weakness: Kakashi could not properly manage its speed without enhanced vision 138.

At the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, Obito entrusted Kakashi with his Sharingan. Kakashi kept the eye despite its chakra burden because he regarded it as Obito’s final, sincere gift; the experience also forced him to understand the value of bonds and comrades too late to continue building one with Obito 152 153.

Anbu service and family

Kakashi entered the Anbu alongside Shimizu. The transplanted Sharingan left him physically strained and emotionally unstable, including pain and hallucinations that Shimizu attributed to the lingering effects of war 151 152.

To ease tensions between Konoha and Kirigakure, Kakashi accepted a political marriage to Chai Daiko. Personality

Kakashi is disciplined, competitive, and deeply shaped by the pressure of living up to the White Fang’s name. Early in his career, he prioritizes objectives so rigidly that teammates resent him, and Konoha’s leadership worries about the “darkness” left by his father’s death 3 36 61.

Though outwardly detached, he is protective of those he considers comrades. He risks himself to delay Gari’s ambush force, keeps Obito’s eye despite its cost, and treats protecting Rin as a duty entrusted to him by Obito 112 153.

His later family life softens this detachment. Kakashi accepts marriage to Daiko out of duty, but becomes genuinely invested in her and their children. This attachment also becomes a vulnerability: Daiko pressures him into revealing classified information by appealing to his fear of losing his family 207 253 370.
