As Agamotto’s heir, Kamar-Taj oversees the Sacred Covenant, an agreement signed roughly a thousand years ago by divine races connected to human civilization. The covenant prohibits those races from interfering with humanity’s development for one thousand Earth years 220.

Kamar-Taj treats magic as a discipline rooted in the soul. Its training requires both magical aptitude and a stable understanding of oneself, society, and the immaterial world 78 391.

Enforcement of the Sacred Covenant

When Loki used the Destroyer Armor against Thor and the Asgardian refugees on Earth, Xiang Qian represented Kamar-Taj in confronting the attack. He declared the order’s authority under the Sacred Covenant and demonstrated its power by redirecting the Destroyer’s laser into its own energy core and severing its arm 219 220.

The Silver Surfer Conflict

During the battle with Silver Surfer, Xiang Qian took control of the destabilizing Mirror Dimension so Wong could escape. His transformation into a magical body allowed him to stabilize the dimension and fight using greatly enhanced spatial magic 240 241.

Chthon’s Invasion

Following the Ancient One’s death, Chthon’s projection attacked Kamar-Taj through a dense blood mist that disoriented, exhausted, and eventually threatened to drive its sorcerers mad 384 385. Wong and the other defenders protected the sanctuary during a simultaneous spacecraft assault, while Xiang Qian and Wanda fought within the Soul Realm to expel Chthon’s influence 387 388.

Defense of the Infinity Stones

Kamar-Taj came to hold the Time, Mind, and Reality Stones, making it a target for extraterrestrial forces led by Ebony Maw. Xiang Qian refused to surrender the Stones under threat of attacks on Kamar-Taj and Earth’s cities 389 391. The protection of the Time Stone was later identified as the Sorcerer Supreme’s foremost responsibility 391.
