Background / History
Tony Stark was Stark Industries’ leading inventor and a prominent arms manufacturer. Before becoming Iron Man, he completed the Jericho Missile and was pressured by Obadiah Stane and Stark Industries’ board to focus on sales, orders, and stock prices rather than invention. He was also known for his heavy drinking, extravagant parties, playboy image, and reliance on Pepper Potts as his executive assistant. 23 29 50
After being kidnapped in Afghanistan, Tony learned that Stark Industries weapons had entered an illegal arms trade supported by CIA and military personnel. He responded by shutting down the company’s weapons division, intending to stop contributing to the violence caused by his products. 81 102
Tony publicly revealed himself as Iron Man after defeating Obadiah Stane. He subsequently resisted government and military efforts to acquire or mass-produce his armor technology, including a Senate hearing led by Justin Hammer. 149 150 187
His Arc Reactor caused palladium poisoning until Xiang Qian installed an energy-storage device in Tony’s chest reactor that intercepted radiation energy, halting palladium infiltration into his bloodstream. 161
Personality
Tony is flamboyant, arrogant, talkative, and highly competitive. He enjoys showing off new inventions, provoking rivals, and using humor—often crude or poorly timed—to defuse tension. 54 102 148
Despite his public persona, Tony is capable of serious introspection. His kidnapping, the misuse of Stark weapons, and repeated attacks on those close to him push him toward accepting responsibility for Stark Industries’ past. He eventually acknowledges that, because he profited most from the company’s weapons division, he bears responsibility for the harm it caused. 81 102 340
Tony is fiercely protective of Pepper Potts, James Rhodes, Happy Hogan, and other friends. He repeatedly risks himself to protect civilians and refuses to ignore foreseeable casualties, even when intervention would be inconvenient or politically dangerous. 192 209 233 308

- Used a portable Mark Armor to protect Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan during Ivan Vanko’s Monaco attack. 192 193
- Recognized the need for specialized close-combat armor after his standard suit proved ineffective against Hulk and Abomination. 202
- Tested the Mark 43 Prototype against Pietro Maximoff’s super-speed, using Jarvis’s calculations to predict and disrupt Pietro’s movements. 339 340
- Used multiple armors and environmental tactics to wear down Aldrich Killian’s Extremis-enhanced body. 311 313
