Background

Xiao Wu is a hundred-thousand-year-old soul beast who took human form and enrolled at Notting Academy. Her initial martial soul is the Soft Bone Rabbit, and she possesses innate full soul power. Her disguised identity leaves her vulnerable: Tang Hao had intended to imprison her for Tang San's eventual use as a soul ring, though Tang Wulin tells her that Xiao Wu's ring is unsuitable for Tang San and gives her the choice to leave or remain under his protection 11 14.

Her first encounter with Tang San is hostile. After she uses his new bedding, Tang San attacks her without warning; she evades his opening strike through her natural vigilance and Soft Bone Rabbit possession, but cannot overcome him with only one ring. Tang Wulin intervenes, has both children apologize, and permits Xiao Wu to call him teacher 10 11 12.

Rather than leave Notting Academy, Xiao Wu stays to cultivate and repay Tang Wulin's kindness. She develops a powerful maternal affection toward him, viewing him as her own child and searching for a suitable future partner for him 15 27.

Xiao Wu is vigilant, emotional, and fiercely protective of Tang Wulin. Her affection for him is explicitly maternal in nature; she worries over his safety, resents Tang San for taking him away on trips, and considers herself responsible for finding him a worthy partner 27 39 45.

She is also blunt and combative. She rejects Yu Xiaogang's attempt to recruit her, later humiliating and beating him, and readily joins Tang San in acting against him after his attempt on Tang Wulin 27 28 43. Her rivalry with Tang San remains constant, with both accusing the other of causing trouble and competing for Tang Wulin's attention 50 78 81.
