Background / History
Policing and Political Exclusion
After the First Hokage’s death, the Uchiha were assigned to the high-ranking Konoha Military Police Force. The position gave them authority but damaged their standing among civilians. Their arrogance and friction with other major clans also weakened their reputation beyond the village’s ordinary population 29.
Under the Third Hokage, the clan faced a combination of appeasement and coercion. Sarutobi Hiruzen indicated that Fugaku could compete for the Hokage position, while Danzo continued targeting the Uchiha following Uchiha Kagami’s death. Fugaku’s candidacy ultimately failed 29 30.
Fugaku’s good personal relationship with Namikaze Minato brought the clan a temporary reprieve. The improving relationship with Konoha encouraged the doves and even softened the hawks’ stance; Itachi and Shisui emerged during this period of cooperation 30.
After the Nine-Tails Rebellion
The Nine-Tails displayed Sharingan eyes during its rampage, and Minato died in the ensuing crisis. Although Konoha’s leadership had no evidence implicating the clan, it suspected Uchiha involvement. At Danzo’s urging, the clan was relocated to the desolate outskirts and placed under surveillance by both Anbu and Root 30.
Growing resentment allowed the Hawk Faction to dominate the clan’s internal discussion. By Year 56, the hawks and doves were openly divided, Fugaku struggled to resolve the crisis, and clan meetings were becoming increasingly frequent 1 4 30.
Yan’s Preparations
Shisui proposed using Kotoamatsukami to control Fugaku and stop the coup. Danzo instead stole one of his eyes and sent Root operatives after him. Shisui concealed the attack from Fugaku because he believed its disclosure would trigger an immediate uprising and the clan’s destruction 6 7.
Yan killed Shisui in front of Itachi, allowing Itachi to awaken his Mangekyō Sharingan before killing him as well. He took their eyes and used forged suicide notes to delay the clan’s reaction. He then manipulated Danzo with Kotoamatsukami, redirecting his immediate ambitions toward overthrowing Hiruzen rather than exterminating the Uchiha 7 8 9.
Danzo subsequently approached the clan with a proposed alliance against the Hokage, offering Fugaku an advisory position and promising the Uchiha the Seventh Hokage seat. Fugaku publicly rejected the offer. Ahead of Orochimaru’s attack, Setsuna agreed to place the Hawk Faction under Yan’s command 15 16 29.
The Konoha Crush and Seizure of Power
During the invasion, Yan and most hawks deliberately held back in their engagements. The faction suffered only one minor injury; several doves were seriously injured, but no Uchiha were killed. Once Konoha gained the upper hand, Yan ordered the gentler Dove Faction members to evacuate injured civilians, using relief work to improve the clan’s public image 31 32 35.
Yan killed Danzo during the crisis and later captured Orochimaru. Rather than surrendering Orochimaru to the village advisors, he confined him in the Uchiha Prison. Fugaku accepted the move, personally guarded the prisoner, and sealed the prison against unauthorized entry 34 41 43.
The clan then framed the personal guards of Koharu and Homura as Sunagakure spies, killed them, and restricted the advisors’ movements under the pretext of protection. Jiraiya declined to intervene in the power struggle 48.
Fugaku drew Nara Shikaku into the investigation of Danzo’s staged suicide. Confronted by hundreds of Sharingan-bearing Uchiha elites, Shikaku recognized that refusal could put the Ino-Shika-Cho clans in direct conflict with the Uchiha. He subsequently endorsed the public account blaming Danzo for the deaths of the advisors, Shisui, and Itachi 53 54.
Consolidation Under Yan
With Yan in power, the clan’s survival strategy shifted from resisting exclusion to controlling Konoha’s institutions. Fugaku acknowledged that Yan had brought the Uchiha out of their political abyss, even as his own importance as clan head diminished 56 57.
Yan mobilized Konoha against Sunagakure and led the surprise attack that devastated the village. He later distributed advanced ninjutsu and financial rewards to civilian shinobi, expanding support for his government beyond the established clans. By the Three Kage meeting, he was explicitly recognized as Konoha’s Fifth Hokage 60 64 67 97.
Leadership and Factions
| Faction | Leadership | Position and Conduct |
|---|---|---|
| Hawk Faction | Setsuna serves as its elder spokesperson and patron; command passes to Yan 29. | Resists the clan’s persecution and increasingly controls internal discussion after the forced relocation. Its members back Yan’s bid to exploit Konoha’s political crisis 1 29 30. |
| Dove Faction | No faction leader is identified in the supplied chapters. | Associated with reconciliation during Minato’s tenure. Its generally gentler members are later assigned civilian rescue work by Yan 30 35. |
- Uchiha Fugaku — Formal clan head. Initially indecisive, but later supports retaining Orochimaru and helps secure Shikaku’s cooperation in the takeover 1 43 53.
- Uchiha Yan — Hawk-raised prodigy, Military Police Force captain, and later Fifth Hokage. His growing authority overshadows Fugaku’s formal leadership 1 23 57 97.
- Uchiha Setsuna — Warring States veteran who selects Yan as the hawks’ future leader, funds his development, and protects him after his clashes with Root 29.
Notable Members
- Uchiha Itachi — Anbu member who reports Yan’s activities to Hiruzen and prioritizes the village over clan politics. Yan kills him immediately after his Mangekyō awakening 3 4 7.
- Uchiha Shisui — Anbu member and Kotoamatsukami wielder who seeks to prevent the coup through mind control. Loses an eye to Danzo before being killed by Yan 1 6 7.
- Uchiha Izumi — Police patrol partner and childhood sweetheart of Yan; attends clan meetings alongside him 1 4 29.
- Uchiha Inabi — Enforces the advisors’ confinement and later accompanies Yan to the Land of Iron as a Kage guard. Possesses a Three-Tomoe Sharingan 48 95 97.

- Uchiha Sasuke — Fugaku’s younger son; remains with the family after Itachi disappears 20 43.
- Uchiha Kagami — Deceased elder whose Sharingan was used by Danzo. Setsuna associates Kagami’s influence with the pro–Will of Fire outlook of Fugaku’s generation 6 29.
Abilities and Military Strength
Sharingan
The clan’s ocular bloodline is central to its combat strength and to Danzo’s plans to seize its resources 9 53.
- Genjutsu: Yan subdues Itachi with a glance despite both possessing Three-Tomoe Sharingan 3.
- Dynamic vision: Yan uses his Three-Tomoe Sharingan to evade Danzo’s Wind Release projectiles 8.
- Genjutsu defense: Yan counters C’s illusion at the Three Kage meeting 97.
- Elite manpower: Hundreds of Uchiha with awakened Sharingan participate in the confrontation that secures Shikaku’s cooperation 53.
Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo
These abilities belong to particular wielders, not to every clan member.
- Shisui: Uses Kotoamatsukami to alter a target’s will and manifests a green Susanoo. Using Susanoo with one eye severely exhausts him after blood loss 6 7.
- Itachi: Awakens Mangekyō Sharingan upon witnessing Shisui’s death 7.
- Yan: Uses Itachi’s transplanted eyes with Hashirama Cells, achieving endurance comparable to Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan without being identified as possessing that eye stage 60.
- Yan’s later Susanoo: Develops into a red Perfect Susanoo, while Hashirama Cells prevent the usual Mangekyō side effects from impairing his eyes 92.
Fire Release and Individual Specializations
- Fire Release: Anbu investigators consider Uchiha involvement when they discover evidence of a powerful Fire Release battle 5.
- Yan’s Scorch Release: A specialization he mastered at twelve; it is not presented as a clan-wide ability 1.
- System-acquired techniques: Yan obtains Kamui and Kotoamatsukami through killing-system rewards rather than awakening those techniques naturally 5 7.
Institutions and Resources
- Uchiha compound — Residential district on Konoha’s outskirts, imposed through forced relocation after the Nine-Tails incident 30.
- Naka Shrine — Clan meeting venue. Only shinobi may attend, a restriction Fugaku uses to shield noncombatant clansmen from coup discussions 4.
- Clan Head’s residence — Fugaku’s mansion stands in the center of the Uchiha residential district 20.
- Konoha Military Police Force — Provides patrols, maintains order, and expands its coverage as foreign shinobi arrive for the Chunin Exams. Patrol fines go directly to the clan 3 22.
- Uchiha Prison — Holds the captured Orochimaru under barriers and Fugaku’s personal guard 43.
- Training funds — Setsuna invests in Yan at an estimated three times the cost of producing a qualified Three-Tomoe Sharingan shinobi 29.
- Commercial redevelopment — Under Yan’s plan, the clan profits from construction expenses, civilians receive storefronts, and Konoha earns interest 96.
Relationships
- Konoha’s civilians — Initially fear harsh Uchiha policing. Yan later cultivates support through protection from foreign shinobi, civilian evacuation, and broader access to advanced ninjutsu 1 23 35 67.
- Sarutobi Hiruzen — Combines appeasement with surveillance, using Itachi to monitor Yan while tolerating Root’s scrutiny of the clan 4 29 30.
- Danzo and Root — Principal persecutors who monitor the compound, seize Sharingan, and plan the clan’s extermination. Yan manipulates and ultimately kills Danzo 6 9 30 34.
- Namikaze Minato — Fugaku’s personal friend; his Hokage tenure briefly improves the clan’s position 30.
- Koharu and Homura — Advisors who attempt to blame the Police Force for the invasion and reclaim Orochimaru. The Uchiha neutralize their guards and confine them 38 43 48.
- Jiraiya — Recognizes the Uchiha as a founding clan and refuses to stop their seizure of political power 48.
- Nara Shikaku and the Ino-Shika-Cho clans — Pressured into legitimizing the Uchiha takeover through Shikaku’s public endorsement of the evidence against Danzo 53 54.
- Hyuga clan — Avoids the initial upheaval by sealing its grounds; Hiashi later cooperates with Yan in war and serves beside Inabi as a Kage guard 53 60 95.
