Background / History

Newgate was stranded on a deserted island after being blown there by the sea, where he encountered Carl, who had suffered the same misfortune. Intrigued by Carl’s unusually powerful life force, he shared a meal with him and revealed that he was the Second Division Captain of the Rocks Pirates. 5

Carl challenged Newgate in order to earn passage to Hachinosu. Their extended spar demonstrated Carl’s potential, while Newgate’s superior experience and Tremor-Tremor Fruit power ultimately overwhelmed him. Newgate nevertheless acknowledged Carl’s strength and allowed him to sail with his crew. 5 6

During the Navy’s attempt to encircle his ship, Newgate fought Sengoku and Garp simultaneously while Carl held Steel Bone Kong at bay. He did not pursue the retreating Marines, citing the casualties his crew had already suffered. 9 10

Newgate later supported Carl’s rise within the Rocks Pirates, advising him on Devil Fruits, Armament Haki, Observation Haki, and dangerous opponents. He personally trained Carl until Carl awakened Observation Haki after thirteen days. 15 25 26 33

At God Valley, Newgate participated in the decisive war between the Rocks Pirates and the Navy. He initially faced Garp amid the opening clashes, later dueling Sengoku with Conqueror’s Haki-coated Murakumogiri and his Tremor-Tremor Fruit. During the battle, Buckin secretly collected his blood for MADS-related cloning research. 152 157 160

After the Rocks Pirates’ era, Newgate established the Whitebeard Pirates and became one of the dominant powers of the New World. He gathered a large family-like crew, including Marco, and eventually recruited Kozuki Oden and Oden’s nine retainers after defeating Oden in battle and judging that he had not come to plunder. 225 226 294

Newgate later maintained a friendly rivalry with Gol D. Roger. Their crews fought for two days to give their subordinates experience before Newgate and Roger drank together; Newgate subsequently allowed Oden to accompany Roger for one year on Roger’s final voyage. 246 325

When Marshall D. Teach murdered Thatch and stole the Dark-Dark Fruit, Newgate’s family suffered a decisive betrayal. He led the Whitebeard Pirates to Marineford to rescue Ace, refused to abandon his sons after their escape, and remained behind to confront the Marines and Teach. Newgate ultimately killed Teach after defeating Teach’s crew, preventing him from taking the Tremor-Tremor Fruit. 458 483 507 526 527 528

Appearance

At this point in his life, Newgate is a massive young man with a full head of golden hair, making Carl initially fail to recognize him as the future “Whitebeard.” 4 5

  • Stands approximately 6.6 meters tall. 4
  • Wields an enormous bladed glaive; it was initially described as a four-meter-long weapon and later as nearly ten meters long. 5 25
  • His weapon was initially referred to as the Kusanagi Blade, while later accounts identify his principal glaive as Murakumogiri. 9 225 398
  • Retains a youthful, battle-hungry demeanor rather than the older appearance associated with the name “Whitebeard.” 4 23
  • Even in later years, Pure Gold preserves his body in its prime, preventing the physical decline normally associated with age. 461 522

Personality

Newgate is boisterous, sociable, and fond of drinking, often celebrating victories and reunions with large banquets. He values freedom and treats his subordinates well; his crew includes former slaves, abandoned criminals, and adventurers who follow him on the sea. 5 6 10

Despite his intimidating strength, he is patient with promising allies. He recognizes Carl’s talent early, trains him in Haki, offers practical combat advice, and warns him against rushing his development. 6 15 25 26 39 41

He seeks challenging opponents but is not indiscriminately bloodthirsty. While he is eager for combat, he shows little interest in treasure and avoids needless slaughter of civilians. 23

As captain of the Whitebeard Pirates, Newgate treats his crew as his sons and considers their safety a personal responsibility. He invited Oden to join after recognizing his character, cultivated his commanders through controlled conflicts, and mobilized his entire force to rescue Ace from Marineford. 225 226 309 483

Newgate is merciless toward those who betray his family. Teach’s murder of Thatch and attempt to steal the Tremor-Tremor Fruit provoked Newgate into personally executing his former subordinate rather than accepting his pleas for mercy. 527 528

Abilities & Skills

Tremor-Tremor Fruit

Newgate’s Devil Fruit generates devastating vibrations and shockwaves, capable of shattering the air and producing massive sea disturbances.

  • Uses Quake Punch to fracture the space before his fist and launch destructive shockwaves. 6 10
  • Used Great Earth Quake to send Garp flying into the sea. 9
  • Can channel tremor power through his weapon as a ranged Shockwave attack. 9
  • His power was sufficient to make Carl unable to withstand a direct strike during their first serious spar. 6
  • His attacks can shatter the air as though it were glass and were publicly described as capable of creating tsunamis and triggering great earthquakes. 160
  • Punched an island apart while fighting the Navy at full strength. 225
  • Generated a massive seaquake at Marineford by striking the air with both fists, filling the sky with fissures and threatening the battlefield with immense waves. 507
  • The fruit’s use ordinarily inflicts hidden damage upon its user, particularly during prolonged combat, but Newgate’s exceptional physique and Pure Gold-preserved body allow him to endure its strain while remaining in his prime. 315 461 522

Haki

Newgate is proficient in multiple forms of Haki.

  • Observation Haki — detected the approaching Navy fleet, including Steel Bone Kong, Garp, and Sengoku. 8
  • Armament Haki — coats his body and Kusanagi Blade in battle. 26 27
  • Conqueror’s Haki — clashed with Carl’s Conqueror’s Haki and pressured him to draw out greater output. 27 28
  • Conqueror’s Haki Coating — learned the technique after studying Rocks’ method with Carl and used it to coat Murakumogiri. 101
  • Used Conqueror’s Haki coating against Sengoku at God Valley and against Kozuki Oden, overwhelming Oden’s own coated two-sword attack. 157 225

Swordsmanship

Newgate is a highly capable weapon user who combines swordsmanship with his physical power and Haki.

  • Wields the Kusanagi Blade in combat against Sengoku and Garp. 9
  • Fired repeated waves of sword energy during his duel with Carl. 26
  • Used an Armament-coated blade to intercept Carl’s Golden Light Incantation- and Haki-enhanced punch. 26
  • Wields Murakumogiri with enough force to overwhelm Kozuki Oden’s Conqueror’s Haki-coated blades. 225
  • Slashed Blackbeard with Murakumogiri even after the Dark-Dark Fruit had demonstrated the ability to nullify his Devil Fruit power. 527

Physical Ability

Newgate possesses exceptional raw power, speed, durability, and recovery.

  • His physical strength alone impressed Carl during their first exchange. 5 6
  • Fought Carl from day until night while continuing to pressure him in close combat. 6
  • Withstood Carl’s Palm Lightning despite being injured by the attack. 27
  • Was unharmed after his battle with Cthulhu during the attack on the Tyr Kingdom. 44 47
  • His natural strength was great enough to elevate the Tremor-Tremor Fruit into the strongest Paramecia-type power, despite the fruit’s severe physical burden. 315
  • Remained capable of fighting Sengoku, Steel Bone Kong, Blackbeard, and Blackbeard’s crew during the Marineford conflict without the age-related decline expected by the Marines. 521 522 526 528
