Background / History

Zhao Wuji serves as the examiner for the fourth trial of Shrek Academy's entrance examination. During Tang Si, Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing, and Ning Rongrong's test, he initially underestimates the four Great Soul Masters and nearly loses face before them. He responds by unleashing his soul power and activating Martial Soul Possession. 46

When Tang Si reveals two purple soul rings and attacks with the Blue Silver Emperor's Plucking Flowers, Flying Leaves, Zhao Wuji is forced back and must use a soul skill to avoid injury. Rather than becoming angered, he praises Tang Si and becomes more enthusiastic about the fight. 46

He ultimately ends the examination early after Tang Si's performance, passing Tang Si, Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing, and Ning Rongrong. 47

Later, Zhao Wuji intervenes when Canghui Academy's Soul King Ye Zhiqiu confronts the Shrek group, sending Ye Zhiqiu flying. 71 He accompanies the students during their soul-ring hunt, disputes possession of a Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent with Chao Tianxiang, and later travels alongside her and Meng Shu to assist the Shrek students in obtaining third soul rings. 73 76

Although Tang Si initially yields the Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent to prevent Meng Yiran from being injured, Chao Tianxiang acknowledges Tang Si's superior position in the contest and ultimately grants the soul beast to Shrek's side. Zhao Wuji accepts the amicable resolution and helps guard Meng Yiran while she absorbs the soul ring. 75 76

During the Titan Giant Ape's attack, Zhao Wuji shields his students but cannot stop the hundred-thousand-year soul beast from taking Xiao Wu. He is unable to catch up afterward and feels responsible for failing to protect her. 78 79

After Tang Si becomes separated from the group while pursuing Xiao Wu, Zhao Wuji finds him near the region of ten-thousand-year soul beasts and urges him to return to safety. Though concerned by Tang Si's decision to absorb a 6,755-year Sky Blue Vine as his third soul ring, Zhao Wuji agrees to support him and asks Meng Shu to help stop the absorption if it becomes dangerous. 82

Following the hunt, Flender assigns Tang Si to cultivate under Zhao Wuji, and Xiao Wu chooses to train under him as well. Zhao Wuji later uses a gravity field and sparring to assist Tang Si, Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing, and Meng Yiran's training. 90 138
