Background / History
Tang San lived in Holy Soul Village with his father, Tang Hao, and trained the Mysterious Heaven Skill on the back mountain. Before his martial soul awakening, he hoped a martial soul might let him improve his family's circumstances. Unbeknownst to him, Ji Yuan attached a parasitic spore to him and began feeding on his inner force. 1
At his awakening, Tang San manifested Blue Silver Grass and innate full soul power. His concealed second martial soul, the Clear Sky Hammer, was parasitized by Ji Yuan, causing pain in his left hand. Tang Hao recognized the danger of exposing the hammer and ordered Tang San to keep it secret. 2
Old Jack secured him Holy Soul Village's work-study place at Notting Academy. At the academy gate, Ji Yuan briefly seized Tang San's body and injured a guard; Tang San returned to awareness with no explanation for what his body had done. Yu Xiaogang accepted his enrollment and later became his teacher. 3 5
Yu Xiaogang guided Tang San toward a snake-type first soul ring to give Blue Silver Grass flexibility, poison, and control. Tang San accompanied him into Soul Hunting Forest, where they confronted a Datura Snake. Tang San fought to protect his poisoned teacher, ultimately charging into the snake's open mouth before Ji Yuan deprived him of consciousness and took control. 5 9 10
Tang San absorbed the Datura Snake's soul ring and awakened Binding, though Ji Yuan secretly filtered away most of the ring's energy and venom. Thereafter, Tang San repeatedly suffered exhaustion, black-blood vomiting, missing memories, and a sense that his strength was being stolen; Yu Xiaogang attributed these symptoms to conflict between his twin martial souls. 11 13
Following Tang Hao's unexplained departure from Holy Soul Village, Tang San returned to Notting Academy with Xiao Wu. His worsening weakness and pain in his left hand led Yu Xiaogang to recommend seeking a stronger soul ring in Star Dou Great Forest. Yu Xiaogang also instructed Tang San and Xiao Wu to enroll at Shrek Academy. 27 29 30 31
Tang San entered Shrek Academy at Rank 29 after traveling to Suotuo City with Xiao Wu. There, he encountered Dai Mubai, became acquainted with the other future Shrek Seven Monsters, and participated in Shrek's entrance assessments. Ji Yuan covertly implanted parasitic spores in Dai Mubai and began draining the origin and vitality of his White Tiger martial soul. 31 33 34
During the Star Dou Great Forest expedition, the Titan Giant Ape abducted Xiao Wu. Despite severe injuries and depleted Soul Power, Tang San pursued it alone, driving himself through repeated battles with soul beasts while Ji Yuan sustained him with stolen blood energy and manipulated his judgment. 63 64 65
To gain the strength to continue searching for Xiao Wu, Tang San killed a Man Faced Demon Spider and absorbed its two-thousand-year-or-higher soul ring. He endured the spider's lingering-soul assault through his willpower and Purple Demon Eye cultivation, while Ji Yuan secretly hollowed out most of the ring's essence. The absorption granted Tang San his third soul skill, Spider Web Restraint, and the Eight Spider Lances External Soul Bone. 68 69 70 71 72 75
After reuniting with Xiao Wu and returning to Shrek, Tang San disclosed his dangerous absorption to Yu Xiaogang. His teacher identified the Eight Spider Lances as an External Soul Bone, but continued to diagnose Tang San's recurrent blood deficiency, black-blood vomiting, and loss of control as rejection between his twin martial souls and the soul bone. Tang San accepted restrictions against actively using the Clear Sky Hammer and against excessive use of the lances. 82 83 84
Appearance
Tang San is a young boy with a notably pale complexion during periods of parasitic draining. His left hand frequently becomes heavy or painful when the hidden Clear Sky Hammer is disturbed. 2 12 13
Following his absorption of the Man Faced Demon Spider's soul ring, eight purple-black spider lances can emerge from his back. Their venomous tips and predatory aura make them visibly dangerous even to his allies. 71 73 75
- Keeps his left hand and second martial soul concealed. 2
- Carries hidden weapons in his sleeves. 3 9
- Wears the Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridge storage belt. 3 4
- Often appears bloodless, exhausted, or injured after Ji Yuan drains his power or the Eight Spider Lances lose control. 37 83 90
Personality
Tang San is diligent, restrained, and intensely determined. He studies martial soul theory seriously, works as a blacksmith to fund his own equipment, and continues fighting even when exhausted or poisoned. 5 6 9 18
He is protective of those close to him. During the Datura Snake battle, he refuses to abandon Yu Xiaogang despite being outmatched, and he confronts Xiao Chenyu rather than allow the bully to target other work-study students. 9 15
Tang San's devotion to Xiao Wu can override his usual caution. After the Titan Giant Ape takes her, he pursues it alone while severely injured, accepts the peril of an over-limit soul ring, and considers the risk worthwhile once she safely returns. 63 64 69 73
Although increasingly troubled by unexplained weakness and lost time, Tang San trusts Yu Xiaogang's diagnoses and remains unaware that Ji Yuan is parasitizing his body and manipulating his actions. 10 13 21
He also feels responsible when his new abilities harm others. After the Eight Spider Lances drain Dai Mubai's White Tiger origin, Tang San seeks to use Blue Silver Grass to compensate for the loss despite the danger to himself. 89 92
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass in his right hand and the Clear Sky Hammer in his left.
- Blue Silver Grass — initially regarded as weak, but strengthened after absorbing the Datura Snake soul ring. 2 11
- Clear Sky Hammer — concealed on Tang Hao's orders; its origin is secretly parasitized by Ji Yuan. 2
- His left hand becomes painful or heavy when the hammer's power is stirred. 2 5 13
- Tang San uses the Clear Sky Hammer in desperation during his pursuit of Xiao Wu and against the Man Faced Demon Spider. 64 68 69
- Yu Xiaogang later forbids him from actively using the hammer because of its apparent conflict with the Eight Spider Lances. 83 84
Mysterious Heaven Skill
An inner-force cultivation technique Tang San practiced before and after entering Notting Academy.
- Helps stabilize his meridians during soul-ring absorption. 11
- Supports his physical exertion, movement techniques, and blacksmithing. 9 18
- Its generated inner strength is repeatedly siphoned by Ji Yuan, causing weakness and black-blood vomiting. 13 21
- Tang San reaches the second level of the technique, but Ji Yuan intercepts ninety percent of the breakthrough's newly generated inner strength. 21
- He uses its circulation to resist the Man Faced Demon Spider's soul-ring pressure and to manage his new spider lances. 69 70 73
Binding
Tang San's first soul skill, gained from the Datura Snake's soul ring.
- Produces thickened Blue Silver Grass for restraint and control. 11
- Inflicts poisonous effects on bound targets. 11
- Its raw strength remains insufficient against stronger opponents such as Xiao Chenyu. 15
- Tang San uses it alongside hidden weapons to restrain opponents and lower-level soul beasts. 12 64
Spider Web Restraint
Tang San's third soul skill, gained from the Man Faced Demon Spider's soul ring.
- Creates a large, venomous spider web capable of binding targets and terrain. 72 82
- The web remains for a short period after activation rather than disappearing immediately. 72
- It consumes an unusually large amount of Soul Power because Ji Yuan hollowed out much of the soul ring's original essence. 71 72
Eight Spider Lances
An External Soul Bone acquired alongside Tang San's third soul ring.
- Eight purple-black lances extend from and retract into his spine. 71 73 75
- Enhance his mobility, allow him to brace or lift his body, and provide offensive and defensive reach. 73 75
- Their tips contain Man Faced Demon Spider venom and can devour blood, vitality, and Soul Power from pierced targets. 71 75 82
- The lances can react on their own and remain partly controlled by Ji Yuan through roots hidden in their bone cavities. 72 73 87
- Yu Xiaogang limits their repeated use after their devouring instinct causes them to injure and drain Dai Mubai. 83 84 89 90
Plant Affinity
A developing affinity between Tang San's Blue Silver Grass and surrounding vegetation.
- Nearby grass and trees bow or sway toward him when he releases Blue Silver Grass. 75
- He can sense and influence plants within a limited radius, including making vines move without visibly releasing his martial soul. 81 82
- He can recover a portion of his Soul Power through nearby plants, though Ji Yuan secretly intercepts most of the life force involved. 78 81
- Zhu Zhuqing suspects the plants may be reacting in fear or under bloodline suppression rather than simple affinity. 75 81
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
A movement technique used to evade and reposition during combat.
- Used against the Datura Snake while maneuvering around trees. 9
- Used to evade Zhou Ming's poisoned arrows during the academy tournament. 22
- Supports Tang San's evasive movements during hidden-weapon duels. 57
Purple Demon Eye
A cultivation and perception technique inherited from the Tang Sect.
- Tang San uses it while searching for Xiao Wu's trail through Star Dou Great Forest. 63
- He reverses its cultivation route to condense his mental power and destroy the Man Faced Demon Spider's lingering soul. 70
Hidden Weapons
Tang San uses concealed Tang Sect-style weapons, including sleeve arrows, Bone-Piercing Needles, and daggers.
- Sleeve arrows helped him fight the Datura Snake and were prepared at the academy entrance. 3 9
- Bone-Piercing Needles were aimed at the Datura Snake's eyes. 9
- He forges refined iron into materials for sleeve arrows. 20
- He employs Dragon Beard Needles, Bone-Piercing Nails, flying locust stones, and sleeve arrows against Zhao Wuji. 36
- During his battle with the Man Faced Demon Spider, he uses the Godly Zhuge Crossbow, Silent Sleeve Arrows, Willow Leaf Knives, Bone-Piercing Nails, and Flying Divine Claw. 68
- His hidden-weapon techniques allow him to defeat Meng Yiran in a formal duel and attract the attention of Dragon Duke Meng Shu. 57 59
Blacksmithing
Tang San learned forging from Tang Hao and works under Shi San in Notting City.
- Learns and practices the Disorder Splitting Wind hammer technique. 18
- Refines pig iron in thirty strikes, impressing Shi San. 18
- Forges difficult ironmother material despite severe physical strain. 20
