Background / History
Son Goku returns to Earth after Frieza, King Cold, and Kuriza have already been defeated by Tang Yangbing. He senses Tang's peaceful but terrifyingly powerful aura while approaching the planet, initially wondering whether the unknown fighter is an enemy. Rather than fearing the challenge, Goku becomes excited by the prospect of testing himself against him. 13
After meeting Tang, Goku openly admits that he is not yet a match for him, but insists on fighting anyway. He transforms into a Super Saiyan and begins a duel motivated by his desire to measure himself against a stronger opponent. 13
Goku pushes his Super Saiyan state further by combining it with Kaio-ken, ultimately reaching Tenfold Kaio-ken for one minute. Despite adapting rapidly to Tang's fighting techniques, he cannot overcome Tang's superior speed and power; Tang breaks every bone in his body before Gohan restores him with a Senzu Bean. 14 15
The defeat strengthens Goku's resolve. He chooses to train at Kami's Lookout and later enters the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, intending to challenge Tang again after improving himself. 15 16
Tang brings Goku to New Vegeta Planet to confront Broly. Goku fights in Super Saiyan form, but even his full-powered blows and Kamehameha fail to affect Broly. He persists despite the gap in strength and later witnesses Tang's Super Saiyan 2 transformation. 21 22 25
During the Android crisis, Goku and Vegeta defeat Androids 19 and 20. Later, Goku prepares for Super Cell's World Martial Arts Tournament, trains again, and battles Cell directly; although his attacks create massive shockwaves, his stamina begins failing while Cell remains apparently unaffected. 26 43 50
Personality
Goku is driven by a direct, enthusiastic love of fighting strong opponents. Even after acknowledging Tang Yangbing's overwhelming advantage, he insists on testing himself rather than retreating. 13
He learns rapidly in combat, observing and absorbing more than half of Tang's fighting techniques within minutes. His willingness to risk his body with Super Saiyan Kaio-ken reflects both his determination and his tendency to push beyond safe limits. 14
Despite being badly defeated, Goku does not become resentful. He regards Tang as an extraordinary rival, praises his mastery of Instant Transmission, and immediately commits himself to harder training. 15
