Background / History

Nick Fury’s first mission took place in 1968, when S.H.I.E.L.D. deployed him to retrieve Hydra scientist Mira Szczyg. The operation suffered severe losses after an encounter with enhanced soldiers; Fury claimed to have been the military’s sole survivor. 147

After becoming separated in the Himalayas, Fury encountered the imprisoned Makluan Makkuan. Makkuan enhanced Fury’s physical potential and slowed his aging in exchange for locating other Makluans on Earth and relaying a message to Maklu IV. Fury kept the encounter secret, suspecting that fulfilling the alien’s request could endanger Earth and, by extension, American interests. 305

As S.H.I.E.L.D. Director, Fury directed operations against S.P.E.A.R., including the severe disruption of its American intelligence network. He remained convinced that hidden S.P.E.A.R. networks survived the operation and treated the organization as a long-term strategic threat. 7 11
