Background / History
Tony Stark is one of Stark Industries' genius weapons designers. Alongside his father Howard, his work helped make the company a near-monopoly supplier of high-end weapons to the American military. When Tony shut down the company's weapons-manufacturing division, its stock price collapsed. 10
Before becoming Iron Man, Tony was a wealthy, arrogant playboy with a sincere curiosity for science. He invited Lin Hao to a banquet after checking that Lin's background was legitimate, and he took a keen interest in Will Fortson's transformations and the energy within Will's cells. 12
The Air Force asked Tony to design a flight-capable weapon system for Will. Although he mocked the initial requirements, Project Falcon inspired him to begin work immediately; he created a simple external armor for Will when Will's family was kidnapped. 12 15
Tony was later kidnapped in Afghanistan and imprisoned in a cave by terrorists seeking Jericho Missiles. Dr. Yinsen, whose family had been harmed by Stark Industries weapons, saved Tony's life and helped him escape, forcing Tony to confront the consequences of his arms dealing. 32
After defeating Obadiah Stane's Iron Monger with the aid of Adam Smith, Tony publicly revealed both his identity and his codename: Iron Man. 38
Personality
Tony is proud, competitive, sarcastic, and intensely unwilling to be overshadowed. He reveals his Iron Man identity partly because Red Swordsman had seized the reporters' attention, and he takes satisfaction in surpassing his father Howard's knowledge and achievements. 38 464
His confidence is paired with relentless scientific curiosity. When a problem interests him, he works without rest, as shown by his immediate immersion in the Air Force's armor project. 15
Tony values friendship despite his abrasive manner. He helps Rhodey secure an Army contract, builds Rhodey a personalized armor, and repeatedly works with Steve Rogers when they are displaced into unfamiliar worlds. 25 71 551 552
The increasing appearance of magical, extraterrestrial, and other extraordinary threats eventually undermines his confidence. Feeling unable to keep pace through technology alone, he falls into depression, anxiety, and alcoholism before Rhodey forces him back into action. 213 286 289

- Uses multiple armors simultaneously, including remotely controlled suits and unmanned combat armors. 289 557
- Employs optical camouflage to infiltrate guarded locations. 371
- Equips allies such as Rhodey and Steve Rogers with tailored armor. 71 446
- His armor remains vulnerable to unusual powers: Hellfire damages nano-components, while Sebastian Shaw's energy absorption directly counters armor dependent on an energy supply. 349 446
Artificial Intelligence Systems
Tony develops and relies heavily on advanced artificial intelligences, chiefly Jarvis and, in later multiversal events, Friday.
- Jarvis conducts surveillance, hacks secured systems, operates armor remotely, and provides tactical analysis. 60 103 289
- Friday manages defensive systems and nanite armor deployment in a future timeline. 446
- When rebuilding in 1992, Tony recreates Jarvis from scratch to coordinate his armor and gather intelligence; the resulting program is inhabited by an entity calling itself ONE-ABOVE-ALL. 552
Financial and Industrial Acumen
Even without his normal resources, Tony can rapidly create capital and build industrial capacity.
- Turned $200 into $20,000 on Wall Street in one week after arriving in 1992 as an ordinary mortal. 552
- Used those funds to establish an underground factory and rebuild armor technology. 552 555
- Founded the Star Foundation, which monopolized transportation between Earth and New America. 567
- Created the American New Youth Program to personally educate future American leaders. 584
