History

Eternity exists as the physical embodiment of the Marvel Multiverse: its time, space, and the collective consciousness of all life. It creates a manifestation—or “cell”—within individual universes, while the multiversal entity acts only when the multiverse itself faces a major threat. Its single-universe manifestations normally respond when their corresponding universe is endangered. 68 138

The Ancient One serves as one of Eternity’s subordinates and apostles. However, her inability to contact either the multiversal being or her universe’s individual manifestation reveals the limits of that relationship. 138 531

After Lin Hao changes the settings of the Home Base Universe, a single-universe Eternity loses its omniscience, omnipotence, and abstract nature. It gains a physical, flesh-and-blood body instead—an outcome it considers a disaster rather than a blessing. Drawn to Mars by activity around Lin Hao’s Heavenly Palace, it is trapped by a spiritual-energy formation that suppresses its spatial abilities. 253

The individual Eternity battles Lin Hao, Wu Fengji, the Myriad Heroes, Jiang Ming, Nü Yuan, and S.P.E.A.R.-empowered fighters. Jiang Ming’s Celestial Sword splits its body, while Lin Hao’s Super Saiyan Fourth Stage leaves it covered in cracks; nevertheless, it remains functional because it is bound to time, space, life, and its universe itself. 255 256

Lin Hao ultimately has the Little Devil transfer Eternity into a mysterious dimension outside the Marvel Multiverse. Cut off from its universe and multiversal connection, the individual manifestation can finally be destroyed after a prolonged battle. This defeated entity was later identified as Eternity merged with a singular Infinity. 257 258 395

The multiversal Eternity survives the loss of its cell. Alarmed by Lin Hao’s foreign powers and the destruction of one of its manifestations, it recruits Deadpool of Earth-1001 to locate the “real world” and warn Marvel’s editorial department about changes to Earth-199999. 401 402

As increasingly powerful outsiders enter the Marvel Universe, Eternity’s certainty deteriorates. The arrival of the Three Pure Ones prevents it from seeing the future, forcing it to cooperate with Death and other creator gods against a threat it cannot fully understand. 540 546 548

Eternity usually manifests as a towering black humanoid whose body contains visible galaxies and starlight. Its face is indistinct, and its voice is ethereal; in its first physical confrontation with Lin Hao, the voice is difficult to identify as male or female. 253

Personality

Eternity is initially distant, rational, and almost entirely devoid of ordinary human emotion. It views itself as responsible for maintaining cosmic sequence—the macro process of the universe’s birth, development, and eventual demise—rather than protecting the interests of particular civilizations, nations, or individuals. 138 402

This detachment makes it slow to care about crises confined to Earth. It is willing to isolate an entire Solar System to contain the Zombie Virus, judging the potential loss of one system preferable to the infection of a full universe. 414

Despite its abstract nature, Eternity gradually displays humanity: confusion when stripped of its powers, anxiety over Lin Hao’s growth, resentment toward Jonathan Hickman, fear of being reset, and concern that its accumulated humanity could be erased by a universal reboot. 253 409 518 548
