Background / History

Basil Hawkins commanded the Hawkins Pirates aboard the Grudge Dolph. When Slayer Rody's ship approached, Hawkins's crew initially believed their captain's 170 million Beli bounty made victory likely. Hawkins instead used his card-based divination and received the same outcome repeatedly: a 100% battle defeat rate, a 0% survival rate if fleeing, and a 50% survival rate if surrendering. He chose surrender. 53

Rody boarded the Grudge Dolph to examine Hawkins's abilities. After witnessing Hawkins redirect a fatal slash to a subordinate through a straw doll, Rody subjected him to a deadly card game in which each loss cost Hawkins a doll and one crew member's life. Hawkins ultimately survived and accepted Rody's order to fly his flag; the World Government subsequently revoked the bounties of Hawkins and his crew. 55 56

As Rody's subordinate, Hawkins used his knowledge and divination in several operations. He helped locate the route to Sky Island, captured a South Bird, assisted Galdino in taking Shandian prisoners, and captured former Sky Island ruler Gan Fall. 59 61 64 66

Hawkins later dealt with Eustass Kid, who sought Rody's location in hopes of challenging him. Hawkins stated with certainty that Kid had no chance against Rody, led Kid to the opera house, and afterward arranged for Kid to be carried away. 77 78 79

During the search for Zou, Hawkins traveled with Lansuo aboard the Grudge Dolph. Drought Jack captured them and brought them to Wano, where Hawkins remained composed in negotiations with Kaido. He and Lansuo were eventually freed after Kaido's defeat. 98 99 100 106

Hawkins is a tall, slender man with flowing golden hair. His face is marked by six vertical lines across his forehead and eyebrows resembling vertical slashes. 53

Personality

Hawkins is notably calm and restrained, even when confronted by overwhelming danger. His composure cracked only when his divination repeatedly predicted certain defeat and death, after which he pragmatically chose the path with the greatest chance of survival. 53
