| 143 | Gold-Gold Fruit | Nami chooses the Gold-Gold Fruit, preferring an ability suited to her love of gold over a powerful combat-oriented Devil Fruit because she relies on Rody's protection. 143 |
Background / History
Nami grew up under the oppression of Arlong and the Evil Dragon Pirates. To buy Cocoyasi Village's freedom, she became a thief who stole exclusively from pirates and worked toward collecting 100 million Beli. She concealed this burden from the village while protecting Nojiko, Genzo, and the other residents. 2 4
After witnessing Rody massacre the Great Axe Pirates, Nami accepted his offer to destroy Arlong in exchange for serving him for life. Rody removed the Arlong Pirates mark from her left shoulder, freeing her from a symbol of humiliation. 2
She accompanied Rody to Cocoyasi Village, where Arlong revealed that he had intended to have Captain Nezumi confiscate the money she had saved. Nami learned that the villagers had known the truth behind her actions from the beginning and had deliberately hidden that knowledge so they would not become a burden to her. With their support, she asked Rody for help against Arlong. 4
Following Arlong's death, Nami distributed the money she had buried in the orange grove among Cocoyasi's people. She left the village voluntarily to pursue her own dream: drawing a nautical chart of the world. 5
After traveling through the Grand Line, Nami continued developing her skills as Rody's navigator and cartographer. The crew's later vessel includes a dedicated surveying room where she draws nautical charts, as well as transplanted orange trees with automated irrigation. 50 52
During the crew's later visit to Gran Tesoro, Nami selected the Gold-Gold Fruit. She explained that she lacked interest in combat and would rather rely on Rody's protection while enjoying an ability connected to gold; in response, Rody promised to make her the Golden Queen of Gran Tesoro. 143
Appearance
Nami has short orange hair and a youthful appearance at the time she joins Rody. Her early outfit consists of a blue-and-white striped short-sleeved shirt and a short orange skirt. 2

Personality
Nami is determined, emotionally resilient, and deeply devoted to the people of Cocoyasi Village. Despite her fear of Rody's initial brutality and the fish-men's threats, she accepts a dangerous bargain to save her home. 2 3
She is strongly motivated by wealth and frequently evaluates Devil Fruits, treasure, and contracts by their Beli value. Her negotiation with Vivi raises the crew's requested payment for resolving Alabasta's crisis, although the final agreed reward is 1.5 billion Beli. 23 28 31
Her love of wealth persists even after the crew obtains the Golden City of Shandora's treasure. She eagerly considers how to transport its enormous quantity of gold, mourns the loss of Golden Lion's sunken treasure, and is particularly excited by prosperous shopping destinations such as Water 7 and Sabaody. 64 73 79 82
Though she relies heavily on Rody's protection and initially resists training, Nami recognizes the need to adapt after entering the Grand Line. She studies navigation manuals when she realizes that her East Blue experience is insufficient for Grand Line conditions. 22 25
Nami does not consider herself talented at fighting and deliberately favors a gold-related Devil Fruit over a more combat-effective option, trusting that Rody will protect her. 143
Nami also retains compassion for others. She asks Rody not to kill Marines who do not attack first, pleads for Gin's life, and supports Vivi during the journey toward Alabasta. 8 15 29
