Background / History

Rody appears on an uninhabited island after obtaining Ryomen Sukuna’s power. While testing his slashing ability and Ten Shadows summons, he decides to seek a place where he can learn, grow stronger, eat good food, and eventually challenge powerful opponents on the Grand Line. He travels by riding Nue, a monstrous bird summoned from his shadow. 1

At Watermelon Town, Rody kills Gry Dong and the Great Axe Pirates rather than accept their surrender. There he meets Nami, offers to free her from Arlong in exchange for lifelong service, and removes the Arlong Pirates’ mark from her shoulder with fire. 2 He proceeds to destroy Arlong’s crew, kill Arlong, and defeat Moo Moo, ending the fish-men’s rule over Cocoyasi Village. 3 5

His killings of Arlong’s crew and Captain Nezumi’s Marine force earn him the name “Slayer Rody” and a 50 million Beli bounty. He continues gathering companions—including Nami, butler Mike, chef Carmen, Windfire Wheel, Leo, and Jose—while destroying pirate crews that obstruct him. 7 10 11 14

After entering the Grand Line, Rody takes Baroque Works agents Shuke and Beta into his service and agrees to help Vivi overthrow Crocodile in return for 1.5 billion Beli. 25 28 He destroys Wapol and Drum Kingdom Castle with Malevolent Shrine, then defeats and kills Crocodile in Alabasta. 32 37 38

Crocodile’s defeat leads the World Government to offer Rody a position among the Seven Warlords of the Sea. He accepts after demanding a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit, then assumes control of Baroque Works, terminates the Utopia Plan, and announces his ambition to overthrow the World Government and rule the world himself. 41 44 47

After leaving Alabasta, Rody brings selected Baroque Works officers—including Daz Bones, Bon Clay, Galdino, and Marianne—onto his voyage. He subsequently kills Enel, takes control of Skypiea, defeats Golden Lion Shiki, and commissions Windfire Wheel to forge the weapons Hiten and Kamutoke. 48 63 68 73

At Sabaody Archipelago, Rody publicly attacks and kills Celestial Dragons, broadcasts their punishment to the world, defeats Admiral Kizaru, and kills Vice Admiral Garp. The World Government raises his bounty to 6 billion Beli and gives him the epithet “Godslayer.” 83 84 89 91 92

Using the Float-Float Fruit, Rody raises eighty-eight islands into the sky and establishes the Heaven Kingdom, with Sky City as its capital. He expands his forces with recruits, historical summons Lü Bu and Hattori Hanzō, former Admiral Aokiji, and numerous Devil Fruit users. 93 94 147

Rody later kills Gecko Moria, fuses the Shadow-Shadow Fruit with Chimera Shadow Garden, and launches a campaign against Kaido in Wano Country. After defeating Kaido and Orochi, he obtains the Azure Dragon and Yamata no Orochi Devil Fruits, takes control of Wano, and installs Kyoshiro as an executioner over its remaining resistance. 97 98 101 102 105 107

During his expansion, Rody raids Impel Down, confronts Blackbeard, obtains additional Devil Fruit powers, and continues building the Heaven Kingdom’s military and technology. 115 132 144 149

Rody later enters the Marvel universe, acquires the Space Stone and the Black Death Sword, and battles Carol Danvers, Ancient One, Odin, the Eternals, and Avengers. Ancient One’s soul-targeting attack and Odin’s Gungnir leave him with a severely damaged soul and heart, forcing him to retreat to the Pirate World. 155 165 169 171 172

Seeking a means to repair his soul, Rody kills Big Mom and takes the Soul-Soul Fruit. After awakening telekinesis through a World Energy Crystal, he creates three bodies from his own fingers and sends them into weaker worlds to gather special souls and power. 173 175

One pink-haired body enters Waterblue Star’s South Korea, where Rody becomes known as the Flame Emperor, destroys Incheon, extracts the souls of exceptional individuals, and seeks further routes into other worlds. 175 182 190 He later awakens in the Northern Mountain Demon Kingdom with apparent memory loss and identifies himself as Xuan Ming. 191

Appearance

Rody is a tall red-haired man, roughly 2.3 meters in height, with unusual markings across his face and body. 6 7

Personality

Rody values freedom above formal identities. He explicitly rejects being defined as a Marine, pirate, or bounty hunter, instead describing himself as someone who kills and saves according to his own will. 2 He has little patience for weakness, arrogance, or people he considers uninteresting, and routinely kills enemies who surrender or threaten him. 2 7 19

Despite his brutality, Rody shows selective restraint and attachment. He agrees not to initiate violence against Marines who do not attack him, spares Smoker so that he can grow stronger, and protects companions such as Nami, Vivi, Robin, and his crew. 8 21 40 48 He also has a strong interest in delicious food, unusual people, historical places, Devil Fruits, and powerful opponents. 2 10 44 49

Rody is intensely possessive of people he considers his own and equates protection and exclusive ownership with his understanding of love. He reflects on his feelings toward Nami, Vivi, and Robin but later concludes that he may lack conventional emotional attachment, regarding most of his relationships primarily through desire and possession. 11 51 52 185

His ambition grows from seeking strong opponents into open world conquest. He refuses Kaido’s offer of alliance because he does not acknowledge equals, establishes the Heaven Kingdom, and repeatedly declares his intention to rule worlds through overwhelming strength. 47 94 104 169
