Background / History
Hanzō led the Hidden Rain Village, the weakest faction in the Land of Rain conflict, while the Hidden Leaf, Hidden Stone, and Hidden Sand fought across the region. His strategy was to mediate among stronger villages and extract benefits for the Hidden Rain Village 39.
Ten years before his battlefield speech, he unified the Hidden Rain Village. Three years before that battle, he defeated the Land of Iron and seized land, wealth, and women, achievements that helped sustain his reputation as the village’s “Demigod” 40.
During the war, Hanzō relied heavily on salamander poison as Hidden Rain’s main advantage. Chiyo of the Hidden Sand had previously neutralized it and exposed its weakness, and when Hidden Sand was later driven out of the Land of Rain by Hidden Leaf, Hanzō recognized the widening gap between his village and Konoha 39.
After learning that Hidden Leaf’s forces were gaining freedom to redeploy, Hanzō decided to personally enter the battlefield. He gave logistics and dispatching duties to trusted guards before heading out 39.
Before the decisive clash, Hanzō rallied his troops with a speech insisting that the advantage remained with Hidden Rain as long as he, the Demigod, was present. The speech successfully restored morale among dispirited Rain ninja, though Hanzō himself understood the village’s raw-strength disadvantage 40 41.
Hanzō led a surprise attack intended to strike the Hidden Leaf camp before Tsunade could crack salamander poison. By coincidence, his force encountered Jiraiya and Tsunade’s own surprise-attack unit midway, forcing both sides into an unexpected confrontation 41.
Appearance
Hanzō is specifically noted wearing a respirator mask during battlefield operations, matching his poison-centered fighting style 41.
- Wears a breathing/respirator mask in combat 41.
- Carries a scythe connected to a chain 41 43.
- Possesses a salamander poison sac transplanted into his body from childhood, granting unusually high poison resistance 43.
Personality
Hanzō is pragmatic and politically aware. Even while raising morale with grand declarations, he privately knows Hidden Rain cannot match Hidden Leaf’s overall strength and seeks bargaining chips rather than certain victory 41.
He is ambitious but not reckless in his own estimation. After realizing that starting a territorial war may have been a mistake, he does not regret the decision; he simply reassesses the situation and personally takes the field 39.
In battle, he is ruthless and willing to sacrifice both enemies and allies. When his forces are nearly wiped out, he chooses mutual destruction over allowing Hidden Leaf a clean victory, releasing poison mist dense enough to drop even remaining Rain ninja despite their masks 42.
After Qiao Luo splits him with the Tiger Talisman, his evil half becomes openly arrogant, vicious, and delusional, declaring that the great nations will submit beneath him. His good half is polite and kind-hearted, but still refuses to surrender his life willingly 43.
Abilities & Skills
Salamander Poison
Hanzō’s signature advantage is poison associated with Salamander Ibuse and his own body. Hidden Leaf’s difficulty against Hidden Rain is attributed largely to salamander poison until Tsunade and Qiao Luo produce an antidote 39 40.
- Uses Salamander Ibuse to emit large-scale purple poison mist 41.
- Can exhale thick poison mist himself after removing his mask 42.
- Can overlap his own poison mist with Ibuse’s, creating a haze so concentrated it nearly liquefies 42.
- Has high poison resistance due to a transplanted salamander poison sac from childhood 43.
- His poison can numb skin and stiffen movement even after antidotes are taken; antidotes only hold for about ten minutes under sustained exposure 41.
Summoning: Salamander Ibuse
Hanzō summons Salamander Ibuse, a house-sized salamander that functions as both mount and battlefield weapon 41.
- Releases poisonous mist from its mouth 41.
- Can burrow underground, avoiding restraint from Jiraiya’s swamp technique 41.
- Bursts from below to disrupt coordinated attacks, knocking away Nara Shikaya and Yamanaka Yūichi 41.
- Is strong enough to serve as Hanzō’s platform during poison-mist deployment 42.
Swordsmanship and Scythe Combat
Hanzō is an expert close-quarters fighter. Qiao Luo later absorbs his chakra and gains a vast body of swordsmanship knowledge, noting that Hanzō’s title likely came from combining poison with exquisite swordsmanship and ninjutsu 44.
- Blocks Tsunade’s stone barrage with his scythe 41.
- Uses a chain-linked scythe to defend, attack, and counter weapon ambushes 41 43.
- Cuts through Jiraiya’s hardened hair during close combat 41.
- Is eventually outmatched in swordsmanship by Qiao Luo 43.
Ninjutsu
Hanzō uses multiple elemental and tactical ninjutsu, including Wind, Fire, and Water techniques 41 43.
- Wind Release: Gale Palm — pushes Ibuse’s poison mist forward to engulf Hidden Leaf forces 41.
- Fire Release: Explosive Flame Array — remotely controls explosive tags that crawl onto enemies before detonating 41 43.
- Water Body Flicker Technique — turns into water to escape lethal blade strikes 43.
- Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique — used by his evil half with simplified hand seals, forming a poison-infused water dragon 43.
Battlefield Command
Hanzō is a capable battlefield commander who understands morale, terrain, and political consequences 39 41.
- Raises Rain ninja morale through a public speech centered on his “Demigod” reputation 40.
- Chooses a remote route to avoid Hidden Leaf detection during a surprise attack 41.
- Plans the attack to gain bargaining chips even if Hidden Rain ultimately loses 41.
- Recognizes mid-battle that although he personally has not lost, Hidden Rain Village has 42.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Respirator mask — worn during battle to operate around poison mist 41.
- Scythe and chain — primary melee weapon, used for cutting, blocking, and countering ambushes 41 43.
- Explosive tags — planted through his feet and remotely activated with Fire Release: Explosive Flame Array 41 43.
Relationships
- Salamander Ibuse — summoned beast; central to Hanzō’s poison tactics and battlefield mobility 41 42 43.
- Kurokawa Mizu — personal guard and the only elite jonin among the Rain ninja force; Hanzō reacts angrily when Qiao Luo kills him 42.
- Tsunade — enemy commander and medical ninja who helps crack salamander poison; later fights Hanzō and is credited in rumors with helping kill him 39 41 44 66.
- Jiraiya — enemy combatant who faces Hanzō alongside Tsunade and the Ino-Shika-Cho trio 41 43.
- Qiao Luo — enemy Uchiha who resists his poison, splits him into good and evil halves, secretly kills his good half, and absorbs his chakra through Demon Blade Hirumaru 43 44.
- Hidden Rain ninja — subordinates whose morale depends heavily on Hanzō’s presence and “Demigod” reputation 40 41.
- Chiyo — Hidden Sand expert who previously neutralized salamander poison and exposed its weakness, putting Hidden Rain in difficulty 39.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Hidden Rain Reassessment
After Hidden Sand is driven out of the Land of Rain, Hanzō realizes the balance of the battlefield has shifted. Seeing that Hidden Leaf defeated the same village that had once pressured Hidden Rain, he decides to personally join the battle 39.
Surprise Attack on Hidden Leaf
Hanzō rallies the Rain ninja, privately aware that Hidden Rain is outmatched but determined to protect the village and secure leverage. His surprise attack unexpectedly collides with Jiraiya and Tsunade’s own offensive force 40 41.
Battle Against Hidden Leaf Elites
Hanzō opens with Salamander Ibuse’s poison mist and Wind Release support, forcing the Hidden Leaf troops into a dangerous poisoned battlefield. He withstands pressure from Jiraiya, Tsunade, and the Ino-Shika-Cho trio, using Ibuse and explosive tags to reverse the battle situation 41.
Mutual Destruction Attempt
When Qiao Luo and Mikoto devastate the Rain ninja forces, Hanzō recognizes that Hidden Rain has lost even though he personally remains dangerous. He releases overlapping poison mist from both Ibuse and himself, intending to kill Hidden Leaf elites at the cost of his own side 42.
Defeat and Death
Qiao Luo confronts Hanzō inside the poison fog, overpowering him with superior strength, weapon control, poison-coated blades, talismans, and the Tiger Talisman’s Yin-Yang Separation. Qiao Luo secretly kills Hanzō’s good half and absorbs his chakra, while the restored original body dies shortly afterward in front of Tsunade and Jiraiya, leaving them uncertain about the exact cause 43 44.
Fall of Hidden Rain Village
After Hanzō’s death is confirmed and his corpse displayed, Hidden Leaf launches a full-scale assault. With Hidden Rain’s elite forces already deployed and its leader dead, the village falls in less than half an hour 44.
