The three Kobolds listened blankly to young master Haya's account. Beside them, Aisijin lowered the large double-edged axe she had kept raised. It had been newly purchased for her in Black Horn City. While Big Silly Hum held young master Haya's hand down, she had remained ready to bring the axe down the moment he broke free. She was quite pleased with this long-handled battle-axe Ruger had recently given her, especially its weight.
"Since you asked about that book, I thought... these things that might have something to do with my mother might also be helpful..."
Haya glanced at the scratch-covered tabletop as he spoke softly.
Ruger thought back over what he knew about Haya.
"Young master Haya, you... are Sir Wagleng's youngest son?"
As Ruger listened to his account, he kept feeling that something was not quite right.
Haya paused in surprise.
"Yes, I'm Father's youngest child, and his only child," Haya said slowly. "Mother was always frail. Father spent years gathering a large sum of sun coins to offer to the temple, and received a potion as a reward. It finally allowed Mother to live like an ordinary person without constantly falling ill. But they never had a child of their own, which was always a regret for both of them. Some years later, to carry on the family line, I gained my two older brothers. Father adopted them both, and they're still helping him manage the fleet..."
The room was quiet.
Listening to Haya's account, Ruger nodded despite himself. It explained the inconsistency he had noticed earlier, but he still felt something was missing.
"The god your mother worshipped..." Ruger began slowly.
"Was the Twin God. Everyone in the family said Mother was the Twin God's most devout believer," Haya said with certainty.
Ruger nodded.
