Government and Military
- Decentralized authority: Power was divided among the imperial family, regional kingdoms and duchies, and separate military commands. Mo Lin considered this an obstacle to taking control of the empire through its throne alone 305 451 454.
- Imperial military: Ge Long, the empire's foremost military figure, could mobilize more than 100,000 troops without Xue Ye's permission 282.
- Royal forces: The imperial family commanded soul masters in Heaven Dou City, including Elder Ming, whom Xue Ye dispatched to protect his heir 277. Qian Renxue later controlled the royal soul masters and part of the capital's military, but not the armies across the empire 451.
- Treasury: The Vast Sea Cosmic Shroud was kept in the empire's treasure vault before Mo Lin obtained it 216.
History
The Clear Sky Sect conflict
The Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan's attendance at a tournament in Heaven Dou City was taken by Xue Ye as a gesture of support, although the clan had not formally sided with the empire 43 45 131. Relations later deteriorated: a clan-affiliated Titled Douluo defeated a Titled Douluo serving the imperial family, and Heaven Dou mobilized troops during the clan's conflict with the Clear Sky Sect 278 284.
Xue Ye personally directed an operation involving Ge Long's army, intending to exploit the clash between the two sects 282 302. Mo Lin's attack cost the empire Ge Long and more than 100,000 soldiers, leaving it struggling to replace both its commander and its troops 297 303. The empire omitted its army's operations from its public account of the Clear Sky Sect's destruction 303.
Succession crisis and civil war
Qian Renxue spent years impersonating Crown Prince Xue Qinghe as part of Spirit Hall's plan to seize the empire 45 226 454. After Xue Ye died, Prince Xue Xing challenged the succession and declared himself emperor. Both his faction and the crown prince's faction claimed to be the legitimate Heaven Dou government and declared war 445 451 508.
Qian Renxue's control extended chiefly to the capital's royal soul masters and part of its military. When the empire split, her territory was less than one-third the size of Xue Xing's; kingdoms and duchies already under Spirit Hall's influence supported her claim 451.
Collapse
A campaign against evil soul masters exposed officials' connections to them. In the divided Heaven Dou Empire, public anger brought tax resistance and severely damaged confidence in its rulers 550. The Xue Qinghe faction then disclosed the former government's concealed role in the Clear Sky Sect affair, further destroying the imperial family's reputation 576 577.
Grace Hall sent an army under Yu Yuanzhen, Yu Tianxin, and Yu Tianheng to annex the empire 577. Its troops took over barracks and defenses in most cities with little resistance, assuming the former military's duties rather than disrupting daily life 579. Xue Xing gathered imperial relatives and approximately 200,000 soldiers in one city, but shortages and internal strife ended their resistance within half a year 579 582. Mo Lin subsequently occupied the remaining territory, appointed officials to cities lacking them, and unified the continent as the Douluo Republic 582.
