Background / History
Mao Shaohui leads four state-affiliated espers confronting Hong Mo and Mu Siyu outside the police station. Publicly, he offers to overlook their offenses if they join the state; privately, he has been ordered to arrange their deaths. His family's interests, particularly his stepmother's desire for revenge, are behind the plan against Mu Siyu 7 8.
After Hong Mo kills Lei Ao, Mao Shaohui treats him as an enemy of the state and attempts to pressure him into submission. When Mu Siyu identifies the recruitment proposal as a trap, Mao Shaohui's reaction confirms her suspicion 8.
During the ensuing battle, Mao Shaohui nearly kills Hong Mo with a kinetically empowered golden bullet. Hong Mo instead wounds him catastrophically, tearing open his chest and damaging his heart. Fu Xunhong keeps him alive through direct blood control while Shasha and Fu Xunhong cover his retreat 9 10 11.
Four years later, Mao Shaohui reveals that he monitored Hong Mo even after Hong Mo was presumed dead and planted a trusted subordinate in the Northern Institute Research Center. After Hong Mo is captured, Mao Shaohui visits him at a more secretive facility, intending to extract all possible research value from him before having him completely destroyed 21 29.
Appearance
Mao Shaohui is a bespectacled man who presents himself with the composure and confidence of a privileged political heir.
- Wears glasses, which he pushes up during his confrontation with Hong Mo 8.
- Uses a pair of identical golden handguns in combat 9 10.
- Is described as a “capital princeling” by Fu Xunhong and Hong Mo's narration 11.
Personality
Mao Shaohui is calculated, arrogant, and intensely concerned with his own survival. He initially speaks in the language of law, society, and state service, but his recruitment operation is a cover for a personal and family-driven execution order 8.
He is confident enough to explain the operating principle of Kinetic Empowerment to Hong Mo during combat. This confidence breaks when Hong Mo continues attacking despite severe injuries; confronted by an opponent willing to sacrifice his own body for a kill, Mao Shaohui panics and begs Fu Xunhong to save him 10 11.
His later treatment of Hong Mo reveals cruelty and obsession. He views Hong Mo as both a source of amusement and a valuable experimental resource, promising to kill him only after his usefulness is exhausted 29.
Abilities & Skills
Kinetic Empowerment
Mao Shaohui can convert his own bodily energy into kinetic energy and add it to objects he touches. He most often applies it to bullets, turning ordinary firearm shots into devastating attacks 10.
- Empowers bullets with enough force to destroy Hong Mo's Sand Iron Sword and nearly pierce his glabella 9.
- Can enhance physical attacks beyond bullets; a lightly kicked rock flies away at extreme speed and explodes against a wall 10.
- Can empower himself for short, sudden repositioning movements resembling teleportation 11.
- His self-empowered movement covers only about one meter at a time 11.
Firearms and Gun-Fu
Mao Shaohui specially trained in firearms and gun-fu to maximize the lethality of Kinetic Empowerment 10.
- Uses handguns as delivery systems for kinetically empowered ammunition 9 10.
- Fires accurately enough to strike Hong Mo repeatedly while Hong Mo moves at superhuman speed 10.
- Carries a second handgun to continue firing after losing control of the first 10.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Golden handguns — A matched pair used to fire kinetically empowered bullets 9 10.
- Golden bullets — Projectiles strengthened through Kinetic Empowerment; one nearly kills Hong Mo after penetrating the Sand Iron Sword 9.
Relationships
- Hong Mo — Primary enemy. Mao Shaohui leads the operation intended to recruit or kill him, nearly kills him in battle, and later has him used as an experimental subject 7 10 29.
- Mu Siyu — Target of Mao Shaohui's covert execution plan; he tries to use her younger sister as leverage to force her cooperation 8 12.
- Fu Xunhong — Subordinate or allied esper who preserves Mao Shaohui's life through blood control and assists his retreat, despite personally disliking him 11.
- Shasha — Allied earth-controller who shields Mao Shaohui's retreat under Fu Xunhong's direction 11.
- Mao Shaohui's stepmother — Family member whose son died; she presses for Mu Siyu to be killed 8.

Battle with Hong Mo
He acts as Hong Mo's most dangerous opponent in the police-station battle, using empowered handgun fire and short-range kinetic movement. Hong Mo maims him severely, but Fu Xunhong prevents him from dying and enables his escape 9 10 11.
Hong Mo's Captivity
After Hong Mo resurfaces four years later, Mao Shaohui's prior surveillance and infiltration of the Northern Institute contribute to Hong Mo's capture. He personally confirms his intent to exploit Hong Mo for research until nothing useful remains 29.
