Background / History

Mu En's spine was shattered in the past. He survived and broke through to Ultimate Douluo with the aid of a Dragon Pill, but its concealed violent aura continually eroded his body and lifespan. Although he entered semi-retirement, he retained unquestioned authority within the Sea God Pavilion and Shrek Academy. Without fighting at full strength, he estimated that he had roughly fifteen years left to live. 27 50

His past decisions remain a source of regret. Mu En saved Zhang Lexuan after her family was destroyed, but bound her future to Shrek Academy through a Martial Soul Oath and arranged for her to become Bei Bei's child bride. He later came to believe that this decision had confined her to a life she did not choose. 27 28 31

Mu En also worries over Shrek Academy's succession. He considers neither Xuan Zi nor his own disciple Yan Shaozhe fully suitable to inherit the Sea God Pavilion, while Zhang Lexuan still requires time to reach the necessary cultivation. 27

Mu En usually presents himself as a frail, elderly man resting in a recliner outside Shrek Academy's freshman dormitory. His unassuming appearance conceals his status as one of humanity's three Ultimate Douluo. 11 50

His kindness toward younger people is tempered by regret. He is protective of Zhang Lexuan and willing to stabilize her condition despite his own failing health, yet he openly blames himself for the constraints his past choices placed on her life. 27

As Shrek Academy's master, Mu En can also be uncompromising. After Yan Shaozhe's actions aggravate his condition, Mu En removes him as dean, strips him of his status as the next-generation Sea God Pavilion heir, and begins institutional reforms centered on the Soul Tool Department. 52

Discovery of Jiang Yue

Mu En first encounters Jiang Yue while posing as the elderly attendant outside the freshman dormitory building. He gives Jiang Yue directions to Dormitory 208 and is surprised by the unusual affinity he senses from him. 11

Later, after seeing Jiang Yue practice the Distraction Control Technique, Mu En identifies him as a rare genius nearing Rank 38 at only eleven years old. He guides Jiang Yue into the Three Apertures Heart stage and begins considering him as a possible final disciple. 27

Tournament Reserve Team Recruitment

After Jiang Yue returns from vacation with greatly improved spiritual power, Mu En praises his foundation and invites him to join Shrek Academy's reserve team for the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Dueling Tournament. 49

Jiang Yue initially declines because of his age and the usual eligibility requirements. Mu En responds by opening the selection process to second-year core disciples, determined to give Jiang Yue a chance to compete. 50

Conflict with Yan Shaozhe and Academy Reform

Yan Shaozhe mistakenly concludes that Mu En helped Jiang Yue obtain his ten-thousand-year fourth soul ring and asks whether Mu En accepted Jiang Yue as a disciple. The implication that Yan Shaozhe had again mishandled Jiang Yue devastates Mu En emotionally and seriously worsens his health. 51 52

At the ensuing Sea God Pavilion meeting, Mu En removes Yan Shaozhe as dean of the Martial Soul Department, appoints Cai Meier as acting dean and Zhang Lexuan as acting vice dean, and orders Shrek Academy to prioritize development of the Soul Tool Department in response to the Sun Moon Empire's technological advantage. 52
