Background / History

Mu En's spine was shattered in the past. He survived and broke through to Ultimate Douluo with the aid of a Dragon Pill, but its concealed violent aura continually eroded his body and lifespan. Although he entered semi-retirement, he retained unquestioned authority within the Sea God Pavilion and Shrek Academy. Without fighting at full strength, he estimated that he had roughly fifteen years left to live. 27 50

The injury occurred during a fierce battle with Du Bisou of the Body Sect. Du Bisou died afterward, while Mu En disappeared from public view. Much of the continent, including Du Busi and Zhongli Wu, consequently believed that both combatants had perished. Although Mu En survived by refining the Dragon Pill, the resulting damage made him the weakest in actual combat among the three human Ultimate Douluo. His talent had originally been sufficient to reach that realm without such assistance. 119 125

Shrek Academy's resources played an important role in his early cultivation. A high-quality head soul bone strengthened his spiritual power enough to absorb a ten-thousand-year fourth soul ring. Before obtaining his seventh ring, the academy helped him acquire two additional soul bones, including a torso bone, and hunt a hundred-thousand-year soul beast. Mu En and Long Xiaoyao were close friends and evenly matched rivals in their youth. They searched for a God's Inheritance but never obtained one. After reaching Ultimate Douluo, Mu En vaguely sensed a barrier above the continent, which helped convince him that god-level power was not merely a legend. 121 128

His relationship with Ye Xishui left lasting emotional wounds. Mu En loved her and had performed wedding rites with her, but seeing her together with Long Xiaoyao on his wedding night shattered his relationships with both his beloved and his closest friend. He later suspected that the circumstances had been too coincidental, but lacked the evidence needed to establish the truth. The Holy Spirit Cult had deliberately used its Holy Maiden to drive a wedge between the two men, whose strength threatened the cult. 127 128

His past decisions remain a source of regret. Mu En also worried over Shrek Academy's succession. He considered neither Xuan Zi nor his own disciple Yan Shaozhe fully suitable to inherit the Sea God Pavilion, while Zhang Lexuan still required time to reach the necessary cultivation. 27

The Holy Spirit Cult's attack ultimately exhausted most of his remaining vitality. After saving the academy, he chose to merge his soul with the Golden Tree, hoping to preserve a measure of consciousness and protect Shrek for approximately another century. He accepted that his soul would eventually become nourishment for the tree and rejected uncertain hopes of reincarnation in favor of safeguarding the academy's immediate future. 127 128

His kindness toward younger people is tempered by regret. He is protective of Zhang Lexuan and willing to stabilize her condition despite his own failing health, yet he openly blames himself for the constraints his past choices placed on her life. 27

As Shrek Academy's master, Mu En can also be uncompromising. After Yan Shaozhe's actions aggravate his condition, Mu En removes him as dean, strips him of his status as the next-generation Sea God Pavilion heir, and begins institutional reforms centered on the Soul Tool Department. 52

His later decisions increasingly reject the academy's fixation on prestige. After a disastrous student mission, he responds with calm disappointment rather than an uncontrolled outburst, demands institutional accountability, and argues that Shrek's strength rests on the soul masters it produces rather than an uninterrupted tournament championship record. He is willing to risk defeat if genuine competition helps younger students mature and exposes the academy's weaknesses. 66 88

Tournament Reserve Team Recruitment

After Jiang Yue returns from vacation with greatly improved spiritual power, Mu En praises his foundation and invites him to join Shrek Academy's reserve team for the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Dueling Tournament. 49

Jiang Yue initially declines because of his age and the usual eligibility requirements. Mu En responds by opening the selection process to second-year core disciples, determined to give Jiang Yue a chance to compete. 50

When Zhongli Wu launches an attack that threatens the academy, its students, and the Golden Tree, Sea God's Light erupts across Shrek Academy and Shrek City. The light erases the attack, suppresses the invaders, and heals the wounded, revealing that Mu En is still alive. 126 127

Mu En remains concealed within the Sea God Pavilion while confronting Zhongli Wu. Recognizing the Death God Demon Puppet as a mutation of Ye Xishui's martial soul, he identifies Zhongli Wu as her son and offers to let the invaders leave if they return Ma Xiaotao. Zhongli Wu refuses and threatens to have his subordinates self-destruct throughout the academy. 127

Mu En rescues Yan Shaozhe, restrains Zhongli Wu, and neutralizes the attackers' explosions. He nevertheless allows Zhongli Wu to escape because killing him might provoke Ye Xishui.
