Background

Following the holy war four thousand years earlier, Shrek Academy became independent and ceased to belong to any empire. Shrek City consequently does not pay taxes to the surrounding nations, functioning in practice as a “nation within a nation.” 5

The academy is regarded as a holy land of soul masters and has accumulated extensive soul master knowledge across its ten-thousand-year history. It attracts talented students from throughout the continent, while its Outer Court also serves as a place for major clans and factions to meet and recruit young talent. 9 11

Its independence is closely connected to the threat posed by the Sun Moon Empire. The original three Douluo empires regard Shrek as their first and strongest defensive line in a future continental war, giving them a continuing reason to tolerate its autonomous government and territorial independence. Even after its tournament defeat, the academy’s political importance and established foundations protect it from immediate decline. 124 165

Shrek also actively promotes the legends of the original Shrek Seven Monsters and their ascension to godhood. Niu Tian identifies it as Tang San’s most important remaining source of faith after the Tang Sect’s decline and the Clear Sky Sect’s withdrawal from public life. 130 152

Campus and Organization

Shrek Academy and Shrek City occupy an enormous area on the Lima Plains. The eastern gate of Shrek City also serves as the academy entrance; during enrollment season, prospective students and their accompanying families crowd the admissions area. 5 11

Outer Court

The Outer Court accepts standard applicants under twelve years old with at least Rank 15 soul power and a city lord-level letter of recommendation. Applicants also pay ten gold soul coins in tuition upon registration. 4 5 11

Inner Court students wear red uniforms, representing a hundred-thousand-year soul ring. Sea God Pavilion stands at the academy’s highest level of authority; Mu En serves as its master until his death, while Xuan Zi is identified as its heir. 24 31 50 129

The academy maintains a dedicated inspection corps and intelligence network for pursuing evil soul masters. Jiang Yue nevertheless refuses to entrust his revenge investigation to it, citing his distrust of the academy and questioning whether its network can adequately cover the three great empires. 52

During the Holy Spirit Cult’s attack, twenty Sea God Pavilion elders of at least Titled Douluo rank assemble to defend the academy. Xuan Zi and the Rank 97 Song Yunzhi are among its leading active defenders, while the injured Mu En remains its hidden Limit Douluo protector. 124 125 127

Leadership Reforms

After Yan Shaozhe’s actions aggravate Mu En’s injuries, Mu En convenes a Sea God Pavilion meeting and strips him of his positions. Cai Meier and Zhang Lexuan receive greater responsibility, and Zhang Lexuan becomes vice dean of the Martial Soul Department. Mu En also asks Lin Huiqun to oversee Outer Court teachers and remove problematic educators. 52 53

Mu En orders vigorous development of the Soul Tool Department, warning that the academy’s assumption of martial soul supremacy leaves it dangerously unprepared for the Sun Moon Empire’s technological progress. He reports that some Sun Moon soul tools threaten even him and emphasizes that Shrek would be among the empire’s first targets in another war. 52

Following the tournament mission disaster, Mu En rejects the idea that an uninterrupted championship record is the basis of Shrek’s strength. He instead prioritizes accountability, training younger students, and cooperation between the Martial Soul and Soul Tool Departments. 66

Tournament Teams

Shrek’s tournament representatives are divided into a Main Team and a Reserve Team. Reserve selection takes place while the Main Team prepares for the approaching Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Dueling Tournament; many representatives later advance from the Reserve Team to the Main Team. 49 50

• Before Mu En’s intervention, reserve selection generally targets core disciples from the third year onward, usually aged fourteen or fifteen. Mu En extends eligibility to second-year core disciples in an attempt to include Jiang Yue. 49 50

Soul Master Knowledge and Soul Tools

Shrek’s accumulated expertise extends to rare martial souls, soul beast husbandry, and ultimate-attribute cultivation. The Beast Battle Area’s enclosures depend on substantial financial investment and generations of research into soul beast habits. 12 16 50

The academy has previously produced ultimate fire, ultimate wind, and ultimate wood soul masters, giving it cultivation knowledge considered highly confidential elsewhere on the continent. Meng Hongchen’s ultimate-ice evolution briefly leads Jing Hongchen to consider accepting an exchange with Shrek to obtain this expertise. 172 173

Its soul tool development nevertheless lags substantially behind the Sun Moon Empire. Some elders continue to dismiss Sun Moon technology even though Shrek cannot manufacture certain lower-grade fixed soul tool cannon shells. Mu En identifies this attitude as a strategic danger and repeatedly urges technological development. 52 88

Golden Tree and Sea God’s Light

When Zhongli Wu launches a broad attack against the academy, the Golden Tree releases Sea God’s Light across both Shrek Academy and Shrek City. The radiance erases his blade attacks, suppresses evil soul masters, and rapidly heals injured people who are not evil soul masters. Mu En subsequently neutralizes the attackers’ attempted self-detonations by turning their explosions into harmless golden light. 126 127

Past generations of Shrek Limit Douluos can preserve their lifetime soul power and part of their souls within the Golden Tree. This symbiotic arrangement can last approximately a century, after which their souls are gradually absorbed as nourishment. Mu En chooses this course to continue protecting Shrek after his death, accepting the loss of any possible reincarnation. 128

Tournament Disaster and Defeat

The tournament Main Team suffers catastrophic losses during a mission against an evil soul master using Corpse Explosion. Yao Haoxuan dies; three Main Team members are severely injured, two are lightly injured, and only Ye Xiaosheng remains unharmed. Reserve member Dai Huabin also suffers critical physical and mental injuries. Dai Yaoheng prevents further destruction by destroying Yao Haoxuan’s corpse before it can be used as another explosive medium. 65

Xuan Zi returns the most seriously injured students to Shrek for treatment and reports the disaster at an emergency Sea God Pavilion meeting. Mu En holds the academy responsible, orders Xuan Zi to apologize personally to the victims’ families and arrange compensation, and rejects requests to send Inner Court student reinforcements merely to preserve the championship record. 65 66

Zhuang Lao restores the remaining injured competitors, allowing Dai Yaoheng to lead decisive victories through the early rounds, including the elimination of Justsky Academy. With two Soul Emperors, one Soul King, and several Soul Ancestors, the reduced team regains confidence and eventually narrowly defeats Star Luo Imperial Academy to reach the final. 69 70 72

In the final against Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy, Bei Bei and Xu Sanshi’s sudden bursts of strength salvage a draw in the team battle. Meng Hongchen dominates several individual encounters before Dai Yaoheng defeats her and collapses from poison. The decisive confrontation ends when Xiao and Meng Hongchen’s Red Dust’s Longing overwhelms Dai Yaoheng and Zhu Lu’s Hell White Tiger, leaving Shrek in second place. 72

The result ends Shrek’s long-standing tournament dominance and provokes widespread public criticism. The academy and its remaining Main Team members receive most of the blame, while the Reserve Team initially avoids the worst backlash. Ning Tian fears damage to her own standing and to the Nine Treasure Glazed Tile Sect’s relationship with Shrek; Jiang Yue, observing from Heaven Dou City, suspects hostile factions are deliberately amplifying the controversy. 72

Failed Exchange and Post-Tournament Reform

At Mu En’s request, Shrek proposes an exchange program with Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy. Jing Hongchen’s insulting refusal angers the elders and deepens hostility between the institutions. Mu En acknowledges Shrek’s technological disadvantage, rejects attempts to scapegoat the Reserve Team, and reorganizes it for the next tournament. 88

Zhang Lexuan reports that Dai Yaoheng and Zhu Lu have formed a martial soul fusion skill and intend to leave together after graduation. Dai Huabin’s injuries, worsening behavior, and loss of prospects become further concerns. Mu En also authorizes Tang Ya’s withdrawal if she remains determined to leave. 88

Despite the tournament backlash, Shrek continues to attract students and retains the support of the original three empires because of its strategic role. No exchange program has materialized when Jiang Yue later considers the changes from the original story. Jing Hongchen eventually revisits the idea after Meng’s ultimate-ice evolution, but chooses Jiang Yue’s proposed training approach instead. 124 132 137 173

Holy Spirit Cult Assault and Mu En’s Death

Zhongli Wu leads a force of powerful evil soul masters in an open attack, threatening to raze Shrek and uproot the Golden Tree. Twenty Sea God Pavilion elders assemble, and Xuan Zi confronts Zhongli Wu while Song Yunzhi and Yan Shaozhe help prevent the attackers from reaching the students. Xuan Zi’s Taotie power badly damages Zhongli Wu’s Bone Dragon, but leaves him injured and struggling with dangerous hunger. 124 125

Feng Ling secretly enters the academy and abducts Ma Xiaotao. Yan Shaozhe and Xuan Zi attempt to stop the retreat, but Zhongli Wu overpowers them and launches an attack threatening the academy, students, and Golden Tree. Sea God’s Light then sweeps across Shrek Academy and Shrek City, nullifying his attack and revealing that Mu En remains alive. 125 126

Mu En rescues Yan Shaozhe, restrains Zhongli Wu, and neutralizes the evil soul masters’ threatened self-detonations. He spares Zhongli Wu because killing him could provoke his mother, Ye Xishui, but orders him never to return. Zhongli Wu and Feng Ling escape with Ma Xiaotao after losing several powerful followers. 127

The defense consumes much of Mu En’s remaining vitality. He announces his intention to merge his soul with the Golden Tree for another century of protection, then privately meets Long Xiaoyao and agrees to provide dual soul core knowledge for Jiang Yue’s development. Mu En’s final Bright Holy Dragon transformation fills the academy and city with golden light as he meets his death. 127 128 129

Tang Ya Scandal and Student Departures

After Tang Ya becomes an evil soul master and is killed, Xiao Hongchen pays Ning Tian and Wu Feng with a sixth-level Mingde Hall soul tool to arrange delivery of her head to Shrek’s gates. He intends the act to expose the contradiction between Shrek’s anti-evil-soul-master reputation and the corruption of one of its former students, while testing Bei Bei’s loyalty to Tang Ya against his loyalty to the academy. 138 151

Tang Ya’s head is displayed at the academy entrance alongside a notice describing her crimes. Residual evil and divine auras support the account of her corruption and death, causing a major uproar in the Outer Court. Two years later, Shrek has still not identified the divine-attribute soul master responsible for killing her. 162

Shrek subsequently helps the Tang Sect establish a new headquarters in Shrek City. Bei Bei and Huo Yuhao undertake its rebuilding, but Ning Tian plans to compete for its potential recruits and criticizes Bei Bei for neglecting tournament preparations. 162

Wang Dong’s guardians decide that Shrek’s tournament defeat and vulnerability to evil soul master attacks make continued attendance undesirable. Although she initially protests because she wants to win the next championship for Shrek, she accepts their decision, withdraws, and later enrolls at Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy as Wang Dong’er. Her departure removes another exceptional talent from Shrek’s prospective tournament lineup. 152 162 163 170 171
