- A Devil Fruit's Lineage Factor ordinarily restricts it to a single ability. 241

Ability Mechanics
Energy Conversion and Lineage Factor
Devil Fruit abilities are fueled by the user's energy rather than functioning indefinitely. Ye Mu identifies the internal medium that converts physical energy into an ability's element as the Lineage Factor. 10
- Greater output consumes more physical energy. 10
- Improving the user's body can strengthen the Fruit's practical power. 10
- Superior-inferior relationships between Fruits are therefore not absolute; a sufficiently capable user may overcome an allegedly inferior ability. 10 234
- The Kuromi Four Brothers' mechanical bodies use energy rather than stamina, allowing unusually sustained Devil Fruit development while their energy supply lasts. 82
Logia Intangibility
According to Ye Mu's observations, a Logia user's intangibility is not the absence of a physical body. The user's body transforms into its element, then flows and changes position within that element. 10
- Observation Haki may locate the user's true body within the transformed element. 10
- Armament Haki can harm a Logia user once their true body is found. 10
- Pure-energy Logias such as the Flame-Flame, Rumble-Rumble, and Glint-Glint Fruits are considered especially difficult to seize with Haki because their produced elements lack a solid physical form. 10
Awakening and Will
Devil Fruit awakening is regarded as the ultimate stage of a Fruit ability. 294
- A Devil Fruit may develop its own consciousness or will; Ye Mu identifies such wills in both his Flame-Flame Fruit and the Hot-Hot Fruit attached to his sword, Heaven. 168 183 203
- Lililu states that a Fruit which awakens a will has broken through the “shackles” of its Lineage Factor. 203
- Ye Mu grants portions of his soul and life force to his Fruits, allowing them to gain full souls and lives before their awakened powers manifest. 293
- An awakened Logia can alter its surroundings on a massive scale, as demonstrated when Ye Mu transformed Freezing Hell between extreme heat and cold. 289 290
Interaction With Objects and Users
| Method | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Consumption by robots | The Kuromi Four Brothers gain Devil Fruit powers after eating Fruits. | Kuromu manifests the Door-Door Fruit, Kurota gains the Shroom-Shroom Fruit, Kurori gains the Sickle-Sickle Fruit, and Kuromi receives the Munch-Munch Fruit. 76 79 |
| Munch-Munch Fruit extraction | Kuromi can separate a user's Fruit power and temporarily use it. | The process produces the first known dual-Fruit user, though the separated power may disappear if its original user dies before digestion is complete. 104 |
| Object fusion | A Devil Fruit ability can be fused into an item. | Kuromi attaches the Hot-Hot Fruit to Ye Mu's sword, Heaven, allowing the blade to absorb flames and generate heat. 104 203 |
| Black Coffin extraction system | Seastone suppresses an ability user while fruits placed above serve as vessels for extracted powers. | The device consists of a two-layer Seastone box linked by holes between its user and fruit compartments. 168 |
| Mass extraction | Devil Fruit powers can be extracted repeatedly from imprisoned users. | Dr. Komi observes a Fruit appearing roughly every half hour during experiments in Impel Down. 275 |
| Multi-Fruit use | A person may wield multiple Fruit powers only under exceptional conditions. | Ye Mu achieves dual- and later triple-Fruit use through awakened Fruit consciousnesses; Blackbeard is another known exception. 227 319 502 |
Known Limits
- A normal user cannot simply eat multiple Devil Fruits; wielding more than one is treated as a taboo requiring exceptional circumstances. 227 502
- Devil Fruit powers may be suppressed by Seastone. 168
- Defeating an ability user can nullify their active effects. 141
- Certain Fruits impose severe physical costs; Baroba's Enhancement Fruit drains stamina in exchange for amplified physical attributes. 166
- A Fruit's original energy may be limited to its innate ability, forcing fused or newly created powers to rely on the user's life force instead. 237
Origins and Metaphysics
Several historical accounts describe the origin of Devil Fruits differently.
- Nicholas's account — Nika and the rebelling slaves who became the Clan of D. sacrificed themselves after their rebellion, becoming Devil Fruits to maintain the world's energy balance. 269
- Dr. Clover's account — Joy Boy created Devil Fruits using the Ancient Weapon Pluton as part of his attempt to revive the World Tree. 474
- Dr. Komi's research — The Clan of Gods created life through Lineage Factor technology and drew power through Uranus, Poseidon, and the Twin Trees. 276
- Uranus connection — Most Lineage Factor used to create Devil Fruits is said to have originated from Uranus, explaining why Fruit users cannot survive in the sea. 475
- Artificial creation — A mysterious man created the Mythical Zoan Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon before giving it to Kaido. 207
- The White Plan — Big Mom and a mysterious man attempted to create a Devil Fruit with independent life and will; Ye Mu is revealed to be the resulting living Devil Fruit, Rocks D. White. 207
