| Float-Float Fruit Awakening | 310 | Awakened his Devil Fruit during his final battle with Ye Mu, raising continent-like stone pillars from the sea and forming a massive stone sphere intended to sink or launch Ye Mu away. |
Background
Shiki was one of the sea's legendary great pirates, regarded alongside Gol D. Roger and Edward Newgate. He viewed Rocks as the strongest man he had ever encountered, with only Roger and Garp at their peaks possibly comparable. His inability to surpass such figures shaped his resentment toward destiny and his belief that lesser great men were merely “stepping stones” for the exceptional 284 305.
More than six months before his escape, Shiki attacked Marine Headquarters alone. Garp and Sengoku defeated him together and confined him in Impel Down's Level 6 under Seastone shackles and chains 273. His Flying Grand Fleet subsequently collapsed; its captains were captured or killed by the Marines and World Government, leaving only Dr. Indigo, Scarlet, and a handful of followers when Shiki returned to Totora Island 166 296.
Ye Mu secretly relocated Shiki to Impel Down's Level 5.5 and proposed a wager: Shiki would cause a prison-wide disturbance without exposing Ye Mu's involvement, then meet Ye Mu for a final duel on Shaba Island fifteen days later. Shiki accepted, escaped his restraints, and began his breakout 273 274.
Appearance
Shiki was a burly man with a vicious face, an imposing presence, and a habit of smoking cigars. A ship's wheel embedded in his head had weakened him and required Dr. Indigo's medicine to suppress its effects temporarily 295 300.
- Wore a black fur coat during his travels after escaping Impel Down 297.
- Carried a ship's wheel injury on his head, which interfered with his condition 284 300.
- Fought with the famed twin swords Oto and Kogarashi 302.
- Could float freely in the air through the Float-Float Fruit 281 296.
Personality
Shiki was arrogant, violent, and fiercely contemptuous of weakness. During the Impel Down breakout, he killed prisoners who begged him for release and treated guards and jailers as beneath his notice 277 279. He was confident that only Rocks, Roger, Garp, and Whitebeard were worthy of his regard 279.
His central obsession was rejecting a world governed by fate. Ye Mu's account of Shiki eventually being defeated by a “child of destiny” enraged him, particularly because the predicted opponent had not even mastered Haki. Rather than accept that outcome, Shiki resolved to challenge destiny through power and destruction 301 304 305.
Despite this ruthlessness, Shiki developed respect for Ye Mu's growth. He restricted their duel to swordsmanship long enough for Ye Mu to learn Armament Haki Internal Destruction, then demonstrated Conqueror's Haki Infusion so Ye Mu could grasp it for himself 304 305 306.
Abilities & Skills
Float-Float Fruit
Shiki possessed the Paramecia-type Float-Float Fruit, which allowed him to levitate himself and manipulate targets through floating force. Its mobility made the sea and Calm Belt ineffective barriers to him 281.
- Maintained Totora Island, his floating island-sized pirate ship, in the sky 296.
- Controlled sand, stone, ice, and seawater in battle 279 308.
- Used seawater offensively against Devil Fruit users, exploiting their weakness to the sea 308.
- Awakened the fruit to raise stone pillars across roughly a hundred kilometers of sea and create Earthburst Burial 310.
- His awakened power and Dr. Indigo's medicine severely strained his body during the final battle 310.
Swordsmanship
Shiki was a legendary great swordsman whose swordsmanship far exceeded Shiryu's. He taught that a great swordsman required an overwhelmingly powerful body, black blades, refined technique, and powerful Haki 282 302.
- Wielded Oto and Kogarashi in dual-sword combat 302.
- Split Shaba Island with a single slash 302.
- Used Lion Style: Secret Art: Lion God, producing a demonic lion-like manifestation through his swordsmanship and Haki 303.
- Fought Ye Mu for days, with even their exhausted strikes retaining the power to shake the heavens and sea 309.
Haki
Shiki possessed all three forms of Haki and could combine them with his swordsmanship at the highest level 284 305.
- Observation Haki — Distinguished reality from illusion even after being moved from his cell while unconscious 273.
- Armament Haki — Used advanced internal destruction through his slashes; Ye Mu learned the technique by perceiving those attacks 303 304.
- Conqueror's Haki — His Haki silenced Impel Down and could overwhelm those around him 283.
- Conqueror's Haki Infusion — Infused Conqueror's Haki into his swords and demonstrated the technique to Ye Mu 305 306.
Named Techniques
- Lion's Majesty: Earth Bind — Gathers sand and stone into a gigantic lion that attacks and crushes targets 279.
- Viper — Seizes enormous waves with the Float-Float Fruit and directs them at an opponent 308.
- Earthburst Burial — Uses awakened Float-Float power to raise stone pillars and imprison the target in an immense stone sphere 310.
Equipment
- Oto — One of Shiki's twin swords 302.
- Kogarashi — One of Shiki's twin swords 302.
- Totora Island — A floating island that served as his pirate ship and headquarters 296.
- Dr. Indigo's medicine — Temporarily suppressed the effects of Shiki's head injury and restored his prime condition, but risked irreversible confusion and blank spells if battle continued too long 300.
Relationships
- Ye Mu — Rescuer, wager partner, rival, and eventual killer. Shiki tested and instructed Ye Mu during their duel, but was ultimately defeated by him 274 304 311.
- Lililu — Longtime acquaintance from before Shiki's imprisonment; their reunion confirmed Ye Mu's connection to Rocks's legacy 273.
- Dr. Indigo — Ship's doctor and one of Shiki's last surviving subordinates; created the medicine that enabled Shiki to fight near his prime 296 300.
- Scarlet — Loyal orangutan companion and one of the last survivors of Shiki's crew 296 300.
- Gol D. Roger — Lifelong enemy whose surrender to the Marines remained a question Shiki obsessed over in prison 273.
- Edward Newgate — Fellow legendary pirate and rival from the same era; Shiki visited him after escaping Impel Down 297 298.
- Garp and Sengoku — Defeated Shiki together during his attack on Marine Headquarters and had him imprisoned in Impel Down 273.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Impel Down Escape
After Ye Mu moved him to Level 5.5, Shiki accepted the fifteen-day wager and caused devastation throughout Impel Down. He recovered his swords, massacred guards and jailers, broke through prison levels, and battled Magellan, Shiryu, Borsalino, and other personnel while waiting for the promised duel 274 277 279 280 286.
Golden Lion's Travels
Following the breakout, Shiki traveled to Loguetown and Totora Island. There, he learned firsthand that his Flying Grand Fleet had been nearly annihilated and that rebuilding it would take at least fifteen years. He then sought out Whitebeard, revealing that Ye Mu had freed him and defeated Sengoku 296 298.
Duel on Shaba Island
Shiki met Ye Mu on Shaba Island for their final battle. Their confrontation became both a fight and a philosophical dispute over destiny, power, and the future. Shiki pushed Ye Mu to master Armament Haki Internal Destruction and Conqueror's Haki Infusion before escalating to his Float-Float Fruit awakening 301 304 306 310.
Ye Mu survived Earthburst Burial and defeated Shiki after their prolonged battle. Shiki was left mortally wounded, and Ye Mu delayed his death until sunrise in recognition of his opponent's final wish 310 311.
Trivia
- Shiki's pirate crew and Ye Mu's Sky Pirates had similarly named aerial themes: the Flying Pirates and Sky Pirates 273 300.
- His final duel took place on Shaba Island, but the battle destroyed Basha Island entirely, leaving only scattered reefs 310 311.
- Shiki considered Ye Mu a possible successor to his strength, but regretted that Ye Mu was already a Devil Fruit user and therefore could not inherit the Float-Float Fruit directly 311.
