Background
Born into the pure-blood Black family, Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor despite his relatives’ expectations. After running away from home, he lived with James Potter’s family, whom he regarded as his happiest home; his mother later burned his name from the Black family tapestry. 391 524
At Hogwarts, Sirius became James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew’s friend. The four created the Marauder’s Map, and Sirius became the illegal Animagus known as Padfoot: a large black dog. 120 204 255
Peter Pettigrew betrayed James and Lily Potter, framed Sirius for the crime, and left evidence that made Sirius appear responsible. Sirius was imprisoned in Azkaban for twelve years before escaping in dog form, which concealed his human emotions from Dementors. 246 247 390
Appearance
Sirius is a tall, thin wizard with wild dark hair. Azkaban left him gaunt, ragged, and visibly malnourished; even after his release, his appearance bore the effects of imprisonment. 197 246 293
- His Animagus form is a large black dog. 255
- In dog form, the fur around his neck is black and slightly curly, resembling his human hair. 784
- His dog form was temporarily dyed white to make him less recognizable while traveling with Silvan. 211
- He has gray eyes. 214
Personality
Sirius is fiercely loyal, especially to James Potter’s memory, Harry Potter, and Remus Lupin. His pursuit of Peter began as an all-consuming need for revenge, and he repeatedly struggled to temper that impulse with the need to prove his innocence. 187 230 249
He is proud, impulsive, and often reckless. He readily provokes Severus Snape, runs dangerous practical lessons, and can make decisions before considering their consequences. However, he is capable of remorse when his actions upset Harry or endanger others. 443 497 510 523
Despite his casual attitude toward study, Sirius is candid about his academic shortcomings and values practical experience over theory. 455
Abilities & Skills
Animagus Transformation
Sirius can transform into a large black dog, an ability he used to escape Azkaban and evade Dementors.
- His Animagus name is Padfoot. 202
- Dementors cannot properly sense an animal’s emotions, enabling his escape from Azkaban. 390
- The transformation lets him move through Hogwarts and travel unnoticed, though his large black-dog form can attract attention. 187
- His retained physical traits can expose his identity to knowledgeable observers. 214 784
Dueling and Combat
Sirius is an experienced combat wizard who considers practical fighting his greatest strength.
- He believed he could have become an Auror after graduation if not for his lack of qualifications. 455
- He teaches students to resist the Disarming Charm and emphasizes quick reactions and wand retention. 456
- He can cast and counter a range of combat spells, including the Disarming Charm, Stunning Spell, Body-Bind Curse, and protective magic. 456 492
- Years in Azkaban left him physically weakened; while wandless, he was decisively outmatched by Silvan Ollivander’s Horcrux Codex and Snake Eye. 190 191
Marauder’s Map Creation
Sirius helped create the Marauder’s Map with James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew.
- The map displays Hogwarts’ layout and the names and movements of people within it. 120 239
- Its creators are identified by the aliases Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. 120
- Sirius considered it one of his proudest achievements. 204
- Even Sirius had never discovered the Room of Requirement, undermining his belief that the Marauders had explored all of Hogwarts. 652
Practical Instruction
As Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, Sirius favors active, combat-oriented teaching.
- He dismisses textbook-only learning in favor of skills useful against Dark wizards. 455
- He arranges outdoor lessons with space and soft ground for safer dueling practice. 456
- He reopens the Duelling Club and initially intends to teach the Body-Bind Curse before Snape presses for Protego. 492
- His sessions can become disorderly and cause injuries, drawing criticism from Hermione and McGonagall. 497 502

Story Role / Major Arcs
Fugitive at Hogwarts
Disguised as a dog, Sirius survives around Hogwarts and follows Crookshanks in hopes of entering the castle to kill Peter Pettigrew. He encounters Silvan and Tom, temporarily submits to Tom for food and access, and learns that Silvan is also an Animagus. 187 204
Sirius later breaks into Hogwarts and attacks the Fat Lady’s portrait while trying to reach Gryffindor Tower. Silvan confronts him, petrifies him with Snake Eye, and hides his dog-form body in a Mokeskin Pouch. 190
Alliance with Silvan and Lupin
After being revived from Dementor petrification, Sirius distrusts Silvan’s offer of help until Silvan reveals knowledge of Padfoot, the Marauder’s Map, and Lupin’s identity. Sirius agrees to provide access to the Black family home in exchange for help. 202
Silvan repeatedly prevents Sirius from using reckless plans against Peter, including breaking into Gryffindor Tower using Neville Longbottom’s written passwords. Sirius ultimately contacts Lupin and agrees to let Harry learn the truth before Peter is dealt with. 230 232 249
Exposure of Peter Pettigrew and Exoneration
Sirius confronts Peter publicly outside the Quidditch pitch. Peter admits that he betrayed James and Lily, framed Sirius, killed Muggles, and left behind a finger to fake his own death. 246 247
Dumbledore later presents Sirius’s memories through a Pensieve during his case, helping convince the Wizengamot that Sirius had been wrongfully imprisoned. The Daily Prophet eventually announces that Sirius has been declared innocent. 365 387
Harry’s Guardian
Following his exoneration, Sirius meets Harry in Hogsmeade, buys gifts for Harry and his friends, and promises support if Harry needs help. 391
Although Sirius wants Harry to live with him, he prioritizes the protective magic at the Dursleys’ home. He threatens Vernon and Petunia Dursley and pays them to ensure Harry’s safety. 609
Hogwarts Professor
Dumbledore appoints Sirius as Hogwarts’ Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. He openly addresses his former status as a fugitive and gains students’ goodwill through honesty and a relaxed teaching style. 449 455
His tenure is marked by practical lessons, the revival of the Duelling Club, and repeated disputes with Snape. Sirius’s enthusiasm and bias toward Gryffindor often create disciplinary problems. 456 492 502
Impersonation and Lost Memories
Silvan notices inconsistencies in Sirius’s behavior and suspects an impostor. Although the Marauder’s Map initially displays the name “Sirius Black,” Dumbledore later confirms that Bellatrix Lestrange impersonated Sirius and that Sirius lost memories before reaching Hogwarts. 464 474 547
After recovering, Sirius concludes that the Death Eaters likely learned Hogwarts’ secret passages through his memories and urges Dumbledore to seal them. 782
Order of the Phoenix and the Second War
Sirius helps Dumbledore establish a secret location for the re-formed Order of the Phoenix. 513
He assists Silvan and Lupin in testing whether Silvan’s unicorn magic can dispel Dark curses. Sirius initially hopes the magic may help Lupin’s werewolf condition and later volunteers as a target for increasingly dangerous Dark magic. 652 653
