Background / History

Nalan Yanran was engaged to Xiao Yan through an agreement made by her grandfather, Nalan Jie, and Xiao Yan's grandfather, Xiao Lin. The arrangement originated from Nalan Jie's gratitude after Xiao Lin saved his life. As a child, Yanran met Xiao Yan once when he visited with Xiao Zhan. 5 28

By the time she returned to the Xiao Clan, she had become a gifted disciple personally valued by Cloud Mist Sect Master Yun Yun and was being groomed as the sect's next successor. Accompanied by Elder Ge Ye, she sought to annul her engagement so that she could choose her own future and focus entirely on cultivation. 5

The annulment turned hostile when Xiao Tian suppressed the Cloud Mist Sect delegation. Yanran challenged Xiao Yan to a three-year pact, offering to become his servant if he could defeat her. Xiao Yan instead rejected her outright and ended their engagement himself.
