Background

Origin and reincarnation

The Yan Emperor found Heng'e injured and brought her to Ting Yao, who named her Chang'e and chose to raise her. She possessed an innate Lunar Star body, while Yan Ju—then still unborn—recognized her as the reincarnation of Chang Xi, the Lunar Star Goddess he had once served 232.

Her Lunar origin was incomplete. The scent and aura of Yan Ju's Solar True Fire provoked an instinctive dislike in her, creating immediate friction between them when she became his attendant 233 234. Yan Ju later gave her the Grand Lunar Form-Refining Art, an art suited to replenishing her source and restoring her former Dao attainments 235.

Chang Xi's memories

Fragments of Heng'e's former memories gradually resurfaced. She remembered a cold, silver-white world, a beloved sister, and a sense of betrayal whose cause she could not initially recall 244. When the ten suns appeared, she witnessed visions of their deaths and became convinced that she had somehow participated in them 248.

Yan Ju deduced that an unknown schemer had extracted Chang Xi's Lunar origin to create the arrows that slew the Golden Crow princes. The plot harmed both the Solar and Lunar lineages and was designed to shatter Chang Xi's Dao heart once she recovered her memories 248. Heng'e ultimately resolves to uncover the truth behind the theft of her origin and repay her grievances 254.

Lunar Hell and the Nine Netherworld

At Yan Ju's direction, Heng'e cultivated Daoheart Salvation to redeem the yin corpses, resentful souls, and evil spirits held in the Ten-Thousand Souls Divine Banner. Experiencing their tribulations deepened her Dao heart and taught her compassion for beings the ancient gods dismissed as worthless 249 254.

After recovering part of her authority through the Lunar Soul Pearl, Heng'e used primordial pure-yin ancestral qi to establish Lunar Hell. She divided its small world into eighteen layers of hell and placed a second-generation Lunar Laurel tree within it 266 267. The yin soldiers and divine generals who later serve in the Nine Netherworld cultivate Profound Yin secret arts developed by her 276.

Appearance

Heng'e is repeatedly noted for her exceptional beauty, long black hair, and clear, pale complexion. Her bearing changes markedly after Chang Xi's memories return: the formerly uncertain orphan girl develops the cold dignity, confidence, and pride of a Lunar divine maiden 233 254.

Personality

Heng'e begins as guarded and insecure. She regards herself as an orphan without a powerful background and initially doubts whether she can offer Yan Ju anything of value 242 253. Her instinctive distaste for the Solar lineage also makes her openly disdainful toward him during their early encounters 233 234.

Recovering Chang Xi's memories gives her greater poise and resolve. She becomes determined to reclaim what was stolen from her and refuses to let the Lunar lineage's former tragedy repeat itself 254 277.

Despite her cold Lunar nature, Heng'e is compassionate. She accepts the burden of saving resentful souls, comes to understand their suffering, and later spares the ice phoenixes she encounters in the Eastern Lands 249 265. She also recognizes the value of guiding ghosts, evil entities, and yin-attributed beings onto a righteous path rather than simply destroying them 258.
