Background & History

During the War of the Ancients, Elisande led a group of High Elf sorcerers in Suramar who had been loyal to Queen Azshara. After discovering that the Burning Legion intended to open another portal in Suramar's Temple of Elune, she turned against the demons' plans. Elisande and her followers sealed the portal with the Pillars of Creation, then used the Eye of Aman'Thul to create the Nightwell rather than join the Kaldorei Resistance. The Nightwell preserved Suramar through the Great Sundering and gradually transformed its people into the Nightborne 355.

Over the following millennia, Suramar became dependent on the Nightwell. When its energy could no longer comfortably support the city's growing population, Elisande endorsed rationing and the expulsion of Nightborne who had become a burden on the city's resources. Many exiles became Nightfallen or died after losing access to the Nightwell, while Elisande's increasingly severe rule alienated her former close comrade, Thalyssra 355.

Elisande opposed Thalyssra's proposal to abandon Suramar and seek a future beyond the Nightwell. She considered the Nightborne too dependent on the well to survive outside the city and instead favored researching a safe solution before opening Suramar to the world 355.

When Orendo threatened Suramar with repeated meteors, Elisande and Thalyssra set aside their differences to defend the city. Elisande exhausted herself using the Eye of Aman'Thul to shrink the final meteor, suffering severe arcane backlash in the process 357 358. Orendo later removed the artifact's uncontrolled power from her body and restored her condition, after which Elisande supported Suramar's accession to the Azeroth Alliance 359 360.

Elisande delegated much of Suramar's daily governance to Thalyssra while retaining her position as Grand Magistrix. After the Nightwell manifested as Anveena, Elisande accepted the incarnation as her daughter and publicly announced her as Suramar's princess 361 364 365.

Elisande is a tall, slender, graceful Nightborne woman with amethyst-toned skin and striking violet eyes. Her usual bearing is dignified, stern, and cold, befitting Suramar's long-serving ruler 356 359 363.

She possesses strong political ambition and a desire to retain control. For millennia, her authority rested on her command of the Nightwell; when the well developed an independent consciousness, Elisande immediately understood that this endangered the foundation of her power 364. Anveena calling her “Mommy” resolved this fear, giving Elisande both genuine maternal affection and a renewed symbolic claim over Suramar's lifeblood 364 365.

Following her relationship with Orendo, Elisande becomes markedly gentler in private and increasingly possessive of him. Her jealousy of Thalyssra's interest in Orendo reflects the same instinct to monopolize what she considers vital to her security and happiness 361 366 367.

After recovering from the battle, Elisande decides to open Suramar to the outside world and supports joining the Azeroth Alliance despite potential Senate opposition. The Nightborne formally sign their treaty with the Alliance, represented by Brann Bronzebeard 359 365 367.

Anveena's Manifestation

When Orendo's Spirit Imbuement awakens a consciousness within the Nightwell, Elisande faces the loss of her former control over Suramar's lifeline. She instead becomes Anveena's foster mother, securing a new personal and political bond with the sentient Nightwell 364.
