Background

Hidden Stone is a major shinobi village of the Land of Earth, surrounded by rocks and towering mountains. Its formidable natural defenses and conservative culture accompany a military system built around united manpower, extensive territory, and large-scale Earth Release formations. Under the Third Tsuchikage, Ōnoki, the village reached a period of prosperity; its resources are described as below the Land of Fire's but roughly comparable to the Land of Lightning's 138.

Its conflicts with Sunagakure repeatedly stem from competition over resources. Hidden Stone remained especially wary of Hidden Sand after suffering from its poisons during the Second Shinobi World War, and later often hired bounty ninja rather than committing its own forces directly. Akatsuki became its largest client in this period 138.

History

Border Friction and the Bright Gold Mine

Gaara's removal from Sunagakure and the loss of Shukaku destabilized Hidden Sand, intensifying border friction with Hidden Stone 132. During a clash in Bear Country, combat exposed a quartz vein containing Bright Gold. Both sides suffered losses before withdrawing, but Hidden Sand arrived first and occupied the mine 136.

Ōnoki regarded the mine—valued at several billion—as worth a larger commitment than prior resource disputes. He arranged for Akatsuki to target Rasa and ordered Hidden Stone forces under Kitsuchi to prepare a covert intervention 138.

Gold Mine Battle

Hidden Stone and Akatsuki attacked Sunagakure's mine defenses, neutralizing poison and explosive traps with Kisame's water technique and overcoming defenses through coordinated Earth Release bombardment 147. The force then established a maze fortress around the gold vein, forcing Rasa's army into a slow attritional battle 155 157.

Kitsuchi secretly assembled hundreds of reinforcements while Akatsuki eliminated all twelve of Hidden Sand's scout teams, depriving Rasa of battlefield intelligence 157 159. Hidden Stone eventually encircled the mine and severely pressured the trapped Hidden Sand force, but Kaguya Gaito's intervention allowed survivors to escape and shattered Hidden Stone morale 165 166.

Despite its preparations, Hidden Stone ultimately gained little from the Gold Mine Battle and declined to ransom the captured Rasa 184.

Campaign in the Land of Wind

After Rasa's capture and Pakura's elevation to Fifth Kazekage, Ōnoki ordered Hidden Stone into war readiness, recalled units, and mobilized Han, the Five-Tails jinchūriki 175 186. A thousand-man force later crossed into the Land of Wind 200.

The desert initially inflicted heavy delays through sandstorms, quicksand traps, poisoned supply lines, and guerrilla attacks. Hidden Stone responded by using Earth Release scouts to test terrain, traveling at night, building underground shelters, reinforcing its supply routes, and studying local conditions over two months 200.

Han led a covert reconnaissance team, but Pakura ambushed it to obtain intelligence and demonstrate Sunagakure's resolve 206. At Sandthorn Bay, Hidden Stone endured repeated aerial raids by Zhengye and Pakura, suffering major losses before adopting bunker construction and layered Earth Release countermeasures 211 212 225.

By the time three thousand additional Hidden Stone combat personnel entered the Land of Wind, Pakura and Rasa were forced to conduct aerial reconnaissance themselves to assess the threat 223.
