Background / History

ANBU service and Shisui's fall

Itachi served in Konoha's ANBU and leaked extensive Uchiha intelligence to the Lord Third's side, believing he was acting to preserve peace. The Lord Third repeatedly praised his “capacity” and presented him as the sole clear-minded Uchiha, reinforcing Itachi's pride and isolation from his clan. 2 7

When Danzō stole Shisui's right eye, Shisui entrusted his left eye to Itachi and attempted suicide. Itachi's grief at watching his friend fall awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan. Zhengye, Inabi, and Tekka had already positioned themselves below the cliff and saved Shisui. 1

Zhengye then showed Itachi a vision of the future Uchiha massacre. Watching his future self murder civilians and finally his own parents, as well as witnessing Obito kill Izumi, destroyed Itachi's certainty that he would never betray the clan. He accepted Zhengye as a senior and joined Shisui, Inabi, and Tekka under Zhengye's leadership to prevent that future. 3 4 5

Uchiha counterattack

Itachi used his ANBU access to neutralize Konoha surveillance and later helped the Uchiha assault Root's base. His familiarity with the facility allowed him to identify likely exits and internal locations during the operation. 7 10

During the clan confrontation preceding the assault, Itachi publicly confessed that he had been deceived by the Third Hokage and had sold out the clan's interests. His admission exposed the failure of Fugaku's double-agent strategy and marked his open rejection of his former role as Konoha's informant. 7

During the confrontation with Danzō, Itachi deployed Susanoo to block Wind Style attacks and used genjutsu to incapacitate Yamanaka Fū. He and Shisui cut through Root's defenders as the clan reclaimed Shisui's stolen Sharingan. 11

Cornered at Konoha's walls, Shisui publicly declared that he and Itachi were defecting. Both slashed their forehead protectors before escaping; Itachi used Amaterasu to create an opening against Jiraiya, ANBU, and the pursuing forces. 61

While operating with Shisui in Bear Country, Itachi ambushed a Hidden Sand team led by Shakou. He defeated a jōnin and two puppet users without activating his Sharingan, Susanoo, or other ocular techniques, while deliberately allowing several enemies to escape and spread word of the pair's strength. 139

Capture of the Five-Tails

After Zhengye, Shisui, and Itachi located Deidara and the wounded Five-Tails Jinchūriki Han near the Land of Earth border, Itachi and Shisui helped launch Zhengye into the air, enabling Zhengye to disable Deidara's clay bird with Lightning Release. 248

When Han attempted to escape, Itachi and Shisui pursued him with synchronized swordsmanship, speed, Fire Release, and Mangekyō techniques. Their assault forced Han to transform fully into Kokuō, but their simultaneous Mangekyō genjutsu incapacitated both jinchūriki and tailed beast. 249

Itachi and Shisui subsequently escorted the captive Han toward Konoha under Zhengye's orders. Return to Konoha

During his return to Konoha, Itachi accepted a new Konoha forehead protector after Zhengye ordered him to do so, despite the emotional weight of replacing the slashed protector he had worn since his defection. 253

He openly reunited with Sasuke and resumed a more visible place within his family and clan community. While explaining Fugaku's resignation to Sasuke, Itachi stated that Zhengye was the only person capable of leading the Uchiha Clan. 254

Itachi later provided an ocular-tissue sample for Orochimaru's Sharingan research. His sample is considered especially valuable because his Mangekyō eyes are known to be compatible with Sasuke's future Mangekyō Sharingan for Eternal Mangekyō research. 259

Hidden Mist conflict and departure from Akatsuki

After publicly declining Hidden Cloud's proposed mission against Hidden Mist, Zhengye secretly sent Shisui and Itachi orders to investigate through a crow messenger. The pair attended Akatsuki's meeting for the expedition, whose participants were instructed to gather at Meeting Point Sixteen in the Land of Fire. 270

Itachi subsequently arrived outside Windrest City with Pain, Konan, Shisui, Kisame, Jūzō, and Kakuzu. Kaito and Yagura exposed Pain, Konan, and the Tiger-Masked Man's involvement in controlling Yagura, exterminating bloodline clans, and siphoning away the Land of Water's finances. When Jūzō turned against Pain and was attacked, Itachi and Kisame intervened to protect him. Itachi also caught Jūzō after Pain's Shinra Tensei blasted the group backward. 277

Challenged about his allegiance, Itachi declared that he would not allow his teammates to die before his eyes. Shisui explained that the Uchiha pair had joined Akatsuki to investigate the Tiger-Masked Man and rejected the organization's methods after discovering his involvement. The ensuing conflict left Yugito critically injured after taking Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi. When Pain burst Kisame's enormous underwater sphere with Shinra Tensei, Shisui protected Itachi inside his green Susanoo. 281

Kisame later suffered devastating injuries from the Fourth Raikage and was caught in Pain's Planetary Devastation. As he lost consciousness, he remembered Itachi's invitation to share a meal and his reflections on how people discover their true nature through decisive choices. Following Akatsuki's losses in Hidden Mist, Pain confirmed that Twin Eyes had returned to Konoha, while Twin Blades had returned to Hidden Mist. 302

Land of Wind operations and Sasori's revelation

At the Sea Mountain Cliff camp in the Land of Wind, Itachi consulted his notebook and courteously approached Chiyo for information while she tended the wounded. His restrained, respectful behavior surprised her, given his reputation as a Mangekyō wielder and member of Twin Eyes. 316

During Deidara's aerial attack against Hidden Sand's forces, Itachi improvised with the Sand's Battery Rods, throwing them so their collisions redirected their trajectories into Deidara's flight path. With Aikawa's assistance, he launched himself upward to continue the confrontation. 325 326

Deidara believed he had trapped Itachi in a clay clone and destroyed him, but those events were already part of a genjutsu. Itachi had placed illusions in the red eyes of his crow flock, ensnaring Deidara despite his avoidance of direct eye contact. Leaving Aikawa to restrain the unconscious Deidara, Itachi moved to Sasori and Chiyo's battlefield. 326

After Sasori gravely wounded Chiyo, Itachi told him that her long delay had been motivated by her hope of reviving his parents. He used Tsukuyomi to recreate Sasori's childhood grief and then show an imagined scene in which Chiyo sacrificed herself through One's Own Life Reincarnation to revive Sasori's mother, Lingzi. The unusually intricate Tsukuyomi pushed the fifteen-year-old Itachi toward collapse, leaving him unable to move as blood streamed from his eyes. A mark placed by Zhengye activated, and three seconds later a stream of ocular power reached him across space, relieving his pain. Zhengye supplied that power through an Eye Power Transfer Scroll after detecting the consumption of his Transcription Seal mark. 327 328

Itachi then used a special healing bandage from Zhengye to transfer Chiyo's fatal chest wound to her calf and stabilize her. Sasori found Chiyo's real research scroll and notes, confirming the devotion behind the vision and overturning his belief that she had deliberately abandoned or deceived him. 327
