Background / History

ANBU service and Shisui's fall

Itachi served in Konoha's ANBU and leaked extensive Uchiha intelligence to the Third Hokage's side, believing he was acting to preserve peace. The Third Hokage repeatedly praised his “capacity” and presented him as the sole clear-minded Uchiha, reinforcing Itachi's pride and isolation from his clan. 2 7

When Danzō stole Shisui's right eye, Shisui entrusted his left eye to Itachi and attempted suicide. Itachi's grief at watching his friend fall awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan. Zhengye, Inabi, and Tekka had already positioned themselves below the cliff and saved Shisui. 1

Zhengye then showed Itachi a vision of the future Uchiha massacre. Watching his future self murder civilians, Izumi, and finally his own parents destroyed Itachi's certainty that he would never betray the clan. He accepted Zhengye as a senior and joined Shisui, Inabi, and Tekka under Zhengye's leadership to prevent that future. 3 4 5

Uchiha counterattack

Itachi used his ANBU access to neutralize Konoha surveillance and later helped the Uchiha assault Root's base. His familiarity with the facility allowed him to identify likely exits and internal locations during the operation. 7 10

During the confrontation with Danzō, Itachi deployed Susanoo to block Wind Style attacks and used genjutsu to incapacitate Yamanaka Fū. He and Shisui cut through Root's defenders as the clan reclaimed Shisui's stolen Sharingan. 11

Reconciliation with his family

After seeing the future massacre, Itachi began opening up to Fugaku and Mikoto about the pain of his ANBU service and his fears for the clan. He came to understand that Fugaku had cared for and understood him more than he had realized. 5 16

He also made a deliberate effort to spend time with Sasuke, practicing shuriken throwing with him and shifting his view of guidance away from combat ability alone. Zhengye encouraged him to become a protective example for Sasuke rather than simply train him. 21 31

When Zhengye explained that Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan required the fusion of two pairs of Mangekyō eyes, Fugaku offered his own eyes to Itachi. Itachi hesitated out of concern for both Fugaku and Sasuke. 34

Defection and Akatsuki

Itachi and Shisui later attacked Danzō's recovery ward, fighting through ANBU forces and clashing with Jiraiya. Their combined Mangekyō perception, genjutsu, and swordsmanship enabled them to force their way through Konoha's defenses. 59 60

Cornered at Konoha's walls, Shisui publicly declared that he and Itachi were defecting. Both slashed their forehead protectors before escaping; Itachi used Amaterasu to create an opening against Jiraiya, ANBU, and the pursuing forces. 61

The pair subsequently joined the Akatsuki after Shisui used Kotoamatsukami to alter Konan's judgment. Itachi remained quiet during the recruitment, but supported Shisui's decision and continued operating beside him. 70 71

Akatsuki continued evaluating the pair after their recruitment, but Itachi and Shisui remained with the organization despite its attack on a Hidden Cloud caravan. 85

Bear Country operations

While operating with Shisui in Bear Country, Itachi ambushed a Hidden Sand team led by Shakou. He defeated a jōnin and two puppet users without activating his Sharingan, Susanoo, or other ocular techniques, while deliberately allowing several enemies to escape and spread word of the pair's strength. 139

Following the two ambushes, Itachi and Shisui confiscated gold bars mined by Hidden Sand's forces. 139

During the later clash involving Akatsuki, Hidden Sand, and Hidden Stone, Itachi and the other Akatsuki operatives were defeated by Kaguya Gaito. Itachi suffered a dislocated arm, which Shisui reset after the battle. 168

Personality

Initially, Itachi is proud, reserved, and deeply convinced of his own judgment. His confidence is strengthened by the Third Hokage's praise, and he insists that he would never turn against the Uchiha despite his role as Konoha's informant. 2

The vision of the massacre leaves him remorseful and uncertain of himself. Rather than rejecting what he sees, he accepts responsibility for the path he could have taken and changes his allegiance to protect his clan and family. 3 5

Afterward, Itachi becomes notably more affectionate toward Sasuke and more receptive to Zhengye's guidance. He comes to value judgment, learning, and personal character over raw combat talent. 16 31
