Background / History

Rise to Kazekage

Rasa received guidance in Magnet Release from the Third Kazekage, whom he regarded as effectively half his teacher. His military achievements after the Third Shinobi World War earned him the position of Fourth Kazekage 169 217.

As Kazekage, he supplemented Sunagakure’s strained finances by mining and selling Gold Dust. He also promoted a younger faction of officials, including Murata Ichiro in mission allocation, Nakao Jubei in military deployment, and Yura in internal defense 87 128.

Gaara and Shukaku

Rasa repeatedly sent assassins against his young son, Gaara, ostensibly to test his worth as a jinchūriki. Shukaku later explained that these attempts had begun three years earlier and were a reason the beast kept trying to escape. He also attributed Gaara’s suffering and Yashamaru’s death to Rasa 87 94 104.

During Zhengye’s business visit, Rasa agreed to a secret arrangement allowing Sunagakure to hire Uchiha for covert missions. He also accepted the possibility of using them as inside assets against Konoha and ordered Ironcutter ninja tools 90.

Shukaku’s subsequent rampage forced Rasa into battle while already exhausted from a delayed return through a sandstorm. He restrained the beast with Gold Dust and detonated its forming Tailed Beast Ball before it could be fired at the village, but the explosion caused extensive casualties. Nearly out of chakra, he permitted Zhengye to intervene despite the stated risk of killing Gaara 90 91.

Zhengye secretly sealed Gaara alive, then told Rasa that the child had merged with Shukaku and could not be saved. Rasa accepted this explanation. After the search found no remains, he silently mourned Gaara and ordered the sealing squad to monitor the Tea Bowl for Shukaku’s resurrection 92 96.

Attempted Sacrifice of Pakura

Rasa conspired with Suikazan Fuguki to hand Pakura over to Hidden Mist. The arrangement would remove a political rival while presenting her death as a concession toward peace negotiations. Zhengye discovered the plot and rescued her from the ambush 109 110.

Pakura returned with a ceasefire agreement signed by Mizukage Karatachi Yagura. Chiyo and Ebizo used the failed negotiations, surrendered mining rights, and Rasa’s handling of Shukaku to challenge his leadership. Over the following month, the old guard reclaimed departmental authority, ending his effective one-man rule 126 128 129.

Gold Mine Battle and Capture

Rasa traveled to Bear Country to exploit a contested Bright Gold mine. His Magnet Release made extraction exceptionally efficient, while the surrounding gold strengthened his defenses against Akatsuki. He reinforced the tunnels against collapse, repelled Kakuzu’s infiltration, and kept his men supplied with air when Kisame flooded the mine 136 142 143.

Despite these tactical successes, he twice abandoned troops during the wider conflict. After the first escape, he claimed Kinoshita and Aikawa had died protecting him; they had actually survived and later joined Pakura. During the second breakout, he fled with Baki while his remaining forces continued fighting. Pakura and Kaguya Gaito rescued approximately two hundred survivors 150 152 154 163 167.

Rasa escaped with nearly all the mine’s gold and turned on his pursuers. His Golden Spiral Thorns wounded Konan, broke through Sasori’s Hiruko, and pressured Deidara. Discovering that Sasori possessed the Third Kazekage’s corpse made the battle personal, but Rasa still withdrew when continued fighting became disadvantageous 168 169.

Pain intercepted him, shattered his defenses with Shinra Tensei, and captured him alive. The Human Path extracted information about the gold and recovered storage scrolls containing bars worth at least two billion 172.

Removal and Ransom

The surviving troops’ accounts destroyed Rasa’s reputation. With Hidden Stone preparing an invasion and the Kazekage confirmed captured, Sunagakure elected Pakura as the Fifth Kazekage. Even Baki supported her appointment 184.

Akatsuki initially demanded five hundred million for Rasa. After Kakuzu threatened to sell him to Hidden Cloud for two hundred million, Sunagakure agreed to that lower ransom on the condition that Rasa personally pay compensation for the war’s casualties 194.

On returning, Rasa retained the designation “Fourth Kazekage” but had virtually no political authority. He refused a proposed deployment, citing his compensation obligations and hoping the village would eventually seek his help on favorable terms. Pakura instead pursued outside assistance 200 201 215.

Attempted Comeback

Alarmed by Pakura and Zhengye’s battlefield successes, Rasa volunteered for the northeastern front. With a forty-eight-man company providing diversionary Wind Release, he secretly undermined a Hidden Stone camp and used Gold Dust Imperial Funeral to bury four hundred shinobi. He allowed scouts outside the destroyed camp to escape so they would spread news of his return 217 219 220.

The victory did not restore his colleagues’ trust. Kinoshita refused to share intelligence, and Rasa entered a confrontation without knowing Han was commanding the enemy force. Han drove him back with thrown boulders and withdrew his troops without accepting Rasa’s challenge 223 225 226.

Rasa subsequently performed sustained aerial reconnaissance and earned command of six hundred troops for the Liyan Pit ambush. Deidara’s underground bombs disrupted his formation, and their aerial duel prevented him from intercepting Han. Although Rasa destroyed Deidara’s C2 Dragon, a clay-clone explosion nearly killed him; Obito, posing as Senju Hiroshi, saved him with Wood Release. Rasa’s command authority was revoked afterward 229 232 233 235.

Betrayal and Defection

Obito and Zetsu exploited Rasa’s resentment toward his replacement. Rasa agreed to lure Pakura into an ambush near Red Hemp Forest and sabotage Zhengye’s flight device if he accompanied her 226 236.

During the mission, Rasa concealed Gold Dust inside the device, causing it to malfunction. Once Hidden Stone surrounded Pakura and Zhengye, he departed under the pretext of fetching reinforcements, intending to leave them without surviving witnesses to expose him 238.

Their survival ruined the plan. Pakura announced his defection and resolved to place him on the wanted list. With his position lost and few alternatives remaining, Rasa accepted an offer of missions and protection from Akatsuki 242 243.

Revenge Against Sunagakure

Two years into Pakura’s tenure, Rasa recognized Baki’s disguised supply caravan and followed it in search of an opportunity for revenge. He attacked Pakura’s escort from the air, but her new Scorch Release flight technique overturned his aerial advantage. Burned through his Sand Armor and short of Gold Dust, he retreated 297 298.

After learning that the caravan carried Thermally Conductive Crystal Ore, he decided to sell the information to Hidden Stone. Later, Obito asked him to gather intelligence for Sasori and Deidara’s mission. Rasa agreed outwardly but privately resented Akatsuki as well as Pakura and Zhengye, wishing for all sides to fight one another 298 303.

Appearance

  • As Kazekage: Wears a dark everyday outfit rather than formal Kazekage robes at the high-level meeting 128.
  • Skin: Described retrospectively as dark and formerly smooth 303.
  • After defection: Wears greasy, coarse hemp clothing resembling a gold prospector’s attire. His skin is scratched, and he looks filthy and aged 303.
  • Akatsuki clothing: Does not possess the organization’s black robe with red clouds because he is not an official member 303.

Personality

Rasa judges people heavily by their usefulness. He declares that Gaara has no remaining value as a jinchūriki and treats soldiers’ sacrifices as justification for his own survival. His mining contributions also become leverage: he believes that financing Sunagakure makes him indispensable 91 150 163 194 201.

He is an experienced and resourceful combatant, capable of remaining calm during a siege, organizing logistics, conserving chakra during pursuit, and exploiting terrain. Those strengths coexist with a willingness to abandon troops when personally threatened 142 155 163 171 219.

His loss of status produces wounded pride rather than lasting reform. He repeatedly invokes his former title, seeks victories that will restore his reputation, and eventually lets resentment drive him into betrayal and revenge against Sunagakure 220 223 226 236 297.

Rasa is not entirely without attachment. He silently grieves Gaara’s presumed death, remembering Karura, and reacts with genuine fury to the desecration of the Third Kazekage. Neither feeling prevents his broader pattern of treating others as expendable 96 169.

Abilities & Skills

Magnet Release: Gold Dust

Rasa’s kekkei genkai controls the gold contained within Gold Dust. He can also manipulate pure gold, with gold-rich terrain greatly increasing his offensive and defensive strength 142 143.

  • Terrain conversion: Converts surrounding sand into Gold Dust; converting earth is slower and more chakra-intensive. Existing gold accelerates the process 90 153.
  • Restraint: Creates ropes and whips to seize enemies or restrict movement 225 232.
  • Shukaku suppression: Forces Gold Dust into Shukaku’s sand body, increasing its weight until movement becomes difficult 91.
  • Supply dependence: High-altitude combat limits access to fresh sand, leaving him dependent on the Gold Dust he carries 298.
  • Chakra cost: Large-scale conversion, extraction, and demolition repeatedly leave him exhausted 160 156 220.

Offensive Techniques

  • Gold Dust Imperial Funeral: Produces a massive Gold Dust wave against Shukaku. In a later terrain trap, it collapses and seals a kilometer-wide camp beneath immense quantities of sand, killing four hundred shinobi 91 219.
  • Gold Scatter Shot: Fires a dense gold barrage capable of dispersing Kisame’s Five Feeding Sharks underwater 143.
  • Pure-gold volleys: Pierce rock and destroy Kakuzu’s fire-attribute Earth Grudge Fear. Pure gold is much heavier than ordinary Gold Dust and cannot be redirected as freely during these attacks 143 147.
  • Gold Dust Cube: Smashes fortifications and traps, but its range and substantial chakra cost can be exploited through attrition 153 155 156.
  • Golden Triangle: Forms a massive wedge for a breakout charge, then explodes it into shards while stopping fragments headed toward allied troops 163.
  • Golden Spiral Thorns: Launches rapidly spinning, pre-stored projectiles. These pierce Hiruko, wound Konan, and threaten Deidara, but fail to penetrate the Third Kazekage puppet’s Iron Sand pyramid 167 168 169.
  • Gold Dust: Sand Shower: Converts scattered Gold Dust into a bullet-like barrage after an initial compressed attack 171.
  • Gold Dust Drizzle: Releases a descending torrent from a carried scroll for aerial bombardment 297.

Defense and Battlefield Engineering

  • Gold Dust Wall: Blocks projectiles, Wind Release attacks, and shockwaves. Pain breaks through it, while Pakura’s Scorch Release melts its surface 91 172 298.
  • Sand Armor: Helps him survive Deidara’s ambush, but does not prevent burns from Scorch Release 232 298.
  • Tunnel supports: Uses gold pillars, shaped and fixed with allied Fire and Water Release, to withstand a mine collapse 142.
  • Emergency air supply: Extends gold pipes toward air pockets to let his troops breathe inside a flooded mine 143.
  • Friction removal: Saturates sand with moving gold particles, preventing enemies from gaining traction as the ground collapses 219.
  • Golden Cloud Tread: Creates suspended golden steps for troops crossing a chasm 163.

Flight and Reconnaissance

Rasa rides a Gold Dust Sand Cushion, using sustained flight for combat, escape, and observation 157 226.

  • Carries companions while shielding them with Gold Dust 163 167.
  • Increases the cushion’s size and speed by adding mined gold and supplying more chakra 167.
  • Outpaces the Third Kazekage puppet’s Iron Sand wings, allowing him to recover chakra while controlling the distance of pursuit 171.
  • Creates a Sand Eye for remote observation through a mine passage 142.
  • Uses binoculars and telescopes to identify troops, supply routes, and terrain from altitude 217 229 238.

Mining and Command

  • Gold extraction: Pulls Bright Gold from quartz veins. Smaller ore fragments permit faster extraction, while carrying partly processed ore conserves chakra 136 160.
  • Logistics: Separates item-transport summon users into a dedicated unit and keeps them off the front lines 155.
  • Siege preparation: Deploys ballistae, Explosive Tags, paralysis powder, and poison in defensive works 145.
  • Tactical adaptation: Orders mutually supporting squads, additional lighting, and more Explosive Tags after losses inside Hidden Stone’s maze 157.
  • Supply analysis: Determines Hidden Stone’s troop strength and dwindling water reserves, then predicts a water-collection movement toward Liyan Pit 229.

Equipment / Items

  • Gold Dust and gold reserves — Carried in crates or storage scrolls for immediate use in combat and flight 90 167 297.

  • Baki — Former close minister and battlefield aide, whom Rasa takes along during both escapes. Baki’s loyalty remains with Sunagakure; he supports Pakura’s election and refuses to excuse Rasa’s abandonment of their comrades 184 201.
  • Uchiha Zhengye — Initially a business partner and prospective covert ally. Zhengye rescues Gaara and Pakura, helps undermine Rasa’s standing, and survives Rasa’s later sabotage and betrayal 90 92 110 238.
  • Chiyo and Ebizo — Elder opponents who expose his failures, reclaim institutional authority, and support Pakura’s succession 128 129 184.
  • Kinoshita and Aikawa — Abandoned subordinates who survive, join Pakura, and help expose his conduct. Kinoshita later refuses him intelligence 154 184 223.
  • Guzhaochuan — Company captain who follows Rasa’s orders while resenting his earlier losses and abandonment. Witnessing the destruction of four hundred enemies does not erase that contempt 217 219.
  • Obito / Senju Hiroshi and Zetsu — Manipulators who exploit his political isolation, arrange his betrayal, and recruit him into Akatsuki. Rasa knows Obito through the Hiroshi identity 145 226 236 243.
  • Pain — Captor and leader of the organization Rasa later joins. Pain defeats him decisively and extracts the location of his gold 172 243.
  • Kakuzu — Ransom negotiator who treats Rasa as a source of profit and uses threats to pressure both him and Sunagakure 194.
  • Sasori — Enemy responsible for killing Rasa’s mentor. Their duel combines personal hostility with counters based on Rasa’s knowledge of the Third Kazekage’s techniques 169 171.
