History

Founding and rise

Konoha was founded by the Uchiha and Senju clans. In the nearly two decades of peace following the First Shinobi World War, its favorable geography enabled faster political, economic, and military development than the other major villages. 17 165

Its leadership later declared war on Sunagakure to demonstrate Konoha's strength. The campaign initially gave Konoha the upper hand, but its losses and the wider imbalance created by the conflict laid the groundwork for further wars. 17

Conflict with the Uchiha

After Senju Tobirama's death and Sarutobi Hiruzen's succession as Hokage, the Uchiha clan faced increasing suppression under Hiruzen and Shimura Danzō. Their strength and arrogance had also left them isolated from Konoha's other clans and civilian population. 6

Uchiha Shaoyu and a group of clan elites secretly escaped through passages beneath the Uchiha compound and defected to Kumogakure. Their departure deprived Konoha of a significant Sharingan force and exposed the depth of the village's internal divisions. 11 12 41

Konoha's leadership subsequently pursued a policy of pacifying and dividing the remaining Uchiha. Hiruzen approved Danzō's plan to send Hawk Faction members into especially dangerous wartime deployments while preserving more compliant members within the village. 54

Danzō later infiltrated the Uchiha Inner Treasury and attempted to steal preserved Sharingan from seventeen funerary jars. Although Uchiha guards discovered him, Hiruzen ordered Fugaku to release Danzō, further intensifying resentment within the clan. 109 110 113 114

Third Shinobi World War and defeat

Kumogakure invaded the Land of Fire with an army of 8,000 led by Shaoyu, while Iwagakure mobilized 10,000 ninja. Konoha could field roughly 13,000 forces against the combined 18,000 enemy troops and could not safely deploy its Uchiha clan against Shaoyu. 127 128

Shaoyu's forces broke Konoha's front, capturing major figures including Shimura Danzō, Jiraiya, and Sarutobi Shinnosuke. Konoha was compelled into negotiations under the threat of further war. 159 162 171

The settlement imposed immense compensation, including three billion ryō and extensive supplies. Shaoyu later returned to Konoha and led roughly 600 Uchiha to Kumogakure, while Fugaku and approximately 200 members chose to remain. 164 165 169

The war left Konoha with more than 3,700 dead, including 81 jōnin. Its loss of the Nine-Tails, Uchiha relocation, and obligation to pay annual reparations to Kumogakure destroyed public confidence in Hiruzen's administration. 281 287

Change of leadership

Sarutobi Hiruzen resigned after publicly accepting responsibility for Konoha's wartime failures. 287 289

Minato Namikaze defeated Danzō in the subsequent Hokage election, aided by Fugaku's declaration that the remaining Uchiha would support him. Minato was formally inaugurated as the Fourth Hokage. 288 289 290

Government and society

• Hokage — The village's highest office. Sarutobi Hiruzen served as Third Hokage until his resignation; Minato Namikaze succeeded him as Fourth Hokage. 287 289 290
