Background

The Uchiha were one of Konoha's founding clans, having fought beside the Senju during the village's creation. After Uchiha Madara's departure and Hashirama's death, the clan was increasingly isolated, confined to the Military Police Force, and treated with suspicion by Konoha's leadership and residents. By the Third Hokage's administration, talented Uchiha faced surveillance, coercion, or disappearance. 32 165 185

During the Second Shinobi World War, Danzō exploited Uchiha pride to send Uchiha Shaoyu and three other Uchiha jōnin against the One-Tail jinchūriki Bunpuku. The operation killed Shaoyu's three companions and left him severely injured; rumors then accused him of deliberately releasing Bunpuku as a Sunagakure mole. 1

Shaoyu's survival and subsequent awakening of the Mangekyō Sharingan became a turning point. After Root attempted to seize him, he and Elder Uchiha Setsuna organized a covert escape from Konoha, using clan resources and secret passages to reach Kumogakure. Shaoyu departed with eleven clansmen, including his younger brother Shisui. 4 7 11 12 166

The Third Raikage tested Shaoyu in battle before accepting the defectors. Although Shaoyu lost, his performance earned him the position of Kumogakure's second elder and a dedicated clan territory; he later became head of Kumogakure's Uchiha Clan. 34 36 45

Shaoyu's branch continued to grow. He persuaded Uchiha Hachidai and thirty-seven Konoha Uchiha survivors to abandon Konoha and relocate to Kumogakure. Years later, he returned to Konoha and offered the remaining clan members the same choice; roughly two-thirds chose to leave. More than six hundred Uchiha refugees were ultimately resettled in Kumogakure. 62 166 185
