Background / History

Yao Shi was a transmigrator whose previous life ended in an accident. Reborn as an infant on the Douluo Continent, he was left stranded on a river rock until an elderly farmer rescued and raised him. The farmer had no children; Yao Shi later renamed himself and gave the old man the surname Yao, treating him as his grandfather. 2

When Yao was paralyzed protecting him during a soul-beast attack, Yao Shi resolved to become a Soul Master and pay for his treatment. From age four to seven, he caught and sold grilled fish, prepared Yao's meals, and cared for him while saving the fee for a martial-soul awakening. 2

His awakening produced a tree branch martial soul and Innate Full Soul Power. Although the Awakening Master rejected him because of the martial soul's appearance, Yao Shi's martial soul formed its own first soul ring overnight. Its healing skill restored Yao's mobility and rejuvenated his aged body, allowing Yao Shi to pursue formal training. 1 3 4

At Bluestone Town Junior Soul Master Academy, Yao Shi used his healing to treat commoners cheaply and nobles at higher prices. His ability to cure injuries, illnesses, and even lost limbs earned him the title of the Medicine King; he refused nobles who attempted to recruit him. 5

Five years after awakening, Yao Shi recognized that his martial soul was not an ordinary Jianmu. Its life-giving and flesh-altering manifestations resembled the Aeon of Abundance, though its power remained constrained by the laws of the Douluo Plane. 6

Yao Shi is compassionate toward commoners and particularly sensitive to the inequality that prevents poor families from accessing Soul Master training or medical care. His childhood labor and Yao's paralysis shaped his desire to earn money independently, heal those in need, and eventually change a system that favors the wealthy. 2 4 5

Despite his healing-oriented powers, he is daring to the point of recklessness. He tested his immortality by accepting a direct strike from a four-thousand-year Armored Bear and repeatedly risks himself to protect others, including Snow Empress. 7 39 40

He is usually polite and humble with ordinary people, but can be manipulative when pursuing a goal. He leveraged Tang Ya's desperation to make her his disciple through Path Resonance, and he initially intended to use Ice Empress's strength for his own protection. 28 29 39

Yao Shi is also prone to boastfulness, especially concerning his future godhood and the powers connected to his martial soul. Ice Empress frequently finds these claims irritating, even when his abilities prove genuine. 32 35 41
