Characteristics

Soul Beasts are the principal source of soul rings for human Soul Masters. Traditionally, a Soul Beast must be killed before its soul ring can be absorbed; this creates an enduring conflict between humans and the Soul Beast Clan. 3 89

Their intelligence varies substantially. Low-level Soul Beasts may act on instinct alone, while powerful Soul Beasts such as Di Tian, Ice Empress, Snow Empress, Xiong Jun, and the King of Ten Thousand Monsters can speak, negotiate, command armies, and make long-term strategic decisions. 32 79 82 86

Some Soul Beasts can pursue human transformation or rebuilding. Snow Empress attempts to transform into a human during her sixth heavenly tribulation, while Yao Shi's self-generated rings repeatedly lead Soul Beasts to suspect that he is a rebuilding Soul Beast. 32 36 41

A Soul Beast's cultivation age is directly associated with its strength and the quality of soul ring it can provide.

• Soul Masters normally seek compatible Soul Beasts before acquiring a new ring. 3 8
• The rarity of high-year Soul Beasts makes their rings especially valuable; Skydream Iceworm becomes Huo Yuhao's unprecedented million-year first soul ring. 9

Immortal Bodies

After the Abundance Ambrosial Arbor takes root in the Star Dou Great Forest, Soul Beasts receive Immortal Bodies and rapidly recover from injuries. The blessing later spreads to Soul Beasts beyond the forest as well. 80 91

Story Role / Major Arcs

Soul Ring Hunting

Soul Beasts initially appear as the danger faced by young Soul Masters seeking soul rings. A ten-year Soul Beast injures Yao Shi's grandfather, while a Wind Baboon nearly kills Huo Yuhao during his first hunt. 2 7

Yao Shi later confronts a nearly 4,000-year Armored Bear despite being only a two-ring Soul Master. Rather than kill it, he uses Longevity Blessing on the beast, causing it to flee. 7

Alliance with the Ice Soul Beasts

Yao Shi traps Ice Empress within the Glazed Abundance Pure Land and offers to protect her from her 400,000-year tribulation. Ice Empress accepts the bargain and becomes his protector. 32

Yao Shi and Ice Empress subsequently intervene when Snow Empress is ambushed during her heavenly tribulation. Yao Shi's Creation and Evolution creates the Thunder Spirit, allowing Snow Empress to survive and reach 700,000 years of cultivation. 36 41 42

Abundance Ambrosial Arbor and the Star Dou War

Di Tian receives the Ambrosial Arbor as a divine gift of the Medicine King and asks for Immortal Bodies for the Soul Beast Clan. The tree's power strengthens the Soul Beasts of the Star Dou Great Forest and grants them resurrection abilities. 79 80

When an army of more than 300,000 human Soul Masters invades to seize the tree, the Soul Beasts launch a night raid and exploit their Immortal Bodies to inflict severe casualties. 83 84

The humans discover that Soul Beast blood can pass immortality to humans, sparking infighting among the invaders. Di Tian responds with Myriad Dragon Flame, and the war ends in an overwhelming Soul Beast victory. 87 88

Consequences for Soul Masters

The widespread immortality of Soul Beasts makes soul-ring hunting increasingly difficult. New Soul Masters may be unable to deliver the complete destruction needed to kill even low-year Soul Beasts, threatening the conventional path of Soul Master advancement. 89 91
