Background / History

Shrek Academy is widely regarded as the number one academy on Douluo Continent. It draws on the continent's foremost resources to cultivate gifted soul masters, many of whom later become academy teachers and continue recruiting new talent. Its reputation is reinforced by a long record of tournament success, having won nearly every Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Dueling Tournament championship for the past thousand years 6 22 62.

The academy occupies an enormous campus, around which Shrek City developed. Statues within the academy depict its three founders and the first generation of the Shrek Seven Monsters 11.

Yao Shi enrolled at age twelve with Rank 24 soul power after graduating early from Bluestone Town Junior Soul Master Academy. He later won the freshman assessment with Wang Dong and Xiao Xiao, but was denied full outer-court core disciple status despite defeating the Netherworld White Tiger in one strike. The academy instead offered him provisional core treatment until the end of the academic year; he withdrew during the holiday and transferred to the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy 6 27 51.

Following its disastrous tournament campaign, Mu En recognized that Shrek had fallen significantly behind the Sun Moon Empire in Soul Tool development. He ordered the Soul Guidance Department to pursue an exchange program with the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy and required the eventual integration of Martial Soul Department and Soul Guidance Department education, including mandatory Soul Tool instruction for Martial Soul Department students 76.

Admissions and Student Life

• Entry requires suitable age, sufficient soul power, and letters of recommendation. Yao Shi and Huo Yuhao entered using recommendations from city lords whose illnesses Yao Shi had treated 11.
• New students receive dormitory keys, uniforms, and freshman badges upon registration 11.
• Freshmen are housed in two-person dormitories with wooden beds 12 50.
• Students who fail the freshman assessment are expelled rather than transferred to another class 22.
• The freshman assessment involves nearly 300 three-person teams; only the top 150 may remain at the academy 22.

Training and Assessment

Freshman Training

Under Zhang Lexuan, Freshman Class One follows a schedule of daily running, martial soul cultivation, martial-soul-specific exercises, Friday sparring, and two weekly rest days 20.

Zhou Yi previously used an uncompromising disciplinary approach, ordering the class to run 100 laps around Shrek Square after a registration dispute and threatening immediate expulsion for noncompliance. Her punishment of Yao Shi and Wang Dong escalated to 300 laps—90 kilometers—after they challenged her methods 15 16.

Core Disciple Selection

Core disciples are selected through academy evaluation rather than only demonstrated combat strength. Yao Shi was excluded despite winning the freshman championship, as the academy judged his branch martial soul to have limited long-term potential 27.

For selection to the Shrek Seven Monsters reserve team, 25 Martial Soul Department core disciples and one Soul Guidance Department core disciple participated in a ruleless free-for-all. The last seven remaining were selected as reserves and tournament substitutes 54.

The reserve team trains under Xuan Zi once per week and is continuously assessed over five years. Their appointment is treated as an academy secret, with disclosure risking revocation of their status 54.

After the tournament, Mu En designated the seven as Shrek's next generation of Seven Monsters. Bei Bei, Xu Sanshi, and Jiang Nannan were permitted to undertake the inner academy assessment ahead of schedule, while Dai Huabin, Wang Dong, Zhu Lu, and Ning Tian were ordered to study under Mu En and Sea God Pavilion's elders on Sea God Island for two years before returning to the outer academy 76.

• Mu En / Elder Mu — Master of Sea God Pavilion and Shrek's strongest expert. Following the Divine Blood incident, he recovered his youth and peak condition, resuming a more active role in directing the academy's future 76 89.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Yao Shi's Enrollment and Departure

Yao Shi and Huo Yuhao arrive at Shrek Academy after travelling from the Star Luo Empire. Both register independently rather than accepting Tang Ya's offer to enter through the Tang Sect; at Yao Shi's advice, Huo Yuhao enrolls in the Soul Guidance Department 10 11.

Although Yao Shi's team wins the freshman assessment, the academy's core-disciple decision convinces him that Shrek has little to teach him beyond its denser soul power. He leaves at the end of the term without informing Wang Dong, later enrolling at the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy 22 27 51.

Reserve Team Crisis

The reserve Seven Monsters travel with the Shrek Inspection Corps toward Star Luo City. During an operation against bandits in the Mingdou Mountains, a Death God's Messenger uses corpse explosions to kill Yao Haoxuan, Chen Zifeng, Gongyang Mo, and Xixi; Wang Dong is abducted but recovered unharmed. Xuan Zi returns to the academy with the dead and injured while Wang Yan leads the remaining students onward to tournament registration 56 57.

Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Dueling Tournament

Because its official team is unavailable following the ambush, Shrek enters the tournament with only two official members—Ma Xiaotao and Ling Luochen—and its seven reserves. Spectators initially question the academy's apparent decline when the reserve team reveals only three Soul Ancestors, two Soul Elders, and two Soul Grand Masters 61 62.

The reserve team defeats Tianling Advanced Soul Master Academy in just over a minute through coordinated use of Ning Tian's enhancement, the Hell White Tiger martial soul fusion, and Wang Dong's aerial support 63.

Reinforcements fail to arrive after another evil soul master ambush kills four academy disciples. Shrek's remaining team struggles through the tournament until Ma Xiaotao loses control of her Evil Fire Phoenix martial soul during a match against Zhengtian Academy, killing three opponents and severely injuring another 66 69.

With Ma Xiaotao incapacitated and no reinforcements available, Wang Yan withdraws Shrek from all remaining matches. Star Luo Emperor Xu Jiawei later explains publicly that the academy had been forced to field its reserve team because of the pre-tournament ambush 70.

The team returns to Shrek in dejection after failing to reach the top thirty-six. Yan Shaozhe and Cai Mei'er do not punish Wang Yan or the students, while Mu En summons the reserve team to Sea God Pavilion and places their future development under special arrangements 75 76.

Soul Tool Reform

The tournament defeat and Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy's eventual championship demonstrate Shrek's growing disadvantage in Soul Tool technology. Mu En consequently warns that traditional martial-soul-focused training alone will leave the academy obsolete, comparing such stagnation to the Tang Sect's decline 70 76.

Mu En orders Shrek to seek an exchange program with the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy. He further mandates that, within five years, the Martial Soul Department and Soul Guidance Department begin integration and that Martial Soul Department students receive weekly Soul Engineer instruction sufficient to use ordinary Soul Tools 76.

Divine Tree Expedition

When the Abundance Ambrosial Arbor appears in the Star Dou Great Forest, Shrek Academy treats the divine tree as a continental threat and organizes a joint expedition with the three original nations and major sects. The academy supplies Sea God Pavilion elders, high-ranking teachers, returning inner court disciples, and forces whose combined strength may exceed that of the allied factions 80 81.

Xuan Zi leads Shrek's expeditionary force against the Soul Beasts. Following the conflict, Shrek personnel who returned with Soul Beast blood gained Immortal Bodies, while Mu En consumed Divine Blood and was restored from his crippled elderly state to his youthful peak 82 88 89.

Mu En later identifies the Soul Beasts' new Immortal Bodies as a long-term threat to ordinary soul masters' ability to obtain soul rings. While delaying another major mobilization because of recent casualties, he considers securing the Evil Demon Forest in the Sun Moon Empire as an alternative hunting ground 89 90.

Ma Xiaotao's Condition and Yao Shi Recruitment

After the tournament, Ma Xiaotao remains near Tianling City because the Abundance tree's vicinity noticeably eases her Evil Fire. Yan Shaozhe, Xuan Zi, and Zhuang Yusen travel there to investigate both her condition and the giant tree 119.

Zhuang Yusen determines that Ma Xiaotao's Evil Fire is evolving toward Ultimate Fire and can only be suppressed or removed by a stronger ice attribute—Ultimate Ice. Upon learning that Yao Shi possesses an Ultimate Ice martial soul and is nearby, Shrek's leaders decide to seek his aid while also attempting to return him to the academy 120.

Yan Shaozhe apologizes to Yao Shi for Shrek's earlier failure to recognize his talent and offers immediate Inner Court status, personal tutelage, cultivation resources, high-quality soul bones, a one-hundred-thousand-year soul bone, and a future one-hundred-thousand-year soul ring. Yao Shi refuses every offer, remaining loyal to his path at the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy; Xuan Zi subsequently proposes forcibly taking him back to resolve Ma Xiaotao's crisis 121.

Gu Yuena's Intended Infiltration

Following her recovery, the Silver Dragon King adopts human form as Gu Yuena and chooses Shrek Academy as the first place from which to study human society. She considers it the continent's foremost human academy and intends to infiltrate it while concealing her identity from all but God King-level beings 117.
