Background / History

Origins and the founding of Konoha

The Uchiha and Senju were the two foremost clans of the Warring States Period. The Uchiha inherited Yin power through Hagoromo, while the Senju inherited Yang power; uniting both powers could yield the Sage of Six Paths' power 83.

Under Uchiha Madara, the clan fought the Senju for control of land west of a river. Madara's younger brother Izuna was killed by Tobirama Senju, after which Madara transplanted Izuna's eyes and attained the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 83. The prolonged conflict ended when Madara and Senju Hashirama allied their clans, forbade further fighting between Uchiha and Senju members, and founded Konoha together 83.

A stone tablet kept in Uchiha territory can be read only by Uchiha descendants. Madara believed its incomplete text implied that the Sharingan could evolve beyond the Mangekyō into the Rinnegan; Sasuke's Rinnegan later confirmed that possibility to him 83.

Marginalization after the Nine-Tails attack

During the Nine-Tails' attack, Fugaku mobilized Uchiha officers but ordered them to protect noncombatants rather than attack the beast directly, believing an attack would worsen its rampage 2. Afterward, Konoha's leadership ordered the clan and Police Force to relocate to a remote district, while another clan received the Uchiha's former territory 3.

The relocation intensified existing resentment. Many clansmen believed they had been pushed to the village's edge since the Second Hokage's era and were being restricted due to rumors that the Uchiha had controlled the Nine-Tails 4. Fugaku called for patience, self-improvement, and the cultivation of a genius capable of restoring the clan's standing 4.

Sasuke's birth gave the clan such a figure: he was born with a two-tomoe Sharingan, an unprecedented event in Uchiha history. Fugaku regarded him as a prospective clan head and the hope of reviving the clan's former glory 1.

Shisui incident and the avoided massacre

Tensions escalated when rumors of an Uchiha rebellion spread through Konoha. Fugaku sought negotiations, while Shisui acted as an intermediary for both the Uchiha and Konoha, assuring the Hokage that the clan did not presently intend to rebel 6.

Danzo ambushed Shisui, stole one of his eyes, and poisoned him. Shisui attempted to surrender his remaining eye to Itachi and leap from a cliff, but Sasuke brought Fugaku to the Naka River in time for Fugaku to save him using Heavenly Standing 6 7. Fugaku then led twenty three-tomoe users, including Itachi, to demand Shisui's eyes from Konoha's leadership 8.

The confrontation nearly became open conflict when Fugaku manifested a half-body Susanoo and threatened rebellion. Hyuga intervention ultimately pressured Danzo to return Shisui's stolen eye 8 9.

Danzo later attempted to arrange the clan's extermination through Itachi and the masked Obito. Sasuke used Shisui's Kotoamatsukami to compel Obito to stop actions harmful to the Uchiha, preventing the massacre; Obito subsequently killed Danzo 16 17 20.

Restoration of influence

After Danzo's death, Fugaku, Itachi, Sasuke, and thirteen elite clansmen confronted Konoha's leadership. Sasuke demanded the return of Uchiha lands, restoration of the Police Force's security duties, and authorization for an Uchiha intelligence organization 20.

The clan later reached a peace agreement with Konoha's upper ranks, according to Izumi, who stated that the elders had become more restrained and the clan had obtained what it sought 32. Its influence nevertheless remained a concern for other factions: Nara Shikaku planned to weaken Uchiha authority and later established the Advanced Ninja Academy as a counterweight to the clan's power 52 88.

Fugaku was nominated for Fifth Hokage with Hyuga support, but the council rejected him because of the Uchiha's history of producing rogue ninja 63. He later refused to commit the clan to a war with Amegakure solely for Konoha's benefit, asserting the clan's independence from village policy 88.

Culture and Political Outlook

• The clan places exceptional status on Sharingan advancement. Fugaku praised Itachi's Mangekyō awakening despite the deaths of Itachi's comrades, an attitude that contributed to Itachi's disillusionment with his father and clan 5.
