Nature and Host Bond

Guardian Spirits choose and protect hosts with whom they are Compatible; Tokichiro states that they seek people with special destinies rather than ordinary individuals. Their protection is regarded in Shinto animistic terms as the favor of a deity. 23 24

They possess a dual nature. A Guardian Spirit can lean toward an Aragami-like destructive aspect or a divine Wa-Spirit aspect, though most remain balanced unless external influences or their host drive them strongly in one direction. 66

A host serves as a Guardian Spirit's vessel. The spirit may move around its host within a limited range, be recalled into the vessel, or manifest outwardly; such manifestations are projections rather than its complete existence. 43 66

System Mechanics

In Gu Mo's System, a Guardian Spirit occupies a dedicated slot above the host's normal skill slots and has its own interface for leveling, equipment, skills, and appearance. 26

• Guardian Spirits can possess their own level, attributes, equipment, and skill slots. 26 85
• Yokai Soul Cores can be equipped as a Guardian Spirit's Skill Badges; the host can then indirectly use the Yokai Skills granted by those cores. 27
• Ordinary System Skill Badges cannot be equipped by Guardian Spirits, while Yokai Soul Cores cannot be placed in the host's normal skill slots. 27
• A Guardian Spirit's power must be channeled through its host to affect the material world, imposing an energy cost on the host. 43 69

Abilities and Applications

Divine Protection

Guardian Spirits provide their hosts with permanent blessings and special abilities. The nature of these blessings differs greatly between spirits. 27 260

• Effects documented among Guardian Spirits include life sensing, essence detection, healing, luck manipulation, immortality, eternal youth, precognition, resurrection, and time travel. 43 452
• The Nine-Tails' Divine Protection grants Fire Resistance +20, Luck +70, and Fire Damage +15% to Gu Mo. 27
• The Nine-Tails' luck bonus visibly improves Gu Mo's item drops during the ascent to Saito Dosan's manor. 39
• Passive protection may be subtle in daily life, but can resist hostile Yokai Energy and mitigate environmental suppression. 39 42

Manifestation and Possession

A Guardian Spirit can be actively summoned or allowed to possess its host, enabling the host to borrow its power directly. 27

• The Nine-Tails' Possession Summon consumes energy continuously and cannot be activated when the host's energy is below the required threshold. 27
• Possession Fusion greatly enhances physical capability and can approach Yokai Transformation at high synchronization. 46 69
• During a controlled Nine-Tails fusion, Gu Mo estimates his Strength, Agility, and Constitution temporarily rise above 15. 69
• Borrowed power does not replace its own cost: using Guardian Spirit power rapidly drains the host's stamina and spirit. 69 71
• A full Yokai Transformation ends if the host can no longer sustain the fusion; Guardian Spirits themselves are not inherently demonic possessions. 132

Living Weapon

Through Living Weapon Mastery, a Guardian Spirit's power can be housed in a weapon instead of fused directly with the host. 46 49

• The selected weapon gains greatly increased attack power, attack range, and durability. 49
• Activation requires 10 energy points and drains 1 energy point per second. 49
• The weapon's strength depends on how much of the Guardian Spirit's power the host can control. 46
• Simply housing a Guardian Spirit in a weapon without activating its power consumes little energy and can be used to conceal the spirit's presence. 66
