Background / History

Fifty years after serving as guardian of the Shikon Jewel, Kikyo was brought back into the human world by Urasue, who formed her body from spiritual bones and grave soil and drew in the soul of Kikyo’s reincarnation, Kagome Higurashi. During the ensuing conflict, Kagome reclaimed that soul; Kikyo survived and fell from a cliff into a mist-covered valley, later settling in a village during the Sengoku period. 105

In the village, Kikyo continued her work as a Miko. She healed the sick, exorcised Yokai, and accepted offerings from villagers when refusing them would leave them uneasy. Her protection made the village unusually secure despite frequent Yokai attacks in the region. 105 108

Kikyo secretly left the village at night to collect souls carried by Soul Collectors. Saya, a young girl whom Kikyo had protected, witnessed this and became afraid of her. After the monk Seikai attempted to exorcise Kikyo, Gu Mo intervened; soon afterward, Kikyo chose to leave the village with Gu Mo to investigate Shikon Jewel Shards. 113 114

After travelling into the modern era, Kikyo struggled with the changes brought by five centuries of time. She was unsettled by public attention, confused about her place in an era where most people connected to her former life were gone, and uncertain of what purpose remained for her. 123 125 126

Appearance

Kikyo is a striking black-haired Miko with clear eyes and a composed presence. Her beauty and traditional clothing draw immediate attention in modern Tokyo, where she is repeatedly mistaken for Kagome. 123 126

  • Long, silk-like black hair. 123 169
  • Clear, calm eyes often described as resembling autumn water. 105
  • Traditional white Miko robes and scarlet hakama. 113 123
  • White tabi and zori sandals. 123
  • Her outward appearance remained unchanged after becoming a Celestial Maiden. 169

Personality

Kikyo is calm, restrained, and difficult to unsettle. Even when confronting unknown Yokai, Shikon Jewel users, or Gu Mo’s inexplicable knowledge, she observes carefully before reaching conclusions. She initially treats Gu Mo as a possible danger because of his Yokai aura and his use of a Shikon Jewel Shard, but she does not act rashly against him. 105 107 121

She possesses a strong sense of duty toward protecting people from Yokai. Her compassion is most visible in her healing, purification of the Human-faced Fruit Tree and its victims, and willingness to confront Kaguya despite the danger. 108 117 128

Kikyo does not seek power for its own sake. She refuses to rely on the Celestial Maiden’s Robe after Kaguya’s defeat, believing personal strength matters more than external tools. 143

Abilities & Skills

Spiritual Power and Purification

Kikyo wields exceptionally powerful Spiritual Power, especially effective against Yokai and corrupt spiritual influences.

  • Fires Purification Arrows capable of destroying groups of lesser Yokai and forcing powerful enemies such as Kaguya to evade. 128 140 148
  • Can unleash bursts of Spiritual Power strong enough to send giant monsters flying despite her seemingly frail physique. 109
  • Purified the Human-faced Fruit Tree and the people it had devoured. 117
  • Easily purified Kaguya’s disembodied soul when it attempted to possess her. 143
  • Her Spiritual Power can injure even Sesshomaru, whose Tenseiga deflected one of her arrows. 136

Miko Arts

Kikyo is proficient with the standard techniques of a Miko and uses them fluidly in combat.

  • Creates defensive barriers to shield allies and deflect falling debris. 139 140
  • Uses Talismans to purify dangerous energy that cannot be touched directly. 140
  • Commands Shikigami Paper Dolls, including two child-shaped guardians that provide vigilance and protection. 140

  • Detects nearby shards through her own senses rather than by following leaked energy. 114
  • Can identify a shard’s exact location if it is within range. 114
  • This ability is linked to her history of reincarnation and rebirth alongside the Shikon Jewel. 114

  • Identified spiritually infused obsidian as high-quality material for Golem construction. 160
  • Mastered the crafting process more quickly than Gu Mo. 160
  • Intended to use Shikigami to assist in rebuilding Horai Island before Gu Mo proposed using Golems instead. 156

Celestial Maiden Physiology

After consuming the Elixir of Immortality, Kikyo gained a true Celestial Maiden body.

  • Became ageless and undying rather than remaining a body formed from clay, bones, and grave soil. 169
  • Her physical strength increased beyond what she could previously achieve through Spiritual Power reinforcement alone. 169
  • Her agility, reactions, and spiritual capacity were also enhanced. 169
